本文旨在探讨气候变化如何影响两种特有墨西哥木兰的导管性状可塑性和其每年的年轮宽度。尽管如此,很少有研究评估干旱对墨西哥东部热带山地云林导管性状的影响。通过生长年轮的数字图像,我们对所研究的墨西哥木兰树种的径向生长率、树龄和导管性状可塑性进行了评估,比较了两种墨西哥木兰树种在干旱年和非干旱年的导管密度、水力直径和传导面积百分比。本研究首次对墨西哥两个热带山地云林中的两个濒危木兰树种(Magnolia vovidesii和M.schiedeana)的多孔木质部导管性状对长期气候变化的可塑性进行了分析。结果发现,当比较干旱和非干旱年份时,温度和降水量与年轮宽度的差异密切相关。扩散型多孔木质导管解剖结构具有很高的可塑性,这与所研究的两种木兰树种的温度和/或水的有效性有关。我们的结论是,与非干旱年份相比,对干旱年份的解剖学适应导致了导管性状的大量减少;这些可塑的适应性在植物长期环境胁迫下的水分运输以及生存的安全性方面起着重要的作用。

This study scrutinized the possibility of finding toxicant or deterrent plant metabolites against the dry wood termite Incisitermes marginipennis(Latreille).Plant deterrent agents act as repellents or antifeedants to prevent wood decay and increase its useful life.The potential of the tree Caesalpinia coriaria(Fabaceae)as a biological source of molecules with deterrent effects against the dry wood termite was assessed by a phytochemical fractionation guided by repellence and antifeedant activities.The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of the leaf essential oil showed geraniol to be one of the major components and its repellent and antifeedant effects were determined.Geraniol had only an antifeedant effect without affecting the body weight or survival of the dry wood termite.Unlike the leaf essential oil,geraniol did not exhibit a repellency effect.An in-silico approach of the activity of acetylcholinesterase in interaction with geraniol resulted in an affinity energy of−7.5 Kcal/mol.Geraniol interacted with the amino acid tyrosine 324 located in the enzyme’s active site while citronellol(negative control)interacted with tryptophan 83 located adjacent to the active site.These deterring terpenes have not been implemented for the preservation and restoration of wood products exposed to the attack of the dry wood termite.However,they are an important natural control alternative.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficiency of the encapsulation-dehydration technique for cryopreservation of Cyrtopodium hastchbachii Pabst seeds.Immature seeds of this species were cryopreserved by an encapsulation-dehydration technique.Seeds of five immature pods,120 days after pollination,were encapsulated in 3%calcium alginate matrix and pretreated in liquid medium supplemented with 0.08 M sucrose(24 h),0.15 M sucrose(24 h),0.25 M sucrose(48 h),0.5 M sucrose(24 h)and 0.75 M sucrose(24 h)in shaker at 60 rpm.Alginate beads were dehydrated 5 h in silicagel and immersed in liquid nitrogen for 12 h.Cryopreserved beads were thawed at 30℃ for 1 min,rehydrated using the same liquid mediums[0.75 M sucrose(24 h),0.5 M sucrose(24 h),0.25 M sucrose(48 h)and 0.15 M sucrose(24 h)]and cultivated in half strength Murashige&Skoog medium(1962)with the addition of 2 g/L activated charcoal.Sixty four percent of seeds survived and developed into acclimatized plants after being cryopreserved.In this work,the encapsulation-dehydration technique was employed for first time in Cyrtopodium hatschbachii.

Reproductive systems are fundamental attributes for understanding life cycle and regeneration processes and provide information about seed production and genetic diversity. Analyses of reproductive strategies within communities and their associations with functional groups can indicate how physical and biological characteristics may influence the reproductive ecology of such communities. The main goal was to determine if the reproductive systems and their associated functional groups have particular characteristics related to extreme conditions and disturbance within xerophytic shrubland. Floral morphology analysis and four experimental tests were conducted to determine the reproductive systems of species and their associations with the life form, succulence, carbon metabolism, dispersal syndrome, pollination, and disturbance. Of the 144 plant species studied, 72.9% were hermaphrodite, 22.9% were monoecious, and 4.2% were dioecious. Dioecy was associated with woodiness, frugivory and undisturbed areas, while monoecy was more common in herbs. Adichogamy, protandry and herkogamy were more frequent than dichogamy, protogyny and no herkogamy, respectively. Xenogamous species tend to be woody and grow in undisturbed areas, while partially xenogamous species were mainly herbs occurring in disturbed areas. The majority of species were partially self-incompatible. High levels of outbreeding strategies tended to occur mainly in woody K-strategy species from undisturbed areas, mixed breeding strategies occurred in disturbed areas and overall community, and inbreeding strategies were associated with mostly herbaceous r-strategy primarily in disturbed areas.

