We investigated the culm form for one of the largest bamboo species, Phyllostachys pubescens Mazel ex Houz. in relation to the me- chanical constraint principles, i.e., elastic, stress and geometric similarity. The fine-resolution analysis of the culm taper indicated that the culm for P. pubescens consisted of three or four segments with various forms, except for the butt swell. This implied that the taper of the whole culm for P. pubescens could be expressed by neither of these principles. The regression slope between culm height and diameter at breast height on the double logarithmic coordinates was 0.629, which was significantly different from the values predicted from these principles. In conclusion, none of these mechanical constraint principles can express the culm taper and height-diameter relationship, and there may be a need for a more complicated model to express the culm form for P. pubescens.

A numerical simulation is performed to find out a key vortical structure in the laminar-turbulent transition. A low-speed streak is generated inside a laminar boundary layer using an isolated cuboid roughness, aimed at providing an environment unstable to outer disturbances. Then, a short duration jet is issued into the boundary layer. When the jet velocity is low, some vortices appear in the boundary layer, but the transition of the boundary layer does not take ***, when the jet velocity exceeds a certain threshold, two vortices newly appear above the elongated legs of a V-shaped vortex and only one of them is stretched and survives. After that,vortices are generated one after another around the survived one. By comparing the decayed and the survived vortices, it is found that the difference in their heights is the key characteristic which leads to the transition.

Background: To explore the effects of cholestasis on whole blood concentration of tacrolimus (TAC), an immunosup-pressant, we investigated the relationship among blood TAC concentration, bile flow, and TAC metabolites in bile, as well as the relationship between total bilirubin (T-Bil), an index of cholestasis, and blood TAC concentration, in liver transplant recipients. Methods: Data were collected retrospectively from 16 male and 19 female patients (mean age: 38 years;range: 12 -59 years) who had undergone a living-related liver transplantation at kyoto prefectural university of Medicine from 2004 through 2008. Analysis of TAC, demethyl-TAC, and hydroxy-TAC in bile was performed by LC-MS/MS. Results: There was no correlation between the ratio of TAC metabolite to TAC in bile (M/P) of demethyl-TAC and post operation days (POD), whereas a weak linear correlation was demonstrated between M/P of hydroxy-TAC and POD (r = -0.345). Moreover, linear correlations were not observed between M/P and the TAC trough level normalized dose (TLTAC/dose), and between TLTAC/dose and POD. A negative linear correlation was demonstrated between bile flow and T-Bil in blood (r = -0.495). Furthermore, a positive linear correlation was observed between TLTAC/dose and T-Bil (r = 0.598), whereas there was no correlation between bile flow and TLTAC/dose. Conclusions: Improvement of hepatic function and the increase of TAC clearance after postoperative day 7 did not significantly contribute to hepatic TAC metabolism, bile excretion, and TLTAC/dose. Postoperative biliary stricture from liver transplantation with/without biliary drainage caused inter-and intra-patient variability in TLTAC/dose after liver transplantation, which could be assessed by T-Bil. T-Bil in blood might be a predictive biomarker for determining the degree of bile duct stricture and TAC dose in liver transplantation patients. Airborne bacteria were measured when a dust storm passed Beijing in spring 2012 with a focus on cell concentration, viability and TSA- and R2A-cultured strain composition. The concentration varied at an order of 10^7 cells/m3 with dust loading （demonstrated with PM10） and they had a very close correlation （RT2 = 0.91, p 〈 0.01）. At the time of highest PM10 of 652 μg/m3, the bacterial concentration reached 1.4 × 10^8 cells/m3, which was larger than that before and after the dust event by one order. Bacterial viability, the ratio of number concentration of viable cells to total cells, was 32%-64% and smaller in the dust plume than that before the dust arrival. Bacterial strains from the culture ranged between 2.5 × 10^4 and 4.6 × 10^5 CFU/m3 and no correlation with PM10 was determined. Their composition was different before and after the dust arrival according to 16S rRNA gene sequences and strains belong to Actinomycetes and Firmicutes were the majority in the dust samples.

