Aims and Methods The relationship between genetic diversity and species diversity and the underlying mechanisms are of both fundamental and applied *** used amplified fragment length polymorphism(AFLP)and vegetation records to investigate the association between genetic diversity of Plantago lanceolata and plant species diversity using 15 grassland communities in central *** used correlation and partial correlation analyses to examine whether relationships between genetic and species diversity were direct or mediated by environmental differences between *** Findings Both within-and between-population genetic diversity of *** were significantly positively correlated with plant species diversity within and between *** and partial correlations revealed that the positive correlations indirectly resulted from the effects of abiotic habitat characteristics on plant species diversity and,via abundance,on genetic diversity of ***,they did not reflect a direct causal relationship between plant species diversity and genetic diversity of ***,as would have been expected based on the hypothesis of a positive relationship between plant species diversity and niche diversity.

Ultrafast supercontinuum generation in gas-filled waveguides is an enabling technology for many intriguing applications ranging from attosecond metrology towards biophotonics,with the amount of spectral broadening crucially depending on the pulse dispersion of the propagating *** this study,we show that structural resonances in a gas-filled antiresonant hollow core optical fiber provide an additional degree of freedom in dispersion engineering,which enables the generation of more than three octaves of broadband light that ranges from deep UV wavelengths to near *** observation relies on the introduction of a geometric-induced resonance in the spectral vicinity of the ultrafast pump laser,outperforming gas dispersion and yielding a unique dispersion profile independent of core size,which is highly relevant for scaling input *** a krypton-filled fiber,we observe spectral broadening from 200 nm to 1.7μm at an output energy of B 23μJ within a single optical mode across the entire spectral *** show that the frequency generation results from an accelerated fission process of solitonlike waveforms in a non-adiabatic dispersion regime associated with the emission of multiple phase-matched Cherenkov radiations on both sides of the *** effect,along with the dispersion tuning and scaling capabilities of the fiber geometry,enables coherent ultra-broadband and high-energy sources,which range from the UV to the mid‐infrared spectral range.

Background:Acute-onset neurodegenerative diseases in older patients are rare clinical cases,especially when the degeneration only affects specific regions of the nervous *** neurological disorders have been described in which the degeneration of brain parenchyma originates from and/or primarily affects the brain *** diagnosis in these patients,however,is often complicated due to a poor understanding of these diseases and their underlying *** presentation:In this manuscript we report on a 73-year-old female who had experienced a sudden onset of complex neurological symptoms that progressively worsened over a period of 2 *** evaluation had suggested a MRI-negative stroke as underlying *** combination of patient’s medical history,clinical examination and exceptional pattern of brain stem degeneration presenting as“kissing swan sign”in MR imaging was strongly suggestive of acute onset of Alexander’s *** leukoencephalopathy is caused by GFAP(glial fibrilary acidic protein)gene mutations and may present with brain stem atrophy and stroke-like onset of symptoms in elderly ***,a pathognomonic GFAP gene mutation could not be identified by Sanger ***:After an extended differential diagnosis and exclusion of other diseases,a definite diagnosis of the patient’s condition presently remains ***,whole-exome sequencing performed from patient’s blood revealed 12 potentially disease-causative heterozygous variants,amongst which several have been associated with neurological disorders in vitro and in vivo–in particular the axon degeneration-related NMNAT2 gene.

Throughout their life, plants are challenged by various abiotic and biotic stress factors. Among those are attacks from herbivorous insects. The molecular mechanisms underlying the detection of herbivores and the subsequent signal transduction are not well understood. As a second messenger, fluxes in intracellular Ca2＋ levels play a key role in mediating stress response pathways. Ca2＋ signals are decoded by Ca2＋ sensor proteins such as calmodulin-like proteins （CMLs）. Here, we demonstrate that recombinant CML37 behaves like a Ca2＋ sensor in vitro and, in Arabidopsis, AtCML37 is induced by mechanical wounding as well as by infestation with larvae of the generalist lepidopteran herbivore Spodoptera littoralis. Loss of function of CML37 led to a better feeding performance of larvae suggesting that CML37 is a positive defense regulator. No herbivory-induced changes in secondary metabolites such as glucosinolates or flavonoids were detected in cml37 plants, although a significant reduction in the accumulation of jasmonates was observed, due to reduced expression of JAR1 mRNA and cellular enzyme activity. Consequently, the expression of jasmonate-responsive genes was reduced as well. Summarizing, our results suggest that the Ca2＋ sensor protein, CML37, functions as a positive regulator in Ca2＋ signaling during herbivory, connecting Ca2＋ and jasmonate signaling.

