Sonographic fatty liver, overweight and ischemic heart disease

AIM: To demonstrate the prevalence of sonographic fatty liver, overweight and ischemic heart disease (IHD) among the male workers in Taiwan, and to investigate the possible association of these three ***: From July to September 2003, a total of 2 088 male aircraft-maintenance workers aged from 22to 65 years (mean 40.5) underwent an annual health examination, including anthropometrical evaluation, blood pressure measurement, personal medical history assessment,biochemical blood analysis, abdominal ultrasonographic examination and digital electrocardiography (ECG). The Student's t-test, x2 test and multivariate logistic regression analysis were utilized to evaluate the relationship between IHD and salient risk ***: The all-over prevalence of overweight was 41.4%, and that of fatty liver was 29.5% (mild, moderate and severe fatty liver being 14.5%, 11.3%, and 3.7%,respectively); while the prevalence of ischemic changes on ECG was 17.1% in this study. The abnormal rates for conventional IHD risk factors including hypertension,dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia and overweight increased in accordance with the severity of fatty liver. Overweight and severity of fatty liver were independently associated with increased risks for developing IHD. Overweight subjects had a 1.32-fold (95%CI: 1.01-1.73) increased IHD risk. Participants with mild, moderate, and severe fatty liver had a 1.88-fold (95%CI: 1.37-2.6), 2.37-fold (95%CI: 1.66-3.37) and 2.76-fold (95%CI: 1.62-4.72)increased risk for developing IHD. The prevalence of ischemic ECG for the fatty liver-affected subjects with or without overweight was 30.1% and 19.1%, while that of overweight subjects free from fatty liver was 14.4%.Compared to the subjects without fatty liver nor overweight,IHD risk for the three subgroups above was as follows:OR: 2.95 (95%CI:2.31-4.09), OR: 1.60 (95%CI: 1.07-2.39)and OR: 1.11 (95%CI: 0.78-1.56), ***: The presence of fatty liver and its severity should be

Pharmacological studies of traditional Chinese medicine to treat Alzheimer disease

Background: Shen-wu Capsule (SWC) is a new compound containing 6 kinds of traditional Chinese herbs. TSG is a major effective component of SWC. Objective: To investigate the pharmacological effects of SWC and TSG on multiple kinds of AD-like animal models. Methods: The drugs were intragastrically administered to the animal models for 1 or 2 months. Morris water maze test was used to detect learning/memory ability, microarray and RT-PCR to measure gene expression, Western blotting and immuno-histochemistry tO determine related proteins. Results:(1) In APP transgenic mice, SWC and TSG improved learning/memory ability, and decreased Aβcontent andβ-secretase expression; (2) in Aβbrain injection model, SWC and TSG inhibited microglial activation, and decreased IL-1 and tumor necrosis factor a (TNFα) content; (3) in ibotanic acid-induced basal forebrain colinergic damage rat model, SWC and TSG improved learning/memory ability, increased the ratio of cholinacetyl-transfetase (CHAT) / cholinesterase (AchE), or enhanced M-receptor density; (4) in naturally aged rats of 24 months old, SWC and TSG improved learning/memory ability, decreased cholinergic cell death, and increased expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) and its receptor trkA in hippocumpus;

Background:In vitro fertilization(IVF)has emerged as a transformative solution for ***,achieving favorable live-birth outcomes remains *** clinical IVF practices in IVF involve the collection of heterogeneous embryo data through diverse methods,including static images and temporal ***,traditional embryo selection methods,primarily reliant on visual inspection of morphology,exhibit variability and are contingent on the experience of ***,an automated system that can evaluate heterogeneous embryo data to predict the final outcomes of live births is highly ***:We employed artificial intelligence(AI)for embryo morphological grading,blastocyst embryo selection,aneuploidy prediction,and final live-birth outcome *** developed and validated the AI models using multitask learning for embryo morphological assessment,including pronucleus type on day 1 and the number of blastomeres,asymmetry,and fragmentation of blastomeres on day 3,using 19,201 embryo photographs from 8271 patients.A neural network was trained on embryo and clinical metadata to identify good-quality embryos for implantation on day 3 or day 5,and predict live-birth ***,a 3D convolutional neural network was trained on 418 time-lapse videos of preimplantation genetic testing(PGT)-based ploidy outcomes for the prediction of aneuploidy and consequent live-birth ***:These two approaches enabled us to automatically assess the implantation *** combining embryo and maternal metrics in an ensemble AI model,we evaluated live-birth outcomes in a prospective cohort that achieved higher accuracy than experienced embryologists(46.1%vs.30.7%on day 3,55.0%vs.40.7%on day 5).Our results demonstrate the potential for AI-based selection of embryos based on characteristics beyond the observational abilities of human clinicians(area under the curve:0.769,95%confidence interval:0.709-0.820).These findings coul

