Chromium propionate improves performance and carcass traits in broilers

Reconstruction after pancreatoduodenectomy:Pancreatojejunostomy vs pancreatogastrostomy

Pancreatic surgeons try to find the best technique for reconstruction after pancreatoduodenectomy(PD) in order to decrease postoperative complications,mainly pancreatic fistulas(PF).In this work,we compare the two most frequent techniques of reconstruction after PD,pancreatojejunostomy(PJ) and pancreatogastrostomy(PG),in order to determine which of the two is better.A systematic review of the literature was performed,including major meta-analysis articles,clinical randomized trials,systematic reviews,and retrospective studies.A total of 64 articles were finally *** and PG are usually responsible for most of the postoperative morbidity,mainly due to the onset of PF,being considered a major trigger of life-threatening complications such as intra-abdominal abscess and *** included systematic reviews reported a significant difference only in the incidence of intraabdominal collections favouring ***,delayed gastric emptying and mortality were not *** there was heterogeneity between these studies,all were conducted in specialized centers by highly experienced surgeons,and the surgical care was likely to be similar for all the *** disadvantages of PG include an increased incidence of delayed gastric emptying and of main pancreatic duct obstruction due to overgrowth by the gastric *** function appears to be worse after PG than after PJ,resulting in severe atrophic changes in the remnant *** on the type of PJ or PG used,the PF rate and other complications can also be *** best method to deal with the pancreatic stump after PD remains *** choice of method of pancreatic anastomosis could be based on individual experience and on the surgeon's preference and adherence to basic principles such as good exposure and *** conclusion,up to now none of the techniques can be considered superior or be recommended as standard for reconstruction after PD.

AIM: To measure the forces applied during distraction of growing-rods in early onset scoliosis(EOS), aimed at developing a motorized elongation ***: A consecutive series of measurements were carried out to analyze the forces applied by the surgeon during distraction of single growing-rods in 10 patients affected by EOS(mean age 8.3 years; range 6 to 10 years) undergoing the first distraction 6 months following implantation of the rods. For each measurement, output from the transducer of a dedicated pair of distraction calipers was recorded at zero load status and at every 1 mm of distraction, up to a maximum of 12 mm for each of the two connected ***: Twenty measurements were obtained showing a linear increase of the load with increasing distraction, with a mean peak force of 485 n at 12 mm distraction and a single reading over 500 n. We did not observe bone fractures or ligament disruptions during or after rod elongations. There was one case of superficial wound infection in the ***: The safe peak force carrying capacity of a motorized device for distraction of growing-rods is 500 n.

Lipid droplets as metabolic determinants for stemness and chemoresistance in cancer

Previously regarded as simple fat storage particles,new evidence suggests thatlipid droplets(LDs)are dynamic and functional organelles involved in keycellular processes such as membrane biosynthesis,lipid metabolism,cellsignalling and ***,an increased LD content is one of the mostapparent features resulting from lipid metabolism reprogramming necessary tosupport the basic functions of cancer *** have been associated to differentcellular processes involved in cancer progression and aggressiveness,such astumorigenicity,invasion and metastasis,as well as ***,all of these processes are controlled by a subpopulation of highly aggressivetumoral cells named cancer stem cells(CSCs),suggesting that LDs may befundamental elements for stemness in *** the key role of CSCs onchemoresistance and disease relapse,main factors of therapy failure,the design ofn.v.l therapeutic approaches targeting these cells may be the only chance forlong-term survival in cancer *** this sense,their biology and functionalproperties render LDs excellent candidates for target discovery and design ofcombined therapeutic *** this review,we summarise the currentknowledge identifying LDs and CSCs as main contributors to cancer aggressiveness,metastasis and chemoresistance.

Despite recent progress in deep-sea biodiversity assessments in the Southern Ocean （SO）, there remain gaps in our knowledge that hamper efficient deep-sea monitoring in times of rapid climate change. These include geographical sampling bias, depth and size-dependent faunal gaps in biology, ecology, distribution, and phylogeography, and the evolution of SO species. The phenomena of species patchiness and rarity are still not well understood, possibly because of our limited understanding of physiological adaptations and thresholds. Even though some shallow water species have been investigated physiologically, community-scale studies on the effects of multiple stressors related to ongoing environmental change, including temperature rise, ocean acidification, and shifts in deposition of phytoplankton, are completely unknown for deep-sea organisms. Thus, the establishment of long-term and coordinated monitoring programs, such as those rapidly growing under the umbrella of the Southern Ocean Observing System （SOOS） or the Deep Ocean Observing Strategy （DOOS）, may represent unique tools for measuring the status and trends of deep-sea and SO ecosystems.

AIM To assess the relationship between the presence of toll-like receptor 4(TLR4) polymorphisms and bacterial infections in cirrhotic patients with ascites. METHODS We prospectively included consecutive patients with cirrhosis and ascites hospitalized during a 6-year period. Patients with human immunodeficiency virus(HIv) infection or any other immunodeficiency, patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma(beyond Milan's criteria) or any other condition determining poor short-term prognosis, and patients with a permanent urinary catheter were excluded. The presence of D299 G and/or T399 I TLR4 polymorphisms was determined by sequencing and related to the incidence and probability of bacterial infections, other complications of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and mortality during follow-up. A multivariate analysis to identify predictive variables of mortality in the whole series was performed. RESULTS We included 258 patients: 28(10.8%) were carriers of D299G and/or T399I TLR4 polymorphisms(polymorphism group) and 230 patients were not(wildtype group). The probability of developing any bacterial infection at one-year follow-up was 78% in the polymorphism group and 69% in the wild-type group(P = 0.54). The one-year probability of presenting infections caused by gram-negative bacilli(51% vs 44%, P = 0.68), infections caused by gram-positive cocci(49% vs 40%, P = 0.53), and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis(29% vs 34%, respectively, P = 0.99) did not differ between the two groups. The oneyear probability of transplant-free survival was 55% in the polymorphism group and 66% in the wild-type group(P = 0.15). Multivariate analysis confirmed that age, Child-Pugh score, active alcohol intake, previous hepatic encephalopathy, hepatocellular carcinoma and serum creatinine were associated with a higher risk of death during follow-up.