The genus Eois comprises an important part of megadiverse assemblages of geometrid moths in mountain rainforests of southern Ecuador. In this study we report：（i） on the construction of a DNA barcode library of Eois for identification purposes; and （ii） the exploration of species diversity through species delimitation by pair-wise distance thresholds. COl barcode sequences were generated from 408 individuals （at least 105 species） collected on a narrow geographic scale （-40 km2） in the Reserva Bioldgica San Francisco. Analyses of barcode sequence divergence showed that species delimitations based solely on external morphology result in broad overlap of intra- and interspecific distances. Species delimitation at a 2% pair-wise distance threshold reveals a clear barcoding gap. Fifty-two previously unrecognized species were identified, 31 of which could only be distinguished by an integrative taxonomy approach. Twelve additional putative species could only be recognized by threshold-based delimitation. Most splits resulted in two or three newly perceived cryptic taxa. The present study increased the number of Eois species recorded from that small area of Andean mountain forest from 102 to 154 （morphology- plus integrative taxonomy-based） or even 166 （sequence-based）, leaving the species accumulation curve still far from reaching an asymptote. Notably, in no case did two or more previously distinguished morphospecies have to be lumped. This barcode inventory can be used to match larvae to known adult samples without rearing, and will therefore be of vital help to extend the currently limited knowledge about food plant relationships and host specialization.

We study unboundedness of smoothness Morrey spaces on bounded domains ? ? R^n in terms of growth envelopes. It turns out that in this situation the growth envelope function is finite—in contrast to the results obtained by Haroske et al.(2016) for corresponding spaces defined on R^n. A similar effect was already observed by Haroske et al.(2017), where classical Morrey spaces M_(u,p)(?) were investigated. We deal with all cases where the concept is reasonable and also include the tricky limiting cases. Our results can be reformulated in terms of optimal embeddings into the scale of Lorentz spaces L_(p,q)(?).

The immobilization of biomaterials on a carrier is the first step for many different applications in life science and medicine. The usage of surface-near electrostatic forces is one possible approach to guide the charged biomaterials to a specific location on the carrier. In this study, we investigate the effect of intrinsic defects on the surface potential of silicon carriers in the dark and under illumination by means of Kelvin probe force microscopy. The intrinsic defects were introduced into the carrier by local, stripe-patterned ion implantation of silicon ions with a fluence of 3 × 1013 Si ions/cm2 and 3 × 1015 Si ions/cm2 into a p-type silicon wafer with a dopant concentration of 9 × 1015 B/cm3. The patterned implantation allows a direct comparison between the surface potential of the silicon host against the surface potential of implanted stripes. The depth of the implanted silicon ions in the target and the concentration of displaced silicon atoms was simulated using the Stopping and Range of Ions in Matter (SRIM) software. The low fluence implantation shows a negligible effect on the measured Kelvin bias in the dark, whereas the large fluence implantation leads to an increased Kelvin bias, i.e. to a smaller surface work function according to the contact potential difference model. Illumination causes a reduced surface band bending and surface potential in the non-implanted regions. The change of the Kelvin bias in the implanted regions under illumination provides insight into the mobility and lifetime of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. Finally, the effect of annealing on the intrinsic defect density is discussed and compared with atomic force microscopy measurements on the 2nd harmonic. In addition, by using the Baumgart, Helm, Schmidt interpretation of the measured Kelvin bias, the dopant concentration after implantation is estimated.

Antibacterial Zinc Oxide Nanoparticle Coating of Polyester Fabrics

Polyester knitted fabrics have been equipped with antibacterial properties by coating with aqueous suspensions of zinc oxide (ZnO) with different particle diameters. It can be shown that the antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumonia and the permanence of the coating after defined washing cycles depends on the composition of the ZnO dispersion. To improve the wettability of the textile, the combustion chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) is used to generate a hydrophilic nano layer of a hydroxyl terminated silicon network on the surface of the textiles. The comparison of CCVD-treated and untreated polyester samples does not show differences in the antibacterial activity. The influence of the coating in terms of amount and particle size of ZnO on the viability and proliferation of 3T3 mouse fibroblast cells is examined. A particle content of a maximum of 20 μg ZnO/cm2 is found to be cytocompatible for coating of textiles.