Firmness is one of the most important fruit quality traits in strawberries.The postharvest shelf life of this soft fruit is highly limited by the loss of firmness,where cell wall disassembly plays an important role.Previous studies demonstrated that the polygalacturonase FaPG1 has a key role in remodelling pectins during strawberry softening.In this study,FaPG1 knockout strawberry plants have been generated using the CRISPR/Cas9 system delivered via Agrobacterium tumefaciens.Ten independent lines,cv.“Chandler”,were obtained,and all of them were successfully edited as determined by PCR amplification and T7 endonuclease assay.The targeted mutagenesis insertion and deletion rates were analyzed using targeted deep sequencing.The percentage of edited sequences varied from 47%up to almost 100%,being higher than 95%for seven of the selected lines.Phenotypic analyses showed that 7 out of the eight lines analyzed produced fruits significantly firmer than the control,ranging from 33 to 70%increase in firmness.There was a positive relationship between the degree of FaPG1 editing and the rise in fruit firmness.Minor changes were observed in other fruit quality traits,such as colour,soluble solids,titratable acidity or anthocyanin content.Edited fruits showed a reduced softening rate during postharvest,displayed a reduced transpirational water loss,and were less damaged by botrytis cinerea inoculation.The analysis of four potential off-target sites revealed no mutation events.In conclusion,editing the FaPG1 gene using the CRISPR/Cas9 system is an efficient method for improving strawberry fruit firmness and shelf life.

Aims South American Pampa grasslands are habitats of great conservation interest,with a distinct and rich flora,but have been intensely con-verted to other land uses,including tree plantations.While neces-sity for restoration grows,no information on restoration potential of grasslands after afforestation exists.Here,we aim at analyzing composition and structure of grassland vegetation with a history of eucalyptus plantations in order to assess recovery potential of these areas.We hypothesized that areas with history of eucalyptus would differ from reference grasslands with no history of land-use change in terms of floristic and functional composition and would present lower species richness.Methods Our study region comprised four sites in the southeastern part of the Pampa biome,in the coastal plain in the extreme south of Brazil,always with sites with long(50 years)history of eucalyptus plantation and reference grassland.We sampled vegetation at post-eucalyptus sites(with and without resprouting)10 years after clear-clutting and in natural grasslands.We analyzed data by analysis of variance and ordination techniques,considering compositional parameters and life forms,and indicator species analysis.Important Findings Species richness and vegetation cover were higher in reference grassland than in resprout areas but did not differ from post-eucalyp-tus areas.Exotic species cover was significantly higher in areas with afforestation history.In terms of total composition,natural grasslands differed significantly from areas with past plantation use.Indicator species analyses revealed considerable differences between grass-land types.In conclusion,vegetation development led to grassland communities that are still quite distinct from reference sites.Likely,the specificity of grassland management has a high importance in defining vegetation trajectories in time and importance for grassland recovery,and restoration needs to be addressed in more studies.

Background:Predicting how natural and anthropogenic drivers shape different ecological indicators,such as plant populations along environmental gradients,can be a relevant tool for establishing management and conservation criteria of tropical wetlands.We aimed to assess the effects of seasonal flood disturbance,type of grasslands and topographical conditions on Croton trinitatis population distribution in a tropical wetland.Methods:The study was carried out in a seasonally flooded grassland(Central-West Brazil).We conducted samplings of soil on the dry and flood hydrophases of the Pantanal.We took the samples in eight seasonal ponds,with 1 km interval between them.Transects were marked during the flood period,observing the water level,one in the lowest zone,in the middle of the pond=low(ca.60 cm deep),one at the pond edge=mid(ca.30 cm deep)and one in the higher zone,on the external part=high(ca.1 cm deep).Results:The results showed that the topography,seasonality,and types of grassland determine differences in the abundance patterns of adult plants and seedlings,and seed bank and seed predation.The abiotic factors can shape plant population-related ecological processes and patterns,with outputs(germination and predation)and inputs(local dispersion and from neighbouring areas)of proportional seeds for the population maintenance in this environment.Conclusion:We emphasize the importance of these findings,to show that abiotic factors are not the only ones to be considered in ecological studies of distribution and structuring of populations in habitats with extreme seasonal events.

