草地植被结构对于其生产和生态功能至关重要,但大尺度信息严重匮乏.本研究结合多源遥感数据和深度学习,在区域尺度上厘清了青藏高原高寒草地基于群系的植物群落结构空间格局,并比较了其历史变化.过去40年,高寒草甸在高寒草地中的比例从50%上升到69%,反映了变暖变湿的环境变化.此外,高寒草甸和高寒草原中高山嵩草草甸和紫花针茅草原的优势度分别增强到76%和92%.其中,气候因子驱动了紫花针茅草原近些年的分布;高山嵩草草甸近些年的分布则并非完全由气候驱动,人类活动可能起重要作用.本研究首次探索了区域尺度植被结构特征与历史变化,为认识青藏高原草地变化的驱动力及其空间异质性提供了新视角.

The subsurface of urban cities is becoming increasingly congested.In-time records of subsur-face structures are of vital importance for the maintenance and management of urban infrastructure beneath or above the ground.Ground-penetrating radar(GPR)is a nondestructive testing method that can survey and image the subsurface without excava-tion.However,the interpretation of GPR relies on the operator’s experience.An automatic workflow was proposed for recognizing and classifying subsurface structures with GPR using computer vision and machine learning techniques.The workflow comprises three stages:first,full-cover GPR measurements are processed to form the C-scans;second,the abnormal areas are extracted from the full-cover C-scans with coefficient of variation-active contour model(CV-ACM);finally,the extracted segments are recognized and classified from the corresponding B-scans with aggregate channel feature(ACF)to produce a semantic map.The selected computer vision methods were validated by a controlled test in the laboratory,and the entire workflow was evaluated with a real,on-site case study.The results of the controlled and on-site case were both promising.This study establishes the necessity of a full-cover 3D GPR survey,illustrating the feasibility of integrating advanced computer vision techniques to analyze a large amount of 3D GPR survey data,and paves the way for automating subsurface modeling with GPR.

White-box cryptography aims to provide secure cryptographic primitives and implementations for the white-box attack model, which assumes that an adversary has full access to the implementation of the cryptographic algorithms. Real-world applications require highly efficient and secure white-box schemes,whereas the existing proposals cannot meet this demand. In this paper, we design a new white-box block cipher based on addition/rotation/XOR(ARX) primitives and random maximal distance separable(MDS)matrix, white-box ARX(WARX), aiming for efficient implementations in both black-and white-box models.The implementation of WARX in the black-box model is nine times faster than SPNbox-16 from ASIACRYPT’16, and the implementation in the white-box model is more efficient than SPNbox-16 and WEM from CT-RSA’17. Moreover, the security of WARX in both black-and white-box models is analyzed, which ensures its practical applicability. The design of WARX shows that ARX primitives and random linear layer can improve the efficiency of a white-box block cipher. This article may inspire more provably secure and efficient white-box block ciphers and help to narrow the gap between provably secure white-box schemes from academia and highly applicable schemes in great demand from industry.

Soil temperatures at different depths down the soil profile are important agro-meteorological indicators which are necessary for ecological modeling and precision agricultural activities. In this paper, using time series of soil temperature(ST) measured at different depths(0, 5, 10, 20, and 40 cm) at agro-meteorological stations in northern China as reference data, ST was estimated from land surface temperature(LST) and normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) derived from AQUA/TERRA MODIS data, and solar declination(Ds) in univariate and multivariate linear regression models. Results showed that when daytime LST is used as predictor, the coefficient of determination(R^2) values decrease from the 0 cm layer to the 40 cm layer. Additionally, with the use of nighttime LST as predictor, the R^2 values were relatively higher at 5, 10 and 15 cm depths than those at 0, 20 and 40 cm depths. It is further observed that the multiple linear regression models for soil temperature estimation outperform the univariate linear regression models based on the root mean squared errors(RMSEs) and R^2. These results have demonstrated the potential of MODIS data in tandem with the Ds parameter for soil temperature estimation at the upper layers of the soil profile where plant roots grow in. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt at the synergistic use of LST, NDVI and Ds for soil temperature estimation at different depths of the upper layers of the soil profile, representing a significant contribution to soil remote sensing.

Interpreting the functional impacts of genetic variants(GVs)is an important challenge for functional genomic studies in crops and next-generation breeding.Previous studies in rice(Oryza sativa)have focused mainly on the identification of GVs,whereas systematic functional annotation of GVs has not yet been performed.Here,we present a functional impact map of GVs in rice.We curated haplotype information for 17397026 GVs from sequencing data of 4726 rice accessions.We quantitatively evaluated the effects of missense mutations in coding regions in each haplotype based on the conservation of amino acid residues and obtained the effects of 918848 non-redundant missense GVs.Furthermore,we generated high-quality chromatin accessibility(CA)data from six representative rice tissues and used these data to train deep convolutional neural network models to predict the impacts of 5067405 GVs for CA in regulatory regions.We characterized the functional properties and tissue specificity of the GV effects and found that large-effect GVs in coding and regulatory regions may be subject to selection in different directions.Finally,we demonstrated how the functional impact map could be used to prioritize causal variants in mapping populations.This impact map will be a useful resource for accelerating gene cloning and functional studies in rice,and can be freely queried in RiceVarMap V2.0(http://***).

