Characterization of Bacterial Communities in Aerosols over Northern Chinese Marginal Seas and the Northwestern Pacific Ocean in Autumn

The characteristics of the bacterial community structure in aerosols of different particle sizes over northern Chinese marginal seas and the northwestern Pacific Ocean in autumn were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing and the quantitative real-time PCR method based on 16S rRNA *** with environmental factors and air mass sources,the bacterial abundance,community diversity,composition and structural characteristics in aerosols were studied,which might provide a scientific evaluation for a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics,long-distance transmission and ecological effects of aerosols from coastal waters to the distant ocean(northwestern Pacific Ocean).At the junction of the South Yellow Sea and the East China Sea,the bacterial abundance in the aerosols was substantially affected by transmission of continental air masses and was higher than those in other samples,and the bacterial abundance in coarse particle(>2.1μm)samples was significantly higher than that in fine particle(0.05).Among the environmental factors examined,a significant negative correlation was observed between bacterial community richness and temperature(P<0.05),and the bacterial community diversity was significantly positively correlated with the concentration of K^(+)(P<0.05).Canonical correspondence analysis showed that temperature,NH_(4)^(+) concentration and SO_(4)^(2−) concentration exerted significant effects on bacterial community struc

Grain size characteristics of the carbonate-free fraction of surface sediments from the Southwest Indian Ridge area and its geological significance

The carbonate-free fraction of 20 surface sediments collected from the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge(SWIR) was studied by grain size analysis and mineralogical analysis with X-ray powder diffraction(XRD),stereo microscopy and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The characteristics of the carbonate-free fraction of the sediments were obtained, and related influential factors were discussed. The results show that the mean grain size of this fraction is in 1.96Φ–8.19Φ, with poorly sorting and unimodal, bimodal or irregular bimodal distribution patterns. Four grain size end members of the fraction are derived with the End Member Model method. The finest end member EM1 shows a significant contribution of terrigenous materials of the aeolian input and sediment carried by the bottom current. End member EM2 with medium size mainly reflects sediment of a siliceous bioclast origin. EM3 and EM4 are interpreted as representing the coarser volcanic materials related to bedrock weathering or volcanic activities. Multi-provenance is the dominant factor controlling the grain size pattern of the carbonate-free fraction of the sediments in that area. In addition, sediment transport processes such as the bottom current and wind are the minor factors that influence the grain size distribution of the carbonate-free fraction sediments.

Experimental study on the oxidation kinetics of coal in typical coal mining areas of the Southern Junggar coalfield,Xinjiang,China

Coal spontaneous combustion(CSC)is a disaster associated with coal mining that leads to loss of coal resources and envi-ronmental and human health *** investigate kinetic characteristics for oxidation of coal,three coal samples were collected from different coal mining areas in the Southern Junggar ***,the collected coal samples were ground into different particle sizes and tested using microscopic and macroscopic methods,including thermal gravimetric analysis,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction,and temperature-programmed *** results obtained are as follows:the sharpest absorption peak(002)indicates that graphitization is ***,the results show that the SKS coal sample is prone to spontaneous combustion;the greater the aromatic hydrocarbon content is,the more difficult it is for CSC to occur,while the opposite is true for oxygen-containing functional *** SKS data confirmed this conclusion;the rate for generation of CO and CO_(2)controlled the possibility of SKS oxidation at 110℃and provided an indication of the *** the dehydration stage,the WD sample had the lowest activation energy,indicating that it was most susceptible to spontaneous *** the combustion stage,the lowest activation energy was found for the SKS sample with particle sizes<0.075 mm,indicating that particle size was one of the factors affecting spontane-ous *** activation energy for dehydration was significantly lower than that for combustion,which showed that the coal oxygen reaction was more likely to occur in the dehydration *** on DSC curves,the SKS sample had the largest exothermicity,indicating that it would ignite more readily.