AIM The single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) c.415C>T in exon 3 of NUDT15 affects thiopurine-induced leukopenia in Asian patients with Crohn's disease. Meanwhile, three additional genetic variants of NUDT15 were reported in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. We evaluated the effects of these additional genetic variants of NUDT15 in patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) treated with *** Ninety-six Japanese patients with IBD were enrolled. Genotyping for the NUDT15 and TPMT genes was performed using Custom Taq Man SNP genotyping assays or Sanger sequencing. The changes in white blood cell(WBC) count, mean corpuscular volume(MCV), platelet count, hemoglobin, CRP, amylase, albumin, AST, ALT, and ESR were *** Genetic variants of exon 1 and exon 3 of NUDT15 were identified in 24 of 96 patients(25.0%). C.52G > A and c.36_37 insG GAGTC in exon 1 were found in three patients each. All three patients with c.36_37 insG GAGTC in exon 1 were heterozygotes of ***139 Cys in exon 3. Eighteen patients had ***139 Cys in exon 3 alone. The WBC count gradually decreased after initiation of thiopurine treatment in the mutated cases(n = 24), and was significantly lower at 6, 8, 10, and 16 wk(P = 0.0271, 0.0037, 0.0051, and 0.0185, respectively). The WBC counts were also evaluated in patients with and without prednisolone treatment. In the patients with prednisolone treatment, the WBC count tended to show a greater decrease in the mutated cases, with significant differences at 8 and 10 wk(P = 0.012 and 0.029, respectively). In the patients without prednisolone treatment, the WBC count was significantly lower at 2, 4, 8, and 14 wk in mutated cases(P = 0.0196, 0.0182, 0.0237 and 0.0241, respectively). MCV increased after starting thiopurine treatment in the mutated cases, and was significantly higher at 10 wk(P = 0.0085). This paper aims to analyze the synchronization phenomena in the system consisting of n identical metronomes on a hanging plate by using the describing function（DF） method, which deals with the driving torque as a discontinuous function of the angle and angular velocity of each metronome. Different from a previous study on the synchronization of the system with the first harmonic of the angle of each metronome having the same amplitude, this paper analyzes the synchronization without any assumption on the amplitudes of n metronomes. By investigating the relation between the motion of the hanging plate（common base） and n metronomes, this paper characterizes the synchronization phenomena by the following two types of synchronization:One is the inherent synchronization, whose frequency and amplitude of all synchronized metronomes are the same as those of a single metronome on a fixed base. The other is the non-inherent synchronization, which includes the in-phase synchronization with the same amplitude, and the synchronization with different amplitudes. The analytical results are validated by numerical simulation for three metronomes about the synchronization with the same or different amplitudes.

Background: Self-efficacy has been widely studied in suicide, both in its causality and treatment effects. However, the evidence of causality is still ambiguous and there is a lack of generalizability. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between self-efficacy and suicidal ideation through a population cohort study. Methods: The community-based household survey using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted in a rural area of Japan, Happo Town, in Akita Prefecture with community residents aged 30 and over at two respective time points by local health volunteers. The baseline survey was conducted in 2010 with a response rate of 88.9% (n = 6044). Among them, 3812 residents met the inclusion criteria for the follow-up survey in 2012 where the response rate was 75.3% (n = 2869). Exposure variables to suicidal ideation included demographic details, depression and self-efficacy. The Institutional Review Board and the Ethics Committee of Akita university approved the study protocol and all subjects signed informed consent. Results: A total number of 2105 participants (76.4%) without suicidal ideation in the baseline study were enrolled into the follow-up study, and 8.2% of them had developed suicidal ideation. These participants with suicidal ideation were significantly less likely to be married/cohabitant;they had worse subjective health, poorer self-perceived economic status, stronger depressive mood, and lower self-efficacy scores. The odds ratio of the self-efficacy scores at follow-up survey for participants who had developed suicidal ideation were about 2 times lower than at baseline (95% confidence interval = 1. 53 - 3.06). After adjusting for all confounding factors, the association was still significant (OR = 1.66, 95% CI = 1.15 - 2.42). Conclusion: This result suggests that suicidal ideation may be prevented by increasing self-efficacy.
