Grafting of polystyrene with narrowly dispersed polymer microspheres through surface-initiated atom transferradical polymerization(ATRP)was ***(PDVB)microspheres were prepared by dispersionpolymerization with poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone)(PVP)as *** surfaces of PDVB microspheres werechloromethylated by chloromethyl methyl ether in the presence of zinc chloride as catalyst to form chloromethylbenzeneinitiating core sites for subsequent ATRP grafting of styrene using CuCl/bpy as catalytic *** was found to begrafted not only from the particle surfaces but also from within a thin shell layer,resulting in the formation of particles sizeincreased from 2.38-2.58 μm,which can further grow to 2.93 μm during secondary grafting polymerization of *** that grafting polymerization proceeds through a typical ATRP procedure with living *** of the preparedmicrospheres have narrow particle size distribution with coefficient of variation around 10%.

In a phosphate buffer, a hemoglobin (Hb)-imprinted polymer complex was prepared using maleic anhydride (MAH) modified chitosan beads as matrix, acrylamide (AM) as functional monomer, N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as cross-linker and potassiumpersulfate (KPS) / sodium hydrogen sulfite (NaHSO3) as initiators. Langmuir analysis showed that an equal class of adsorption was formed in the molecular imprinting polymer (MIP), and the MIP has high adsorption capacity and selectivity for the imprinted molecule. The MIP can be reused and the recovery was approximately 100% at low concentration.

Gypenosides, a series of dammarane-type saponins from Gynostemma pentaphyllum Makino, were hydrolyzed under 5％ H_2SO_4 catalysis to afford the title compound as a new secondary sapogenin in addition to panaxadiol and 2a-hydroxypanaxadiol. Bowl-like poly (styrene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) was synthesized by swollen seeded emulsion polymerization. The polymerization was carried out in PS seed emulsion swollen by toluene, whereby the bowl-like particles formed at last. The shape was observed by SEM. These particles became ball-like when swollen by toluene, observed by optical microscope, and the release behavior of solvent from them was examined.

Macroporous poly (vinyl acetate-co-triallyl isocyanurate) beads were prepared with suspension polymerization method. The copolymer beads were then transformed into poly (vinyl alcohol-co-triallyl isocyanurate) by ester exchange reaction. Aminocarboxylic acids were immobilized on the copolymer beads by the esterification of hydroxyl groups with diethyl-lenetriaminepentaacetic bisanhydride. The weak acid exchange capacities, specific surface areas and mean pore diameters of the resultant resin beads were measured.

Crosslinked macroporous polyacrylamide (PAM) was prepared with inverse phase suspension polymerization technique. After treatment with hydrazine, the polymer was functionalized with chloroacetic acid, trifluoroacetic acid diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DEPAA), and maleic acid, respectively, and PAM based adsorbents bearing carboxyl functional groups for low density lipoprotein (LDL) apheresis use were obtained. The blood compatibility and the adsorption properties for plasma lipoproteins of PAM based adsorbents were investigated.

A modified chitosan adsorbent was synthesized through a simple preparation procedure, and it demonstrated good adsorption performance for selective removal of low density lipoprotein in human plasma. Phase inversion technique was employed to form chitosan beads, to which epoxy groups were then introduced by reacting with ethyleneglycol diglycidylether, and tryptophan was subsequently coupled to the epoxy-activated beads.

An adsorbent with good adsorption perform-ance for binding low density lipoprotein (LDL) was synthe-sized through a simple preparation procedure. The phase-inversion technique was employed to form macropor-ous chitosan beads, which were then simultaneously acti-vated, cross-linked and connected with a long spacer arm via the reaction with ethyleneglycol diglycidylether (EGDE). Tryptophan (Trp) was subsequently coupled to the ep-oxy-activated beads. This adsorbent demonstrated satisfac-tory adsorption capacity and selectivity for LDL, and it also exhibited excellent blood compatibility. The effect of spacer arms with different length on the adsorption selectivity was investigated experimentally, and the mechanism was ana-lyzed.
