Convection–Diffusion Model for the Prediction of Anthropogenically-Initiated Wildfire Ignition

A spatial interaction model to predict anthropogenically-initiated accidental and incendiary wildfire ignition probability is developed using fluid flow analogies for human movement patterns. Urban areas with large populations are identified as the sites of global influencing factors, and are modeled as the gravity term. The transportation corridors are identified as local influencing factors, and are modeled using fluid flow analogy as diffusion and convection terms. The model is implemented in ArcGIS, and applied for the prediction of wildfire hazard distribution in southeastern Mississippi. The model shows87 % correlation with historic data in the winter season,whereas the previously developed gravity model shows only 75 % correlation. The normalized error for convection–diffusion model predictions is about 5 % in the winter season, whereas the gravity model shows an error of 7 %.The proposed model is robust as it couples a multi-criteria behavioral pattern within a single dynamic equation to enhance predictive capability. At the same time, the proposed model is more costly than the gravity model as it requires evaluation of distance from intermodal transportation corridors, transportation corridor density, and traffic volume maps. Nonetheless, the model is developed in a modular fashion, such that either global or local terms can be neglected if required.

The kinetics of ozonation reactions of trichloroethylene (TCE) and benzene in gas and liquid phases at 101.3 kPa and 298 K was investigated in this paper. The ozonation of TCE is first order with respect to the ozone concentration and one and half order to TCE in the gas phase with the average rate constant 57.30 (mol·L-1)-1.5·s-1, and the TCE ozonation in aqueous medium is first order with respect to both ozone and trichloroethylene with the average rate constant 6.30 (mol·L-1)-1·-1. The ozonation of benzene in the gas phase is first order in ozone but independent of the benzene concentration with the average reaction rate constant 0.0011s-1. The overall kinetics of reaction between ozone and benzene in aqueous solution is found to be first order with one-half order in both ozone and bezene, with the average reaction rate constant 2.67s-1. It is found that the ozonation rate of pallutants is much quicker than that of self-decomposition of ozone in both gas and aqueous phase.

Alum （KAl（SOa）E.12H2O） is an inexpensive, efficient, non-toxic and mild catalyst for the one-pot synthesis of α-aminopho- sphonates. A three component reaction of an aldehyde/ketone, an amine and triethyl phosphite was carried out under solvent-free conditions to afford the corresponding α-aminophosphonates in short reaction times and high yields with the green aspects by avoiding toxic catalysts and solvents. 2009 Murlidhar S. Carbothermal reduction using biochar(BC)is a green and effective method of synthesizing BCsupported nanoscale zero-valent iron(nanoFe^(0))***,the effect of BC surface area on the structure,distribution,and performance such as the heavy metal uptake capacity of nanoFe^(0)particles remains *** stover-based BCs with different surface areas(1.7−1472 m^(2)/g)were prepared in this *** have been used for in-situ synthesis BCs-supported nanoFe^(0)particlesthrough carbothermal reduction of ferrous *** BCs-supported nanoFe^(0)particles were found to be covered with graphene shells and dispersed onto BC surfaces,forming the BC-supported graphene-encapsulated nanoFe^(0)(BC-G@Fe^(0))*** graphene shells covering the nanoFe^(0)particles were formed because of gaseous carbon evolved from biomass carbonization reacting with iron oxides/iron *** BC surface area decreased the average diameters of nanoFe^(0)particles,indicating a higher BC surface area alleviated the aggregation of nanoFe^(0)particles,which resulted in higher heavy metal uptake *** the optimized condition,BC-G@Fe^(0)composite exhibited uptake capacities of 124.4,121.8,254.5,and 48.0 mg/g for Cu^(2+),Pb^(2+),Ag^(+),and As^(3+),respectively(pH 5,25℃).Moreover,the BC-G@Fe^(0)composite also demonstrated high stability for Cu^(2+)removal from the fixed-bed continuous flow,in which 1 g of BC-G@Fe^(0)can work for 120 h in a 4 mg/L Cu^(2+)flow continually and clean 28.6 L Cu^(2+)contaminated ***,the BC-G@Fe^(0)composite can effectively immobilize the bioavailable As^(3+)from the contaminated soil,i.e.,5%(w)of BC-G@Fe^(0)composite addition can immobilize up to 92.2%bioavailable As^(3+)from the contaminated soil.

