Technical and Economic Feasibility of Using Hydrogen as Energy Storage System in Wind Farms

In this paper some of the results obtained in the research project "A Technical and Economic feasibility study of hydrogen production from solar and wind energy in the Istmo de Tehuantepec" are presented. The purpose of this study is to assess the viability of electrolytic hydrogen production in wind farms in the Istmo de Tehuantepec. Different configurations of hydrogen storage systems were simulated in local weather conditions and using local power grids. WAsP 9.1 (under license obtained by the Universidad del Istmo) and HoMER were used in this study. Using WAsP it was estimated that the annual energy produced by five BoNUS 1MW/54 turbines is 18.70 GWh/year with an average capacity factor of 42.7%; efficient operation is projected for a wind farm with greater capacity. The HoMER simulation of a 500 MW wind farm in a 225 MW power grid, showed that 42% of the energy generated by the turbines is not integrated into the power grid and consequently it is used for electrolytic hydrogen production, with an annual production of 15,522 Ton at a cost of 11.60 USD/kg, for capital multipliers of 1 and 1.6 for the electrolyzer and the wind turbine respectively. It was established that by lowering the capital costs of both the electrolyzer and the wind turbine, it is possible to produce hydrogen at a cost of between 5.70 and 6.40 USD/kg, which is comparable to the current costs of conventional methods of hydrogen production. Favorable results were also obtained when a fuel cell was added to the system to introduce energy into the power grid at peak times, even when the selling price to the grid is less than 0.30 USD/kWh. In conclusion, given the current trend of rising fossil fuel prices as well as the existing and prospective technological advances in the production and storage of hydrogen, the electrolytic production of this fuel is feasible under the conditions found in the Istmo de Tehuantepec.

To evaluate efficacy, adverse effects, and user continuation rate of an etonogestrel subdermal single-rod contraceptive implant. Methods: A total of 417 healthy volunteers of childbearing age were included in this multicenter trial. After implant insertion, the women were followed up during the 3 years of contraceptive action. At each visit, clinical findings, side effects, and bleeding patterns were recorded. Efficacy and continuation rates were analyzed using the Pearl Index and Kaplan-Meier life tables, respectively. Results: The observation period totaled 958.5 woman-years (27.5 months per woman). The Pearl Index score was 0. Side effects were reported by 44.4% of users, but the proportion had decreased to 16.5% by the end of the study. The continuation rate was 61.4% . The most common reason for early discontinuation (in 21.1% of the participants) was menstrual disturbances. Conclusions: Etonogestrel subdermal contraceptive implants demonstrated high efficacy and an acceptable continuation rate. Counseling potential users explicitly about the side effects will optimize patient success with this long-acting contraceptive.

The effects of contemporary climate,habitat heterogeneity and long-term climate change on species richness are well studied for woody plants in forest ecosystems,but poorly understood for herbaceous plants,especially in alpine–arctic ***,we aim to test if the previously proposed hypothesis based on the richness–environment relationship could explain the variation in richness patterns of the typical alpine–arctic herbaceous genus *** a newly compiled distribution database of 437 Saxifraga species,we estimated the species richness patterns for all species,narrow-and wide-ranged *** used generalized linear models and simultaneous autoregressive models to evaluate the effects of contemporary climate,habitat heterogeneity and historical climate on species richness *** regressions were used to determine the independent and shared effects of different *** widely used models were tested to identify their predictive power in explaining patterns of species *** found that temperature was negatively correlated with the richness patterns of all and wide-ranged species,and that was the most important environmental factor,indicating a strong conservatism of its ancestral temperate *** heterogeneity and long-term climate change were the best predictors of the spatial variation of narrow-ranged species ***,the combined model containing five predictors can explain ca.40%–50%of the variation in species *** further argued that additional evolutionary and biogeographical processes might have also played an essential role in shaping the Saxifraga diversity patterns and should be considered in future studies.

The Program of Cocinas Comunitarias in the state of oaxaca,Mexico benefits children aged 6 to 12 who attend primary education schools in low-income *** is hoped that this food assistance program will allow children to learn better and develop learning *** this way,a significant reduction in the grade failure rates and dropout rates is expected,which will be reflected in a higher graduation efficiency *** fact,the contribution of this work consists of a methodology for the analysis of the impact of the food subsidy on the academic performance of low-income primary education *** this sense,a multivariate model was constructed to analyze the interrelationships between grade failure,dropout,graduation efficiency rates,food subsidy,and the socio-demographic characteristics of the population that attends primary *** Mexican government expects from this program that the more low-income children complete primary education,the more likely that a higher number of adolescents will complete high school *** scheme is very important for the country’s half population living in poverty and especially in oaxaca State which is one of poorest states.

