Flexible feeding patterns of copepod Centropages tenuiremis in fluctuating conditions: a possible survival strategy to cope with disturbance

Centropages tenuiremis is a species with a wide distribution range in disturbed coastal ***,due to a lack of dietary information,it remains unclear as to how they maintain such dominance in fluctuating *** this study,*** was collected from the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant both in inlet and outfall regions at 06:00,12:00 and 18:00 on April 27,2011 and their in situ diet was analyzed using a PCR protocol targeting 18S ribosomal ***-four species of prey organisms were identified totally,including Dinophyta,Baciliariophyta,Viridiplantae,Rhizaria,Apicomplexa,Chordata,Mollusca,Arthropoda and Fungi,indicating an obvious omnivorous feeding habit of *** tenuiremis obviously exhibited spatial and temporal variations in diet *** plant prey(land plants and phytoplankton)were consumed in the morning(~50%),while more animal prey(metazoans and protozoans)were ingested at midday and night(60%–70%).Furthermore,a more diverse diet was detected in the outfall region(10–11 taxa),where the temperatures were relatively higher and more fluctuating,than in the control region(5–10 taxa).This finding indicated that *** could potentially expand its food spectrum under stressful ***,*** exhibited phytoplankton preference(58.62%–67.64%)in the outfall region with a lower omnivory index(0.27–0.35)than in the control region(0.51–0.95).However,phytoplankton density was lower than that in the control region,suggesting a possible herbivorous tendency of *** under elevated temperatures to balance the energy acquirement and feeding *** flexible food choices of *** observed here could effectively buffer environmental fluctuations and might be an important survival strategy in coastal ecosystems.

Nitrate δ^(15)N and δ^(18)O evidence for active biological transformation in the Changjiang Estuary and the adjacent East China Sea

The Changjiang Estuary has been considered as one of the most polluted estuaries in the world due to high nitrate （NO3） input, especially in spring and summer. In this study, 6~5N and t^180 of NO3, along with other chemical parameters in this area, were measured in spring to evaluate NO3 biogeochemical processes. A simple two end-members mixing model was used to examine the relative contribution of the Changjiang River Diluted Water and marine water to NO~ sources in the Changjiang Estuary and the adjacent East Chi- na Sea. The isotopic signals show that NO3 behaved relatively and conservatively in Transect F and Transect P where assimilation was weak possibly due to vertical mixing, while active assimilation and weak nitrifi- cation occurred in Transect D. Spatial difference in assimilation was indicated by the ~ 1：1 enrichment of S 15N and 6180 in the three transects, while spatial difference in nitrification was reflected by deviations of 15N and 6180 from assimilation line. Our results suggest that the input of the Changjiang River Diluted Wa- ter promoted NO3 assimilation possibly by stratifying the water column which favored the phytoplankton growth.

Highly efficient expression, purification of recombinant LTB protein and its activity against mucosal immunoadjuvant by nasal immunization

Objective To develop an efficient expression, purification system of recombinant Escherichia coli heat labile enterotoxin B subunit (rLTB) and study its activity against mucosal immunoadjuvant by nasal immunization Methods A recombinant, pMMB68 LTB was generated by cloning the LTB cDNA fragment into an expression vector (pMMB68) and transformed it into the host strain marine vibrio VSP60 The relevant target protein was identified using SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS PAGE) and Western blot Sephacryl S 100 gel filtration chromatography was carried out for purification of rLTB in engineering bacteria VSP60 BALB/c mice received hen egg lysozyme (HEL) alone or combined with rLTB by nasal administration After three times immunization, IgG and IgA antibody levels in serum or small intestine wash samples were determined using ELISA Results rLTB protein was highly expressed in VSP60 After gel filtration with Sephacryl S 100, the purity of rLTB reached 98 1%, the yield rate was about 52% After immunization, IgG and IgA antibody responses specific to HEL in system and mucosa of HEL+rLTB groups were significantly increased, compared with the HEL alone group ( P <0 001) Conclusions A set of protocols for large scale rLTB preparation has been established, which is simple, efficient and applicable The rLTB protein we prepared was proved to be a powerful mucocal adjuvant, which could greatly enhance systemic and mucosal immune responses to nasally co administered antigen