Assessment of Flood Catastrophe Risk for Grain Production at the Provincial Scale in China Based on the BMM Method

Flood catastrophe risk assessment is imperative for the steady development of agriculture under the context of global climate change,and meanwhile,it is an urgent scientific issue need to be solved in agricultural risk assessment discipline.This paper developed the methodology of flood catastrophe risk assessment,which can be shown as the standard process of crop loss calculation,Monte Carlo simulation,the generalized extreme value distribution（GEV） fitting,and risk evaluation.Data on crop loss were collected based on hectares covered by natural disasters,hectares affected by natural disasters,and hectares destroyed by natural disasters using the standard equation.Monte Carlo simulation based on appropriate distribution was used to expand sample size to overcome the insufficiency of crop loss data.Block maxima model（BMM） approach based on the extreme value theory was for modeling the generalized extreme value distribution（GEV） of flood catastrophe loss,and then flood catastrophe risk at the provincial scale in China was calculated.The Type III Extreme distribution（Weibull） has a weighted advantage of modeling flood catastrophe risk for grain production.The impact of flood catastrophe to grain production in China was significantly serious,and high or very high risk of flood catastrophe mainly concentrates on the central and eastern regions of China.Given the scenario of suffering once-in-a-century flood disaster,for majority of the major-producing provinces,the probability of 10% reduction of grain output is more than 90%.Especially,the probabilities of more than 15% decline in grain production reach up to 99.99,99.86,99.69,and 91.60% respectively in Anhui,Jilin,Liaoning,and Heilongjiang.Flood catastrophe assessment can provide multifaceted information about flood catastrophe risk that can help to guide management of flood catastrophe.

Land use and its dynamics have attracted considerable scientific attention for their significant ecological and socioeconomic implications.Many studies have investigated the past changes in land use,but efforts exploring the potential changes in land use and implications under future scenarios are still lacking.Here we simulate the future land use changes and their impacts on ecosystem services in Northeast China(NEC) over the period of 2000–2050 using the CLUE–S(Conversion of Land Use and its Effects at Small regional extent) model under the scenarios of ecological security(ESS),food security(FSS) and comprehensive development(CDS).The model was validated against remote sensing data in 2005.Overall,the accuracy of the CLUE–S model was evaluated at 82.5%.Obtained results show that future cropland changes mainly occur in the Songnen Plain and the Liaohe Plain,forest and grassland changes are concentrated in the southern Lesser Khingan Mountains and the western Changbai Mountains,while the Sanjiang Plain will witness major changes of the wetlands.Our results also show that even though CDS is defined based on the goals of the regional development plan,the ecological service value(ESV) under CDS is RMB 2656.18 billion in 2050.The ESV of CDS is lower compared with the other scenarios.Thus,CDS is not an optimum scenario for eco-environmental protection,especially for the wetlands,which should be given higher priority for future development.The issue of coordination is also critical in future development.The results can help to assist structural adjustments for agriculture and to guide policy interventions in NEC.

Congenital heart disease(CHD)is one of the most common causes of major birth defects,with a prevalence of 1%.Although an increasing number of studies have reported the etiology of CHD,the findings scattered throughout the literature are difficult to retrieve and utilize in research and clinical practice.We therefore developed CHDbase,an evidence-based knowledgebase of CHD-related genes and clinical manifestations manually curated from 1114 publications,linking 1124 susceptibility genes and 3591 variations to more than 300 CHD types and related syndromes.Metadata such as the information of each publication and the selected population and samples,the strategy of studies,and the major findings of studies were integrated with each item of the research record.We also integrated functional annotations through parsing50 databases/tools to facilitate the interpretation of these genes and variations in disease pathogenicity.We further prioritized the significance of these CHD-related genes with a gene interaction network approach and extracted a core CHD sub-network with 163 genes.The clear genetic landscape of CHD enables the phenotype classification based on the shared genetic origin.Overall,CHDbase provides a comprehensive and freely available resource to study CHD susceptibilities,supporting a wide range of users in the scientific and medical communities.CHDbase is accessible at http://***.

From octahedral structure motif to sub-nanosecond phase transitions in phase change materials for data storage

Phase change random access memory(PCRAM) has been successfully applied in the computer storage architecture, as storage class memory, to bridge the performance gap between DRAM and Flashbased solid-state drive due to its good scalability, 3 D-integration ability, fast operation speed and compatible with CMOS technology. Focusing on phase change materials and PCRAM for decades, we have successfully developed 128 Mb embedded PCRAM chips, which can meet the requirements of most embedded systems.3 D Xpoint(3 D PCRAM), invented by Intel and Micron, has been regarded as a new breakthrough in the last 25 years since the application of NAND in 1989, which represents state-of-the-art memory technology.This technology has some remarkable features, such as the confined device structure with 20 nm size, the metal crossbar electrodes to reduce the resistance variations in PCRAM arrays, and the ovonic threshold switching selector that can provide a high drive current and a low leakage current. A good understanding of phase change mechanism is of great help to design new phase change materials with fast operation speed,low power consumption and long-lifetime. In this paper, we firstly review the development of PCRAM and different understandings on phase change mechanisms in recent years, and then propose a new view on the mechanism, which is based on the octahedral structure motifs and vacancies. Octahedral structure motifs are generally found in both amorphous and crystalline phase change materials. They are considered to be the basic units during phase transition, which are severely defective in the amorphous phase. These configurations turn into more ordered ones after minor local rearrangements, the growth of which results in the crystallization of rocksalt(RS) phase with a large amount of vacancies in the cation sites. Further driven by thermodynamic driving force, these vacancies move and layer along certain directions; consequently, the metastable RS structure transforms into the stable hexagonal(HEX) structure.
