Water toxicity determination with electrochemically active bacteria(EAB)shows promise for providing early warnings for heavy metal pollution in ***,thus far,only idealized tests with a few types of heavy metals have been *** this study,an automatic water-toxicitydetermination system with high technical maturity was established,and the toxicological properties of common heavy metals were systematically *** results demonstrated that the common heavy metals linearly inhibited EAB currents in the range of 0.1 mg/L to 0.5 mg/*** toxicity ranking of the tested heavy metals was Pb^(2+)>Tl^(3+)>Cu^(2+)>Cd^(2+)>Zn^(2+)>Ni^(2+)>Hg^(2+)>As^(3+).The toxicity interaction mainly exhibited an antagonistic effect in binary heavy metal *** system can accurately determine surface water toxicity and rapidly monitor heavy metal pollution,with good repeatability and a long ***,this study demonstrates that EAB are capable of long-term(>60 d)surface water quality monitoring and on-site early warning of heavy metal pollution.

A quantitative description of a long-term series of aquatic environmental factors and their spatial distributions was generated using measured data from the Jiaojiang Estuary from 1982 to 2011. The aquatic environmental factors included suspended matter, salinity, and nutrients. Based on these factors, the aquatic ecosystem health in the Jiaojiang Estuary over the last 30 years was analyzed. The results indicated that the suspended matter concentration in the estuary was mainly affected by the amounts of suspended sediment and solid waste, with the value fluctuating over a long period, and the range of high concentration expanded continually; the salinity was mainly affected by precipitation and surface water resources, showing an overall decreasing trend, and the region with low salinity moved seaward and toward the reclamation areas; and the nutritional status, mainly affected by discharge of industrial wastewater and domestic sewage, was satisfactory in the 1980s and 1990s, but the status became severe in recent years. Reclamation had a great influence on these three factors： high reclamation strength led to a significant increase in the suspended matter concentration and a deterioration of the nutritional status, and the reclamation rate was negatively related with the salinity in the estuary. There was a significant positive correlation between the health status of the aquatic ecosystem and salinity, with a correlation coefficient of 0.93. The correlation coefficient between the health status and nutritional status was -0.71, while the correlation between the suspended matter concentration and health status was not as significant as that of the other two factors. The dynamics of the aquatic environment could be divided into four stages： sustainable health from the 1980s to the 1990s, continued deterioration from 2000 to 2003, improvement from 2004 to 2005, and secondary deterioration from 2006 to 2011. Effects of the conversion of natural tropical rainforest to monoculture rubber plantations on soil hydrological processes

Rubber plantations have increased signifcantly under unprecedented economic growth in tropical areas,which leads to soil degradation and thereby alters soil hydrological ***,our understanding of how forest conversion affects soil hydrological processes remains ***,we collected soil samples from secondary forests(SF)and rubber plantations(RP)to determine the soil hydrological *** found the topsoil(0-20 cm)water retention in SF was higher than that of RP but displayed the contrast pattern in a deeper soil layer(20-60 cm).Meanwhile,the soil infltration rates among the two vegetation types decreased signifcantly with infltration time,with higher stable soil infltration rates in SF than those in ***,soil properties were also impacted by the forest conversion,such as the topsoil capillary porosity(CP)and total porosity(TP)in SF were higher than those of RP but contrasted in a deep soil *** comparison,the topsoil bulk density(BD)in SF was lower than that of RP,but contrasted in the deep soil layer and reached a signifcant level in the 0-10 and 40-50 cm(P<0.05).Overall,the soil water retention was mainly determined by the CP,which could explain 31.56%of the total variance in soil water retention,followed by TP(26.57%)and soil BD(26.47%),whereas soil texture exerts a weak effect on soil water ***,we can conclude that the conversion of tropical rainforest into rubber plantations may accelerate soil erosion owing to its lower topsoil water retention and soil infltration rates.

The coastal area of the East China Sea has experienced rapid urbanization and industrialization in China since 1980 s, resulting in severe pollution of its *** resistance genes(ARGs) are regarded as a kind of emerging pollutant with potential high risk. The sediment samples were collected from Hangzhou Bay(HB),Xiangshan Bay(XB), and Taizhou Bay(TB) to investigate the spatial occurrence and distribution of 27 ARGs and class I integron–integrase gene(intI1) in the coastal area of the East China Sea. The PCR results showed the frequent presence of 11 ARGs and intI1 in the sediments of the three bays. The qPCR results further showed that sulfonamide resistance was the most prevalent ARG type and antibiotic target replacement and protection were the most important resistance mechanisms in the sediments. Regarding the subtype of ARGs, sulI, tetW, and dfrA13 were the most abundant ARGs, in which sulI was higher in TB(based on both the absolute and relative abundances) and dfrA13 was higher in HB(based on the relative abundances). The network analysis revealed that intI1 had significant correlations with tetC, sulI, sulII, and blaPSE-1. Oil was the key connected factor, which had positive connections with sulI, sulII, and blaPSE-1. In addition, the joint effect of heavy metals and nutrients & organic pollutants might be crucial for the fate of ARGs in the coastal sediments.