Quaternary marine transgressions in eastern China

Based on the data from 117 holes (9151 samples) and the research on ecology and palaeoecology of Foraminifera combined with that on Ostracoda, diatoms, pollen and spores, eight marine transgressions have been recognized in the great plain regions through the Quaternary sequences and two marine transgressions have been found since the Late Pleistocene in the coastal plain (bedrock coast) areas. In the North China Plain, these are in ascending order:the Bohai transgression in the Early Pleistocene, the Haixing and Huanghua transgressions in the Middle Pleistocene, the Baiyangdian and Cangzhou transgressions in the Late Pleistocene, and the Tianjin transgression in the Holocene. In the Yangtze River Delta region the Rugao and Zhoupu transgressions occurred in the Early Pleistocene, the Shanghai, Jiading, and Wangdian transgressions in the Middle Pleistocene, the Jiangyin and Ge Hu transgressions in the Late Pleistocene, and the Zhenjiang transgression in the Holocene. In the coastal plain (bedrock coast) areas of North China, the Cangzhou transgression was recorded in the Late Pleistocene and the Tianjin transgression in the Holocene, whereas in South China the Fuzhou transgression took place in the Late Pleistocene and the Changle transgression in the Holocene. The transgressions correspond to warm periods and regressions to cold periods. The younger transgressions were not only of shorter duration, but also of larger magnitude. These findings point to the existence of four flood event strata since the Middle Pleistocene: two in the late Middle Pleistocene and another two in the Late Pleistocene.

DAMPING OF VERTICALLY EXCITED SURFACE WAVE IN WEAKLY VISCOUS FLUID

In a vertically oscillating circular cylindrical container, singular perturbation theory of two-time scale expansions is developed in weakly viscous fluids to investigate the motion of single free surface standing wave by linearizing the Navier-Stokes equation. The fluid field is divided into an outer potential flow region and an inner boundary layer region. The solutions of both two regions are obtained and a linear amplitude equation incorporating damping term and external excitation is derived. The condition to appear stable surface wave is obtained and the critical curve is determined. In addition, an analytical expression of damping coefficient is determined. Finally, the dispersion relation, which has been derived from the inviscid fluid approximation, is modified by adding linear damping. It is found that the modified results are reasonably closer to experimental results than former theory. Result shows that when forcing frequency is low, the viscosity of the fluid is prominent for the mode selection. However, when forcing frequency is high, the surface tension of the fluid is prominent.

Effect of Carbonation and Drying-Wetting Cycles on Chloride Diffusion Behavior of Coral Aggregate Seawater Concrete

Based on seawater immersion,drying-wetting cycles,carbonation and drying-wetting cycles for coral aggregate sea-water concrete(CASC)with different strength grades,the effect of carbonation and drying-wetting cycles on chloride diffusion be-havior of CASC is *** results show that the free surface chloride concentration(Cs),free chloride diffusion coefficient(Df)and time-dependent index(m)of CASC in the drying-wetting cycles is obviously higher than that in seawater *** Df and m of CASC of carbonation and drying-wetting cycles is higher than that in the drying-wetting *** increases the Df and m of CASC,which is against CASC to resist chloride *** corrosion possibility of CASC structures in different ex-posed areas is as follows:splash zone(carbonation and drying-wetting cycles)>tidal zone(drying-wetting cycles)>underwater zone(seawater immersion).Besides,the chloride diffusion rate of C65-CASC is 17.8%-63.4%higher than that of C65-ordinary aggre-gate concrete(OAC)in seawater immersion(underwater zone).Therefore,anti-corrosion measures should be adopted to improve the service life of CASC structure in the oceanic environment.