Characteristics of zooplankton community in North Yellow Sea unveiled an indicator species for the Yellow Sea Warm Current in winter: Euchaeta plana

Zooplankton distributions are largely influenced by both biotic and abiotic factors in the surrounding *** zooplankton species can be used as bio-indicators for particular currents and water masses to help discover the dynamics of water current in the *** this study,we investigated the distribution of zooplankton in North Yellow Sea(NYS)during winter when the Yellow Sea Warm Current(YSWC)influenced that *** communities in the NYS were dominated by temperate and warm-temperate species,such as Calanus sinicus,Paracalanus parvus,Acartia bifilosa,and Sagitta *** warm-water species,Eucheata plana and Sagitta enflata were also *** analysis grouped NYS zooplankton into three communities,the Shandong Coastal Community(SCC)in the Shandong neritic area,the Yellow Sea Central Community(YSCC)in the central waters of the NYS,and the Liaoning Coastal Community(LCC)in the Liaoning neritic *** varied significantly among these communities,with an average of 102.2 ind./m^3 in SCC,179.8 ind./m^3 in YSCC,and 1244.2 ind./m^3 in *** and the bottom(3 m from the sea floor)temperature were likely the primary abiotic factors influencing zooplankton *** appearance of ***,an indicator species for the YSWC path,indicated a significant northwestward trend for the YSWC in 2007.

Effect of particle composition and consolidation degree on the wave-induced liquefaction of soil beds

The wave-induced liquefaction of seabed is responsible for causing damage to marine *** composition and consolidation degree are the key factors affecting the pore water pressure response and liquefaction behavior of the seabed under wave *** present study conducted wave flume experiments on silt and silty fine sand beds with varying particle ***,a comprehensive analysis of the differences and underlying reasons for liquefaction behavior in two different types of soil was conducted from both macroscopic and microscopic *** experimental results indicate that the silt bed necessitates a lower wave load intensity to attain the liquefaction state in comparison to the silty fine sand ***,the duration and development depth of liquefaction are greater in the silt *** dissimilarity in liquefaction behavior between the two types of soil can be attributed to the variation in their permeability and plastic deformation *** permeability coefficient and compression modulus of silt are lower than those of silty fine ***,silt is more prone to the accumulation of pore pressure and subsequent liquefaction under external *** research has demonstrated that silt beds with varying consolidation degrees exhibit distinct initial failure ***,a dense bed undergoes shear failure,whereas a loose bed experiences initial liquefaction *** study utilized discrete element simulation to examine the microscopic mechanisms that underlie this phenomenon.

Three-dimensional fluorescence characteristics of dissolved organic matter produced by Prorocentrum donghaiense Lu

Filtration and cross-flow ultrafiltration techniques were used to separate culture media of Prorocentrurn donghaiense at the exponential growth, stationary and decline stages into 〈0.45 μm filtrate, 100 kDa-0.45 μm, 1%100 kDa and 1-10 kDa retentate and 〈1 kDa ultrafiltrate fractions. The fluorescence properties of different molecular weights of dissolved organic matter （DOM） were measured by excitation-emission matrix spectra. Protein-like and humic-like fluorophores were observed in the DOM produced by P. donghaiense. The central positions of protein-like fluorophores showed a red shift with prolonged growth duration, shifting from tyrosine-like properties at the exponential growth stage to tryptophan-like properties at the stationary and decline stages. The excitation wavelengths of protein-like fluorophores exhibited some change in the exponential growth and stationary stages with increased molecular size, but showed little change in the decline stage. However, the emission wavelengths in the decline stage exhibited a blue shift. Very distinct C type and A type peaks in humic-like fluorophores were observed. With a prolonged culture time, the intensities of both of the peaks became strong and the excitation wavelengths of peak A showed a red shift, while the A：C ratios fell. More than 94% of fluorescent DOM was in the lower than 1 kDa molecular weight fraction.