The differentiation of and myelination by oligodendrocytes （OLs） are exquisitely regulated by a series of intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms. As each OL can make differing numbers of myelin segments with variable lengths along similar axon tracts, myelination can be viewed as a graded process shaped by inhibitory/ inductive cues during development. Myelination by OLs is a prime example of an adaptive process determined by the microenvironment and architecture of the central nervous system （CNS）. In this review, we discuss how myelin formation by OLs may be controlled by the heterogeneous microenvironment of the CNS. Then we address recent findings demonstrating that neighboring OLs may compete for available axon space, and highlight our current understanding of myelin-based inhibitors of axonal regeneration that are potentially responsible for the reciprocal dialogue between OLs and determine the numbers and lengths of myelin internodes. Understanding the mechanisms that control the spatiotemporal regulation of myelinogenic potential during development may provide valuable insight into therapeutic strategies for promoting remyelination in an inhibitory microenvironment.

A simple one-pot synthetic method for the preparation of 2,4,5-triaryl-lH-imidazoles from benzoin or benzil, ammonium acetate, aromatic aldehydes, and ZrOCl2-8H2O catalyst is described. The ZrOCl2-8H2O catalyst was found to be equally effective for aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes and also for the preparation of substituted 1,4-di（4,5-diphenylimidazol-yl） benzene.

Diversity considerations in wideband radar detection of migrating targets in clutter

Wideband radars have been proposed for detection of moving targets, with unique capability of non-ambiguous detection due to range migration. Moreover, frequency diversity has long been used for mitigating the fading effects caused by target and clutter fluctuations. The real benefits of wideband radars are difficult to analyze, since they derive from the combined effects of target resolution in range, migration over successive cells of clutter, Doppler resolution and instantaneous bandwidth, and residual ambiguities in Doppler. In order to contribute to a better understanding of the benefits of agile transmissions for detection of moving targets, clutter cancelling performances of wideband radars are examined, demonstrating clear benefits from diversity on clutter and target, primarily – but not only – obtained through target migration effects. Special attention is given to long-range surveillance and tracking, and new results on detection of moving targets in clutter will be provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of these new architectures for small targets detection at long range, in difficult environments. Finally, recommendations for system designs that improve the discrimination of moving targets against fixed and diffuse clutter are presented.

Accurate information on eye position in the orbit is available from visual feedback,efference copy of the oculomotor commands and proprioceptive signals from the extraocular muscles (EOM).Whereas visual feedback and oculomotor commands have been extensively studied,central processing of EOM proprioceptive signals remains to be elucidated.A challenge to the field is to develop an approach to induce passive eye movements without physically contacting the eyes.A novel method was developed to generate passive eye movements in rats.A small rare-earth magnet disk (0.7 mm diameter,0.5 mm thickness) was attached to the surface of a rat's eyeball.A metal rod (5 mm diameter) wrapped with an electromagnetic (EM) coil was placed near the magnet (8-15 mm).By passing currents to the EM coil,electromagnetic force (EMF) was generated and acted upon the magnet and induced passive eye *** EMF induced well-defined passive eye movements,whose directions were dependent on current polarity and amplitudes and peak velocities were dependent on current intensity and *** velocities of the EMF-induced eye movements were linearly related to amplitudes,exhibiting main sequence relationships similar to that of saccades in awake rats and eye movements induced by electrical microstimulation of the abducens nucleus in anesthetized *** examination showed that repetitive EMF stimulations did not appear to result in damages in the EOM *** results validated the EMF approach as a novel tool to investigate EOM proprioceptive signals and their roles in visual localization and gaze control.