Reducing Environmental Impact of Aggregate Excavation in Small Tropic Pacific Islands

Excavating sands and gravel on land in combination with constructing reservoirs for storing fresh water is an ideal approach in atolls. Appropriate mining of gravel from the prograding gravel beach is acceptable. Digging reef rock close to the edge of the wide ocean reef flat without surface loose sediments on it or sand beach can be accepted. Excavating sand from some depths in lagoon is a scientific approach particularly important for urbanized atolls. However, selecting appropriate sites for mining sand other than at some depths in lagoon is suitable to rural islands without dense populations. These sites include up drift side of long groin on the reef flat, partly filled access channel-port, outlet of artificial channel and lagoon margin on the prograding coast.

The vertical coupling(VC)process and mechanism during the genesis of a tropical cyclone(TC)implied by the weak vertical shear of horizontal wind,one of the key factors impacting TC genesis,constitute important but unanswered fundamental scientific *** paper carried out a targeted investigation of this problem through numerical simulation and theoretical *** main conclusions are as *** if TC genesis occurs in a barotropic environment,a VC process still occurs between the trough(vortex)at the middle level and that at the lower level in the TC embryo *** mainly occurs at the tropical disturbance(TDS)*** after the VC is accomplished can the tropical depression(TD)organize further by itself and develop into the tropical storm(TS)stage or the stronger tropical typhoon(TY)stage through the WISHE(wind-induced surface heat exchange)*** the VC process,vortical hot towers(VHTs)play vertical connecting roles and are the actual practitioners of the *** the VHTs’vertical connections,the middle-and lower-troposphere trough axes move towards each other and realize the *** can produce intensive cyclonic vorticity in the lower troposphere,which is mainly contributed by the stretching *** tilting term can produce a single dipole or double dipole of vorticity,but the positive and negative vorticity pairs offset each other *** the stretching term ensures that the cyclonic rotations of the wind field in the middle and lower levels tend to be consistent,the tilting term acts to uniformly distribute the horizontal wind in the vertical direction,and both terms facilitate the VC of the wind *** the latent heat of condensation,VHTs heat the upper and middle troposphere so that the 352 K equivalent potential temperature contour penetrates vertically into the 925–300 hPa layer,realizing the VC of the temperature *** forming cloud towers,VHTs make the ambient air become moist and nearly saturated so that the

Long-range correlations in remotely sensed chlorophyll in the South China Sea

A 8-year time series of 8-day Seaviewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) data, which spans from Oct 1997 to Oct 2005, was used to study the temporal correlations and scaling behaviour of ocean chlorophyll fluctuations in the South China Sea (SCS) by means of detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). Long-range correlations in chlorophyll fluctuations were detected in almost all the SCS. The scaling exponents vary over a wide range from 0.5 to 1.14, with an average value of 0.79. High values are found in the upwelling regions, such as the northwest of Luzon and the north of Sunda Shelf. Low values occur in the southwest of Luzon, the east of Hainan Island and a majority of the southern SCS. This spatial pattern is considerably different from that of the scaling exponents of the sea surface temperature (SST) time series. It is also demonstrated that SST exhibits more persistence than chlorophyll in almost all the SCS.

Relationship between environmental factors and plankton in the Bayuquan Port, Liaodong Bay,China：a five-year study

To understand the relationship between the plankton community and environmental factor and water quality in the Bayuquan Port of Liaodong Bay, China, and investigations were carried ou during six dif ferent periods(April 2009, April 2010, October 2011, April 2012, October 2012, and Apri 2013). This area was characterized by high levels of nutrient and suspended solids(SPS) during surve periods, and eutrophication led to the occurrence of red tides in April and October 2012 and April 2013 Our analyses revealed that the plankton communities of Bayuquan Port lacked stability and were af fecte seriously by external disturbance(e.g., oceanographic engineering and river runof f). Our data indicate tha oil, dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN), SPS, and chlorophyll a(Chl- a) were key factors that regulated th phytoplankton and zooplankton communities. The partial redundancy analysis(partial RDA) suggested tha oil and SPS were the most important environmental variables af fecting the phytoplankton community i April 2010 and 2012, whereas DIN concentration played a governing role in zooplankton dynamics. Oi and Chl-a concentrations af fected signifi cantly the zooplankton community in October 2012. Therefore, th plankton communities could refl ect both dynamic changes in coastal environmental factors and the ongoin eutrophication process caused by anthropogenic activities in this area.
