Confining effect of oxide film on tin whisker growth

Spontaneous tin whisker growth has been mysterious and catastrophic for more than half century. The difficulty in the research on this topic consists of the randomness of the whisker growth, the slow growth rate and many other tricky factors. Herein, with Ti2SnC-Sn as a new platform, fast tin whisker growth is realized to facilitate the research. The whisker morphology is found to be modulated by oxide film. A striated whisker morphology forms as growing in air, whereas a faceted morphology forms in ***, the evolution to the faceted morphology is attributed to the reconstruction of the whisker surface driven by surface energy reduction. The findings might open a new avenue to uncover the myths of this long-standing issue, and thus develop a long-awaited lead-free tin whisker mitigation strategy.

Organic coatings are the most widely employed approach for the promotion of corrosion resistance of magnesium(Mg)***,traditional organic coatings are weakly bonded to Mg substrates due to physical ***,a polyethylacrylate(PEA)coating was fabricated on Mg-Zn-YNd alloy via *** surface structure and chemical composition were characterized by means of scanning electron microscope(SEM),energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS),atomic force microscope(AFM)and Fourier transform infrared(FTIR)as well as time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometer(To F-SIMS).The results showed that the surface roughness of PEA coating was dominated by scan rate;while the coverage and integrity of PEA coating were mainly affected by the monomer concentration and sweep *** F-SIMS results indicated that PEA coating was wholly covered on Mg alloy,and the presence of C2H3Mg-fragment confirmed the covalent bond between PEA coating and Mg *** addition,DFT calculation results of the adsorption of EA molecules with Mg substrate agree well with the experimental phenomena and observation,suggesting that the electrons in 3s orbit of Mg atoms and 2pz orbit of C1 atom participated in the formation of covalent bond between PEA coating and Mg *** polarization curves and immersion test demonstrated that the PEA coatings could effectively enhance the corrosion resistance of Mg *** platelet adhesion results designated that platelets were barely visible on PEA coating,which implied that PEA coating could effectively prevent the thrombosis and coagulation of *** coating might be a promising candidate coating of Mg alloy for cardiovascular stent.

mRNA detection in living cell using phosphorothioate-modified molecular beacon

In this study, GFP mRNA in COS-7 cell and GFP-transfected COS-7 cell was detected in real time using phosphorothioate-modified molecular beacon based on living cell imaging method. Results showed that phosphorothioate-modified molecular beacon still kept the advantages of molecular beacon, such as, excellent selectivity, high sensitivity, and no separation detection. In addition, this modification could significantly increase the nuclease resistance of molecular beacon. Phosphorothioate-modified molecular beacon can efficiently reduce the false positive signal and improve the accuracy of living cell mRNA detection.

GA-treated and non-treated G2 pea cDNAs were compared using a newly developed method called cDNA representational difference analysis (cDNA-RDA), and several GA-suppressed mRNAs were found. After cloning of the larger fragments PGAS1-3 ( pea GA-suppressed cDNA 1-3), they were demonstrated to be expressed only in pea tissue not treated with GA3 through Northern analysis. Compared with subtractive hybridization and differ-ential display techniques, this method not only can be easily manipulated but also has a relatively low rate of false posi-tive and is highly repetitive. It is the major progress in molecular cloning techniques.

The capacitance of an organic Schottky diode based on copper phthalocyanine （CuPc） is investigated. Based on the organic small-signal equivalent model established, we calculate the reverse capacitance CMetal Of the organic Schottky diode with different kinds of metal cathodes （Mg, Al, Au）. It is found that the reverse capacitance of the organic Schottky diode shows behavior as CMg 〉 CAl 〉 CAu at the same frequency, and according to our analysis, the reverse Schottky junction capacitance Cj is expected to have little effect on the reverse capacitance of the organic Schottky diode, and the space-charge limited current capacitance Us is considered to dominate the reverse capacitance, which limits the improvement of frequency characteristics of organic Schottky diodes.

From aniline to phenol: carbon-nitrogen bond activation via uranyl photoredox catalysis

Carbon-nitrogen bond activation, via uranyl photoredox catalysis with water, enabled the conversion of 40 protogenetic anilines, 8 N-substituted anilines and 9 aniline-containing natural products/pharmaceuticals to the corresponding phenols in an ambient environment. A single-electron transfer process between a protonated aniline and uranyl catalyst, which was disclosed by radical quenching experiments and Stern-Volmer analysis, facilitated the following oxygen atom transfer process between the radical cation of protonated anilines and uranyl peroxide originating from water-splitting.18O labeling and15N tracking unambiguously depicted that the oxygen came from water and amino group left as ammonium salt. The 100-fold efficiency of the flow operation demonstrated the great potential of the conversion process for industrial synthetic application.

This paper reports the design of a metamaterial absorber with direction-selective and polarisation-insensitive property. Both theoretical and simulated results reveal that the absorber has a distinct absorption point with direction selectivity at 7.48 GHz, which is related to the resonance of the metamaterial and is not influenced by the polarisation. The retrieved impedance indicates that the impedance of the absorber can be tuned to approximatively match the impedance of the free space on one side and not to match the impedance of the free space on the other side. This design can result in the minimal reflectance, the minimal transmission and the highest absorbance at the absorption frequency. The distribution of the power loss indicates that the absorber is an excellent electromagnetic wave collector： the wave is first trapped and reinforced in certain specific locations, and then mostly consumed. The distribution of the surface current is consistent with the design, the retrieved impedance and the distribution of the power loss. This absorber may have applications in many scientific and technological areas.

Scattering-enhanced femtosecond optical parametric generation （OPG） has been observed and studied in detail, which may decrease the pump threshold of OPGs dramatically and may make OPGs reliable. The experimental demonstration in a LiNbO3 crystal shows that strong enough OPG can be obtained at pump intensity of only about 30GW/cm2 which is well below the crystal damage threshold Either a synchronized pulsed laser or a cw laser has been used as the scattering source, of which the wavelength, spectral shape and irradiating angle are not strictly required.