Gibberellins(GAs)play important roles in multiple developmental processes and in plant response to the environment.Within the GA pathway,a central regulatory step relies on GA-dependent degradation of the deLLA transcriptional regulators.Nevertheless,the relevance of the stability of other key proteins in this pathway,such as SLY1 and SNE(the F-box proteins involved in deLLA degradation),remains unknown.Here,we take advantage of mutants in the HSP70-HSP90 organizing protein(HOP)co-chaperones and reveal that these proteins contribute to the accumulation of SNE in Arabidopsis.Indeed,HOP proteins,along with HSP90 and HSP70,interact in vivo with SNE,and SNE accumulation is significantly reduced in the hop mutants.Concomitantly,greater accumulation of the deLLA protein RGA is observed in these plants.In agreement with these molecular phenotypes,hop mutants show a hypersensitive response to the GA inhibitor paclobutrazol and display a partial response to the ectopic addition of GA when GA-regulated processes are assayed.These mutants also display different phenotypes associated with alterations in the GA pathway,such as reduced germination rate,delayed bolting,and reduced hypocotyl elongation in response to warm temperatures.Remarkably,ectopic overexpression of SNE reverts the delay in germination and the thermally dependent hypocotyl elongation defect of the hop1 hop2 hop3 mutant,revealing that SNE accumulation is the key aspect of the hop mutant phenotypes.Together,these data reveal a pivotal role for HOP in SNE accumulation and GA signaling.

Yersinia enterocolitica is a very common food-borne pathogen which causes gastrointestinal infections (yersiniosis) in humans and a wide array of animals (e.***.cattle,deer,pigs,and birds).Due to the increasing interest in innovative plant-based substances as common food preservatives,several essential oils and herbal extracts have been investigated deeply that resulted in the emergence of novel anti-Yersinia additives.We reviewed relevant work done by 53 researchers covering literature from the year 2002 to till date.Some species such as Origanum vulgare ,Rosmarinus officinalis ,Thymus vulgaris ,Ocimum basilicum have been extensively investigated and identified that 1,8-cineole,linalool and γ-terpinene as compounds found in the essential oils of these plants have anti-Yersinia activity active food packaging agents.In the same direction,some promising results have been mentioned about the herbal extracts of Murrya koenigii ,Tanacetum vulgare and Tanacetum balsamita,but further investigations are needed for their sustainable implications.According to hierarchical cluster analysis,we found that Lamiaceae and Lauracea as the most significant families with anti-Yersinia activity.Towards the end,we proposed new research trends in order to enhance a global knowledge about the use of natural products against Y.enterocolitica .

Aims We analyse here the variations in species composition and richness and the geographic ranges of the tree species occurring in south american subtropical atlantic and Pampean forests.our goals were to assess(i)the floristic consistency of usual classifications based on vegetation physiognomy,climate and elevation;(ii)the leading role of temperature-related variables on the variations in species composition and richness;(iii)the predominance of species with tropical-subtropical ranges,possibly as a result of forest expansion over grasslands after the last glacial maximum(LGM);(iv)the restriction of most subtropical endemics to stressful habitats as a possible result of past forest refuges during the LGM.Methods The region was defined by the Tropic of Capricorn to the north,the rio de la Plata to the south,the atlantic shoreline to the east and the catchment areas of the upper Paranáand uruguay rivers to the west.multivariate analyses,multiple regression modelling and variance partition analyses were performed on a database containing 63994 occurrence records of 1555 tree species in 491 forest sites and 48 environmental variables.all species were also classified according to their known geographic range.Important Findingsa main differentiation in species composition and richness was observed between the eastern windward coastlands(rain and cloud forests)and western leeward hinterlands(Araucaria and semi-decid-uous forests).Pre-defined forest types on both sides were consistent with variations in tree species composition,which were significantly related to both environmental variables and spatial proximity,with extremes of low temperature playing a chief role.Tree species rich-ness declined substantially towards the south and also from rain to seasonal forests and towards the highland summits and sandy shores.species richness was significantly correlated with both minimum temperature and actual evapotranspiration.about 91%of the subtropical flora is shared with the much richer tropical flora,prob-ably extracting