Reactive wetting behaviors of Sn/Cu systems: A molecular dynamics study

Influences of temperature and Sn-Cu droplet's composition on reactive wettings of Cu(100), Cu(110), and Cu(111) surfaces were analyzed, by using molecular dynamics(MD) calculations. As a result, the spreading on Cu(110)(Cu(100)) has the fastest(slowest) wetting kinetics. A higher temperature or a diluter Cu content in the Sn-Cu alloy droplet results in a higher wettability. Moreover, this work has addressed a theory for positioning the interface separating the liquidus and solidus alloys in the spreading film to confirm the hypothesis that the reactive wetting will come to the end when the interface saturates with the temperature-dependent solidus weight fraction of Cu.

China’s Belt&Road(“B&R”)initiative has attracted much attention in recent *** studies have assessed the potential impacts of this initiative from the economic,political,foreign relations,and military ***,very little attention has been paid to examine the opportunities and challenges of this new initiative from a demographic ***,this study investigates into the population dynamics of 65 countries in the B&R region,and explores the demographic dynamics of this regional cooperation *** on graphic visualization,the demographic heterogeneities within the B&R region,in terms of current stages of demographic transitions,population age structure,and demographic windows of opportunities have been ***,a model-based cluster analysis has been conducted to classify the B&R countries into two *** group consists of countries with younger population,low education access,and larger gender gap in the labor market,while the other group comprises of more aged population and has better performances in economic development,education enrolment,and female labor *** demographic windows of opportunities in the former group will remain open for the coming decades;whereas the windows have already closed or is about to close very soon in the latter *** former group should take lessons from the latter concerning how to better prepare themselves for the demographic ***,the curvilinear relationship between wealth and well-being has a complicated structure and the B&R initiative should focus not only on economic development but also on the human well-being.

Degradation of retinoid X receptor α by TPA through proteasome pathway in gastric cancer cells

AIM: To investigate and determine the mechanism and signal pathway of tetradecanoylphorbol-1, 3-acetate (TPA) in degradation of RXRα.METHODS: Gastric cancer cell line, BGC-823 was used in the experiments. The expression level of R XRα protein was detected by Western blot. Nuclear and cytoplasmic protein fractions were prepared through lysis of cell and *** and translocation of RXRα were observed under laser-scanning confocal microscope through labeling specific anti-RXRα antibody and corresponding immunofiuorescent antibody as secondary antibody. Different inhibitors were used as ***: In BGC-823 cells, RXRα was expressed in the nucleus. When cells were treated with TPA, expression of RXRα was repressed in a time-dependent and TPAconcentration-dependent manner. Meanwhile, translocation of RXR from the nucleus to the cytoplasm occurred, also in a time-dependent manner. When cells were pre-incubated with proteasome inhibitor MG132 for 3 hrs, followed by TPA for another 12 hrs, TPA-induced RXRα degradation was inhibited. Further observation of RXRα translocation in the presence of MG132 showed that MG-132 could block TPAinduced RXRα redistribution. Conversely, when RXRαtranslocation was inhibited by LMB, an inhibitor for blocking protein export from the nucleus, TPA could not repress expression of RXRα.CONCLUSION: TPA could induce the degradation of RXRα protein in BGC-823 cells, and this degradation is time-and TPA-concentration-dependent. Furthermore, the degradation of RXRα by TPA is via a proteasome pathway and associated with RXRα translocation from the nucleus to the cytoplasm.