Iatrogenic bile duct injury with loss of confluence

AIM: To describe our experience concerning the surgical treatment of Strasberg E-4(Bismuth Ⅳ) bile duct injuries. METHoDS: In an 18-year period, among 603 patients referred to our hospital for surgical treatment of complex bile duct injuries, 53 presented involvement of the hilar confluence classified as Strasberg E4 injuries. Imagenological studies, mainly magnetic resonance imaging showed a loss of confluence. The files of these patients were analyzed and general data were recorded, including type of operation and postoperative outcome with emphasis on postoperative cholangitis, liver function test and quality of life. The mean time of follow-up was of 55.9 ± 52.9 mo(median = 38.5, minimum = 2, maximum = 181.2). All other patients with Strasberg A, B, C, D, E1, E2, E3, or E5 biliary injuries were excluded from this ***: Patients were divided in three groups: G1(n = 21): Construction of neoconfluence + Roux-en-Y hepatojejunostomy. G2(n = 26): Roux-en-Y portoenterostomy. G3(n = 6): Double(right and left) Rouxen-Y hepatojejunostomy. Cholangitis was recorded in two patients in group 1, in 14 patients in group 2, and in one patient in group 3. All of them required transhepatic instrumentation of the anastomosis and six patients needed live ***: Loss of confluence represents a surgicalchallenge. There are several treatment options at different stages. Roux-en-Y bilioenteric anastomosis(neoconfluence, double-barrel anastomosis, portoenterostomy) is the treatment of choice, and when it is technically possible, building of a neoconfluence has better outcomes. When liver cirrhosis is shown, liver transplantation is the best choice.

Neuropsychiatric disorders(NPDs) constitute a heavyburden on public health systems around the world and studies have demonstrated that the negative impact of NPDs is larger in Low and Middle Income Countries(LMICs). In recent decades, several studies have come to the understanding that genetic factors play a major role in the risk for a large number of NPDs. However, few neuropsychiatric genetics studies have been published from LMICs. In this Editorial, we discuss important issues impinging on advances in neuropsychiatric genetics research in LMICs. It is essential that scientists educate policymakers and officials of funding agencies on the importance of providing adequate funding for research in these areas. development of local well-supported research programs focused on NPD genetics should be an important asset to develop; it would facilitate the establishment of sustainable research efforts that could lead to appropriate diagnosis and specific, affordable and feasible interventions in LMICs. It is important to point out that research into the biological basis of human NPDs is not only an academic effort reserved for a few elite institutions in economically developed countries, but it is vitally important for the mental health of people around the world.

N-acetyl-L-cysteine combined with mesalamine in the treatment of ulcerative colitis: Randomized,placebo-controlled pilot study

AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of oral N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) co-administration with mesalamine in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. METHoDS: Thirty seven patients with mild to moderate UC were randomized to receive a four-wk course of oral mesalamine (2.4 g/d) plus N-acetyl-L-cysteine (0.8 g/d) (group A) or mesalamine plus placebo (group B). Patients were monitored using the Modified Truelove-Witts Severity Index (MTWSI). The primary endpoint was clinical remission (MTWSI ≤ 2) at 4 wk. Secondary endpoints were clinical response (defined as a reduction from baseline in the MTWSI of ≥ 2 points) and drug safety. The serum TNF-α, interleukin-6, interleukin-8 and MCP-1 were evaluated at baseline and at 4 wk of treatment. RESULTS: Analysis per-protocol criteria showed clinical remission rates of 63% and 50% after 4 wk treatment with mesalamine plus N-acetyl-L-cysteine (group A) and mesalamine plus placebo (group B) respectively (oR = 1.71; 95% CI: 0.46 to 6.36; P = 0.19; NNT = 7.7). Analysis of variance (ANoVA) of data indicated a significant reduction of MTWSI in group A (P = 0.046) with respect to basal condition without significant changes in the group B (P = 0.735) during treatment. Clinical responses were 66% (group A) vs 44% (group B) after 4 wk of treatment (oR = 2.5; 95% CI: 0.64 to 9.65; P = 0.11; NNT = 4.5). Clinical improvement in group A correlated with a decrease of IL-8 and MCP-1. Rates of adverse events did not differ significantly between both groups. CoNCLUSIoN: In group A (oral NAC combined with mesalamine) contrarily to group B (mesalamine alone), the clinical improvement correlates with a decrease of chemokines such as MCP-1 and IL-8. NAC addition not produced any side effects.