Removal of nitric oxide from simulated flue gas via denitrification in a hollow-fiber membrane bioreactor

A hollow-fiber membrane bioreactor （HMBR） was studied for its ability to treat nitric oxide （NO） from simulated flue gas. The HMBR was operated for 9 months and showed a maximum elimination capacity of 702 mg NO/（***） with a removal efficiency of 86% （gas residence time of 30 sec, inlet NO concentration of 2680 mg/m^3, pH 8）. Varying operation parameters were tested to determine the stability and response of the HMBR. Both the inlet NO concentration and gas residence time influenced the removal of NO in the HMBR. NO elimination capacity increased with an increase in inlet NO concentration or a shortening of gas residence time. Higher removal efficiency of NO was obtained at a longer gas residence time or a lower inlet NO concentration. Microbial communities of the HMBR were sensitive to the variation in pH value and alkalescence corresponding to an optimum pH value of 8. In addition, NO elimination capacity and removal efficiency were inversely proportional to the inlet oxygen concentration. Sulfur dioxide had no great influence on elimination capacity and removal efficiency of NO. Product analysis was performed to study N20 and N2 production and confirmed that the majority of the microorganisms were denitrifying bacteria in the HMBR. Compared to other bioreactors treating NO, this study showed that the denitrifying HMBR was a good option for the removal of NO.

Occurrence of Different Forms and Implications of Compound Specific Sterols in Continental Sediments of the Northeast South China Sea

The South China Sea(SCS) is one of the most productive and accumulative marginal shelves of organic carbon in the world. To expound the transformation and preservation of organic carbon in the Northeast SCS, where abundant oil and gas resources have been reported, compound specific sterols in free(FR), base hydrolytic(BH), and acid hydrolytic(AH) forms were analyzed in surface and columnar sediments in May, 2016. The results showed that the total contents of sterols detected ranged from 0.15 to 3.74 ppm dry weight in the surface sediments, and gradually decreased from 3.41 to0.17 ppm dry weight from surface to deep sediments, in which cholesterol(27^(△5)) was the most abundant component. Sterols mainly existed in the BH form(54.51%-74.20%), followed by the FR form(25.50%-45.49%) and then the AH form(0-3.77%) in turn, in the surface sediments. BH and FR sterols accounted for 0-49.08% and 50.92%-100% in the columnar sediments, while AH sterols were undetectable. The contents of specific sterols indicated that, the primary source of marine organic carbon was about 5 times as much as that from terrestrial input. More and more FR sterols transformed into BH sterols with increasing sedimentary depth, and BH sterols absolutely dominated in sediment depths under 25 cm. The forms of Sterols C27 were maintained at a relative consistence state, but Sterols C28 to C30 degraded gradually during the sedimentation process. It was suggested that the stability of sterols, based on the chemical structures, might be the primary factor controlling their degradation and preservation in deeper sediments. These results would help to understand the organic carbon(OC) transformation in a hydrate formation area in a marginal sea.

Performance Evaluation and Microbial Shift of Sequencing Batch Biofilm Reactor Treating Synthetic Mariculture Wastewater Under Different Dissolved Oxygen at Aerobic Phase

The impact of dissolved oxygen(DO)at aerobic phase on the nitrogen removal,extracellular polymeric substances(EPS),microbial activity and microbial community of sequencing batch biofilm reactor(SBBR)have been evaluated in treating mariculture *** oxygen uptake rate and nitrification rate declined with DO concentration from 3–4 to 1–1.5mgL^(-1),whereas the denitrification rate had an *** activities of nitrifying enzymes reduced with the decrease of DO concentration at aerobic phase,but those of denitrifying enzymes illustrated opposite *** nitrification and denitrification rates displayed the similar variation tendency with the relevant enzymatic activities as DO concentration *** protein(PN)and polysaccharide(PS)content in EPS decreased as DO concentration declined,whereas the PN/PS ratio *** microbial community showed obvious difference as DO concentration decreased from 3–4 to 1–1.5mgL^(-1).The microbial co-occurrence,keystone taxa and sig-nificant difference illustrated some variations at different DO concentrations.
