Thiram is a dithiocarbamate compound widely used for industrial processes and agriculture. Animal studies reveal that this compound may afftct the male reproductive system. Aim of this study was to test, using sensitive testicular parameters, whether thiram directly affects germinal cells. For this purpose, B6C3F1 mice were intraperitoneally injected with thiram in oil (single dose:75 mg/kg; repeated five daily doses: 25 mg/kg).Although both treatments were toxic, none of the parameters examined, i.e., testis weighi, spermatid head number,specific enzyme levels at different times after treatment (14, 28, 35, 56 days) showed significant variations from the controls, On the contrary, in the positive controls (treated with chlorambucil), a marked reduction of sperm head number as well as a deerease of lactate dehydrogenasex and sorbitol dehydrogenase activity letels were evidenced at day 28, with a tendency to recover at day 35. Under these conditions thiram did not cause cytotoxicity on differentiating spermatogonia and on late spermatocyte stages of mice gonads

Carvedilol is a chiral drug with potent antihypertensive and antianginal activities. Although it is clinically used as a racemic mixture, its enantiomers show different pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles. Here, the direct chiral separation of racemic drug by high performance liquid chromatography using two immobilized-type amylose-based chiral stationary phases is presented. Some chromatographic parameters, such as retention and selectivity, were determined under multimodal eluent conditions and different temperatures. A temperature-dependent inversion of the elution order of enantiomers was observed in the operative temperature range of chiral chromatographic support. Finally, an effective direct enantioselective method was successfully applied to the separation of the enantiomers of carvedilol on a semipreparative scale.

Recent reports have demonstrated that the new commercially available immobilized-type chiral stationary phases（CSPs） containing amylose tris（3-chloro-5-methylphenylcarbamate）（ACMPC） as a selector exhibit not only an exceptionally high enantioselectivity in high-performance liquid chromatography（HPLC） but they are also applicable to a wide range of chiral analytes. Herein, we report the results obtained in the HPLC analysis of omeprazole and its impurities B and E on the ACMPC-based Chiralpak IG-3 CSP（CSP） under polar organic conditions. A systematic evaluation of the retention characteristics of the selected benzimidazole chiral probes was carried out by changing the composition of the mobile phase and the column temperature. It is worth emphasizing that the high affinity of both enantiomers of all analytes recorded in pure methanol mode dramatically decreased incorporating small volumes of either basic or acid additives in the mobile phase. Unspecified sites of the IG-3 CSP presumably involved in strong and non-stereoselective H-bonding contacts with chiral analytes are assumed responsible for the unproductive retention process.

A simple analytical high-performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） method was applied for the en- antiomeric excess determination of esomeprazole （（S）-OME）, the enantiopure active ingredient con- tained in drug products, in the presence of its potential organic impurities A-E. The enantioselective separation was accomplished on the immobilized-type Chiralpak ID-3 chiral stationary phase （CSP） under reversed-phase conditions. The results were evaluated and compared with those obtained by the official enantioselective method of European Pharmacopoeia used as the reference for checking the enantiomeric excess of （S）-OME. It has been established that the use of the Chiralpak ID-3 CSP allows the determination of the enantiomeric purity of （S）-OME without any interference coming from its chiral and achiral related substances. The analytical procedure of the drug regulatory agencies based on the AGP CSP suffered instead from poor specificity due to overlap of the peaks pertinent to the achiral impurity A and the chiral impurity （R）-OME （impurity F）.

Levels of organochlorinated, organophosphate, dithiocarbamic, benzimidazolic, and phthalimidic compounds, as well as some other pesticide residues obtained from Regional Laboratories in the years 1983-1985, were assembled and presented as a part of a study aimed at evaluating food contamination. Approximately 2000 samples of vegetables, fruits, cereals, and food of animal origin were analyzed by local laboratories during the years 1983, 1984, and 1985. Samples were randomly obtained from the market, at production levels, or sometimes at custom sites. Approximately 10,000 determinations of single compounds or classes of compounds were carried out. The analytical results are presented and compared with the Italian maximum residue limits. In the majority of the samples analyzed, either there were no residues or the residues were below the permitted level for the specific pesticide in each commodity. High levels of residues were present in a few cases, mainly with respect to some fungicides in fruits and vegetables and chlorinated compounds in some animal products. (c)1989 Academic Press, Inc.

Results of analytical surveys on pesticide residue levels in foods for the years 1986-1987 are presented. Analytical data obtained from regional laboratories are tabulated in terms of various commodity groups (vegetables, fruit, cereals, processed or derived foodstuffs, other commodities, legumes, environmental samples, others) and are compared with maximum legal tolerances established by the ministerial ordinance (Italian Ministry of Health) 6.6. 1985.On a total number of 4715 determinations of classes of compounds or of single compounds made on 1601 commodities samples, only N 53 (1.1 %) violative results appeared. No residue was found at levels exceeding regulatory limits or found in commodities where a tolerance had not been established for a specific pesticide/commodity combination.

The paper reports the monitoring for pesticide residue contamination of foodstuffs carried out in the years 1988-1989 by the Italian peripheral laboratories officially commissioned for the task. The tables show the analytical data for each class of substrate versus the limits in force at the time. 2506 food samples and 555 samples from the environment were analysed and a total of 16259 determinations made.The residues were absent in 90% of the cases; the percentage of irregularities was 1.52%. These results confirm the data obtained in previous years, which is particularly significant considering the much larger number of analytical determinations performed this time.It has been deemed convenient to survey specific types of foodstuffs (for example, cereals and animal products) by examining a larger number of samples.
