Functional neuroanatomy in panic disorder:Status quo of the research

AIM To provide an overview of the current research in the functional neuroanatomy of panic *** Panic disorder(PD) is a frequent psychiatric disease. Gorman et al(1989; 2000) proposed a comprehensive neuroanatomical model of PD, which suggested that fear-and anxiety-related responses are mediated by a so-called "fear network" which is centered in the amygdala and includes the hippocampus, thalamus, hypothalamus, periaqueductal gray region, locus coeruleus and other brainstem sites. We performed a systematic search by the electronic database PubMed. Thereby, the main focus was laid on recent neurofunctional, neurostructural, and neurochemical studies(from the period between January 2012 and April 2016). Within this frame, special attention was given to the emerging field of imaging genetics. RESULTS We noted that many neuroimaging studies have reinforced the role of the "fear network" regions in the pathophysiology of panic disorder. However, recent functional studies suggest abnormal activation mainly in an extended fear network comprising brainstem, anterior and midcingulate cortex(ACC and MCC), insula, and lateral as well as medial parts of the prefrontal cortex. Interestingly, differences in the amygdala activation were not as consistently reported as one would predict from the hypothesis of Gorman et al(2000). Indeed, amygdala hyperactivation seems to strongly depend on stimuli and experimental paradigms, sample heterogeneity and size, as well as on limitations of neuroimaging techniques. Advanced neurochemical studies have substantiated the major role of serotonergic, noradrenergic and glutamatergic neurotransmission in the pathophysiology of PD. However, alterations of GABAergic function in PD are still a matter of debate and also their specificity remains questionable. A promising new research approach is "imaging genetics". Nuclear DNA helicase II (NDH II), or RNA helicase A (RHA), was initially discovered in mammals by conventional protein purification methods. Molecular cloning identified apparent sequence ho- mologies between NDH II and a Drosophila protein named maleless (MLE), the latter being essential for the Drosophila X-chromosome dosage compensation. Increasing amounts of evidence suggest that NDH II is involved in multiple aspects of cellular and viral DNA and RNA metabolism. Moreover the functions of NDH II may have potential clinical implications related to viral infection, autoimmune diseases, or even tumorigenesis.

Non-tidal tilt and strain signals recorded at the Geodynamic Observatory Moxa,Thuringia/Germany

Since end of the 90s of the last century the seismological station Moxa was extended and developed into the modern Geodynamic Observatory. It comprises also the new installation of borehole-tilt meters in front of the observatory building and laser-strain meters in the gallery. The question arises how non-tidal signals are displayed in the measured time series. The investigation of such signals which can be caused naturally or man-made, can result in different sensitivities for the various tilt- and strainmeter systems, e.g. regarding barometric pressure impacts and hydrological induced pore pressure effects.

Near-field launching and mapping unidirectional surface plasmon polaritons using an automated dual-tip scanning near-field optical microscope

The spatial distribution of electromagnetic fields emitted from the aperture tip of a scanning near-field optical microscope(SNOM), which is called the emission pattern, depends on the geometry of the apex and the material composition of the tip’s coating. In previous works, experimental measurements of the emission pattern from the aperture tip were performed mostly in the far field. Moreover, the corresponding theoretical models were also developed based on these far-field measurements. Here, we have used the automated dual-tip SNOM to systematically characterize the emission from the aperture tip in the near field. In this regard, we have considered three different pairs of excitation and detection tips with distinct geometries. The emission patterns of the excitation tips were mapped using detection tips. Unidirectional surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs) at the surface of a gold platelet were launched by an excitation tip and measured in the near field by the detection tip. The experimental results were numerically reproduced by means of the Bethe–Bouwkamp model. This work puts into evidence the applicability of the automated dual-tip SNOM as the only available characterization technique to measure the emission from aperture tips in the near field. The reported asymmetric SPP radiation patterns can find applications in photonic integrated circuits or in biological and chemical sensing.

Cell orientation of swimming bacteria:From theoretical simulation to experimental evaluation

The motion of small bacteria consists of two phases:relatively long runs alternate with intermittent stops,back-ups,or tumbles,depending on the *** polar monotrichous bacteria,the flagellum is anchored at the cell pole inherited from the parent generation(old pole) and is surrounded by a chemoreceptor *** forward swimming,the leading pole is always the pole recently formed in cell division(new pole).The flagella of the peritrichous bacterium Escherichia coli often form a bundle behind the old *** cell orientation and receptor positioning during runs generally mimic that of monotrichous *** encountering a solid surface,peritrichous bacteria exhibit a circular motion with the leading pole dipping *** polar monotrichous bacteria also perform circular motion near solid boundaries,but during *** this case,the leading pole points *** little is known about behavior near milieu-air *** simulations have revealed some of the mechanisms underlying these phenomena,but leave many questions *** biophysics with molecular techniques will certainly advance our understanding of bacterial locomotion.
