Objectives: To study the epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic aspects of gastric adenocarcinoma at the Joliot Curie Institute in Dakar. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study over a seven-year period from January 2010 to December 2017 at the Joliot Curie Institute in Dakar. All cases of gastric adenocarcinoma proven by fibroscopy followed by histology or proven on the histological analysis of a surgical specimen were taken into account. The parameters studied were age, risk factors, stages of the disease, treatment and prognosis. Results: There were 54 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma over a period of 7 years. The average age was 54.74 years with extremes of 25 and 84 years. A male predominance was noted (35/54). The main risk factors found were alcohol (5/54), tobacco (13/54), Helicobacter pilori (4/54), gastric ulcer (12/54). Epigastralgia was the most frequent clinical manifestation. Gd202S：Eu3＋ nanoparticles were synthesized using two step process consisting of sulfuration of basic carbonates obtained by homogenous precipitation. Annealing of lanthanide nitrates at total concentration of 5x 10^-3 mol/L in a water solution containing relatively high, three molar concentration of urea ensured the optimal conditions for the reproducible preparation of uniform and small spherical particles. During sulfuration step elemental sulfur was mixed with precursor which eliminated necessity of using an auxiliary furnace and provided sulfur-reach reaction atmosphere. Such optimized protocol afforded synthesis of spherical and non-agglomerated nanoparticles with diameter smaller than 100 nm. The precursors morphology was maintained, but particles size was reduced by 15%-20% during sulfuration. The results indicated that higher emission intensity was observed for Gd202S：Eu3＋（8%） oxysulfide sample synthesized using crystalline Gd（CO3）OH precursor, than for that obtained from amorphous Gd2（OH）2（CO3）2.H20 precursor, although some further efforts to improve morphology of the former are still required.

The persistent luminescence(PersL)dependence on the dopants and derived mechanism of trapping and de-trapping processes were investigated in Y3Al2Ga3O12(YAGG)based nanophosphor,doped with Ce^3+and/or Cr^3+.It is found that the presence of Cr^3+ions produce electron and hole traps and capture suitable charge after X-ray *** effect of irradiation on the carriers trapping and their pathways after excitation was studied by means of thermo luminescence *** the other hand,for blue light irradiation the mechanism seems to be *** the latter case,the Ce^3+ions,having the position of energy levels in the conduction band,become sensitizers for the electrons and main emission centres for the PersL(de-trapping process goes through Ce^3+).

Tb3＋-doped ZnSe and ZnSe/ZnS nanocrystals were synthesized using modified hot-injection method. The observation of the characteristic quantum dots absorption features in a time-gated excitation spectrum was recorded while monitoring Tb3＋ emission at 545 nm provided direct evidence for successful incorporation of dopant ions into semiconductor host. Relatively long decay time （-1.5 ms） of Tb3＋ emission indicated that dopant ions were well protected from interaction with surface ligands. Emission properties of core ZnSe：Tb3＋ nanocrystals were only slightly modified upon growth of ZnS shell.

Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLs) are indicators that allow assessing the quality of equipment and procedures from the point of view of the doses delivered to patients and subsequently initiate corrective actions if necessary. The purpose of this study is to encourage health professionals to investigate patient radiation doses and to determine whether those doses comply with the principles of radiation protection in medical fields so as to improve practices by reducing patient exposure without reducing clinical effectiveness. To perform this work, we have investigated patient doses for different radiological examinations from six (6) medical centers in Dakar, including the following nine routine types: chest (PA), abdomen (AP), pelvis (AP), cervical spine (AP), lumbar spine (AP, Lat), hip (AP), thoracic spine (AP, Lat). Three types of data were collected, i.e., X-ray tube machine data, patient data and output measurements. The data were analyzed statistically and the median, minimum, maximum, and third quartile values were calculated and displayed throughout boxplots graphs for all exams and medical centers. The two sigma range (95% confidence interval) was also checked. Comparison of third quartiles of Entrance Surface Dose (ESD) and Dose Area Product (DAP) by type of examination with recommended international DRLs was performed. The third quartile of ESD for pelvis (AP) and thoracic spine (AP) was up to 16% and 38% higher, respectively than their corresponding DRLs in the European Commission Report RP 180 Part 2. For all exams, except thoracic spine (lat), the third quartiles of the dose area product were higher than the corresponding DRLs in the above report. The source of dose variability between medical centers was related to many parameters such as poor radiographic techniques, lack of modern X-ray machines and adequately documented radiation protection practices. How a Cancer Registry Was Set Up in Senegal: An Example to Follow for a Developing Country

Objectives: Senegal, with the support of WHO, had begun the establishment of a National Cancer Registry in 2009, although it had been at a standstill since 1969;the objective of this work was to test the reliability of data collection tools and feasibility stages necessary for the validation of media before the establishment of a national cancer registry. Methodology: We conducted a non-exhaustive preliminary study over a period of three months from the first of January to 31 March 2010 at four major hospitals in Dakar at the time. Results: Two hundred and eighty-nine cases had been identified: 44% of men (n = 127) and 56% of women (n = 162) with a sex ratio of 0.8. The ages ranged from 20 to 90 years with an average of 50 years. The main diagnostic mode was essentially histological, with 76% of cases (n = 219). The most frequent locations were: ORL (ENT meaning Ear, Nose and Throat) with 25% of cases, liver 7% and bronchopulmonary 4.5% of cases. In men, liver cancer was the most common location and women for cervical cancer with 16%. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most common histological type with 68% of cases followed by adenocarcinoma with 22% of cases. Thirty-eight percent of patients were classified as stage III and IV. A quarter of our patients had received palliative treatment. In contrast, 15 (15%) had received chemotherapy and 4% had received radiotherapy. Data collection was satisfactory. Conclusion: Cancer is a reality in Senegal but it remains underdiagnosed. The materials made it possible to make the cancer registry effective throughout the country.

The subject of this article is a search for the long-term immunological effects of alloferon and 3 structural analogues of alloferon, which were earlier characterized by the highest pro-apoptotic activity in Tenebrio molitor. The differences in the actions of these peptides on immune response were observed. Alloferon increased nodulation and significantly phenoloxidase activity in the hemolymph of experimentally infected T. molitor. However, [Phe（p-NH2）^1 ]- and [Phe（p-OMe） ^1 ]-alloferon strongly inhibited cellular and humoral defense of the mealworm against Staphylococcus aureus infection. One day after injection of these peptides, the specific biochemical and morphological hallmarks of apoptosis in bacteria-challenged hemocytes were visible; in contrast, 3 days after peptides injection in all hemocytes, caspase activation was not observed. However, these new, circulating hemocytes differed from the control and the peptide-untreated bacteria-challenged hemocytes. They had an increased adhesion that led to a separation of viable, anucleated fragments of hemocytes that retain the ability to adhere and to form long filopodia. The peptide-induced separation ofhemocyte fragments may resemble the formation ofplatelets in mammals and perhaps play a role in sealing wounds in insects. The results of in vivo studies may suggest a long half-life of studied peptides in the hemolymph of mealworm. Moreover, we showed the importance of the N-terminal histidine residues at position one of the alloferon molecule for its immunological properties in insects. The results obtained here show that alloferon plays pleiotropic functions in insects.