The forest ecosystem plays a pivotal role in contributing greenhouse gases to the *** order to characterize the temporal pattern of nitrous oxide(N_2O) emissions and identify the key factors affecting N_2O emissions from a Masson pine forest in a hilly red-soil region in subtropical central China,we measured the N_2O emissions in Jinjing of Hunan Province using the static chambergas chromatographic method for 3 years(2010-2012) and analyzed the relationships between the N_2O fluxes and the environmental *** results revealed that the N_2O fluxes over the 3 years varied from-36.0 to 296.7 μg N m^(-2) h^(-1),averaging 18.4±5.6 μg N m^(-2) h^(-1)(n=3).The average annual N_2O emissions were estimated to be 1.6±0.3 kg N ha^(-1) year^(-1).The N_2O fluxes exhibited clear intra-annual(seasonal) variations as they were higher in summers and lower in *** with other forest observations in the subtropics,N_2O emissions at our site were relatively high,possibly due to the high local dry/wet N deposition,and were mostly sensitive to variations in precipitation and soil ammonium N *** this work,a multiple linear regression model was developed to determine the influence of environmental factors on N_2O emissions,in which a category predictor of "Season" was intentionally used to account for the seasonal variation of the N_2O *** a model explained almost 40%of the total variation in daily N_2O emissions from the Masson pine forest soil studied(P<0.001).

Health Risk Assessment of Centralized Drinking Water Sources in Small Towns of Chongqi City: A Case Study of Beibei District

Based on the health risk assessment model of water quality recommended by United States environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the health risk of five centralized drinking water sources in small towns of Beibei District, Chongqing City was evaluated. The results showed that the risk of health hazard of chemical carcinogen arsenic did not exceed the acceptable level recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP)(5.0×10 -5 a -1 ), but was still at the same order of magnitude as the recommended value of ICRP. The risk of the highest health hazard was 127 times higher than the maximum acceptable level recommended by Sweden EPA and Holland EPA (1.0×10 -6 a -1 ). The health risk of As in genetic toxic substances at monitoring points A, B, and C accounted for 99.99% of the total risk, showing that As was the main pollutant that posed the health risk, so priority should be given to the prevention and control of As pollution in the centralized drinking water sources in Chongqing towns.

With rapid economic growth in China, anthropogenic reactive nitrogen （Nr） emissions have more than doubled over the last two or three decades. Atmospheric Nr pollution is an environmental concern in China especially in megacities such as Beijing. In order to identify the impact of emission sources on atmospheric Nr pollution, we measured atmospheric Nr concentrations and their isotopic composition （δ15N） dynamics at three typical sites： landfill, pig farm and road traffic sites in Beijing from April 2010 to March 2011. Passive samplers were used for monitoring ammonia （NH3） and nitrogen dioxide （NO2）, two major Nr species, while their δ15N values were measured by a diffusion method combined with mass spectrometer approach. The raw water pool of the landfill and fattening house of the pig farm were important NH3 sources with mean NH3 concentrations being 2,829 and 2,369 μg/m3, respectively, while the road traffic site was a minor NH3 source （10.6 μg/m3）. NH3 concentrations at sites besides the landfill and roads were high in summer and low in winter due to the annual variation of temperature and the change of emission source intensity. In contrast, the NH3 concentrations inside the pig farm house were high in winter and low in summer, for the barn windows were open in summer and closed in winter. The mean NO2 concentrations were 89.8, 32.9 and 23.0 μg/m3 at the road traffic, the landfill and pig farm sites, respectively. Due to vehicle fuel combustion, NO2 concentration at the road traffic was the highest among the three sources, and the road traffic was a main NO2 emission source. PM10, pNH4＊ and pNO3- concentrations in particulate matter were higher in summer than in winter （except PM10 for the pig farm）. The δ15NH3 values ranged from -19.14‰ to 7.82‰, with an average of-0.05‰ for the landfill site, and the lowest values were observed in June and July.
