Development and preservation mechanism of deep and ultra-deep carbonate reservoirs

Exploration practice has proved that deep and ultra-deep reservoirs consist of mainly matrix-porous dolomite reservoirs and fractured-vuggy karst reservoirs and still will be very important targets for future exploration, in which large oil and gas fields such as Anyue, Yuanba, Halahatang, Fuman and Shunbei have been discovered. This paper systematically summarizes three theoretical and technical achievements in studying deep and ultra-deep carbonate reservoirs in the past decade.(1) The micro-zone and multi-parameter experiment analysis technology featured by determining the “age, temperature, pressure and fluid properties” of carbonate reservoirs, together with experimental simulation of cross-tectonic-period pore formation and preservation featured by the “multi-stage, continuous, visualized and online detection technology”, providing useful tools for studying the pore formation and preservation mechanism of deep and ultra-deep carbonate rocks from the perspective of“forward” and “inversion”.(2) Deep and ultra-deep matrix-porous dolostone reservoirs are still controlled by sedimentary facies,among which reef(mound) and/or beach contribute most. The reservoir space is mainly composed of sedimentary primary pores and supergene dissolution pores and fractures, though some of reservoir spaces are formed by burial dissolution and they tend to develop and may locally concentrate following the pre-existing porous zone. In other words, burial dissolution vugs are inherited rather than newly formed. Early dolomite precipitation(or dolomitization) has a high potential to preserve early pores.(3) The development and preservation mechanism of fractured-vuggy karst limestone reservoirs in deep and ultra-deep realm was analyzed. Pene-contemporaneous dissolution and interlayer and buried-hill karstification control the development of early and late supergene fractured-vuggy reservoirs. Discovery and characterization of a new hydrothermal field at 2°N on the slow-spreading Carlsberg Ridge

A new hydrothermal field(Tianshi)was discovered on the rift valley wall through plume anomaly surveys and geological work conducted in 2012 and 2018 between 2°35′N and 2°43′N of the slow-spreading Carlsberg Ridge(CR).Here,the results of two expeditions conducted to detect and characterize the new hydrothermal field are *** and geochemical data,as well as 14 C ages of a sediment core collected near the field are presented to reveal the hydrothermal *** show that the Tianshi field is a basalt-hosted hydrothermal *** data of the sediments collected near the field indicate a strong hydrothermal contribution,and hydrothermal Fe and Cu fluxes range from 30 to 155 mg/(cm^(2)·ka)and 0.59 to 11.49 mg/(cm^(2)·ka),*** variations in the fluxes of hydrothermal Fe indicate that there have been at least three amplified hydrothermal venting events(H 1,H 2,and H 3)in the Tianshi field over the last 35.2 ka,in 28.6-35.2 ka BP,22.0-27.6 ka BP,and 1.2-11.4 ka BP,*** event H 2 was driven by an increased magmatic production associated with sea level fall during the Last Glacial Maximum,while event H 3 was promoted by tectonic activity associated with a rapid sea level *** study further verified the role of sea level change in modulating hydrothermal activity on mid-ocean ridges.

Atmospheric iron deposition in a megacity of northwest China:Solubility,speciation,and deposition fluxes

Atmospheric iron has crucial effects on biogeochemical cycles,atmospheric processing,global climate,and human *** this study,atmospheric dustfall samples were collected from six functional areas in Xi'an,China,from 2020 to *** spatiotemporal distributions and deposition fluxes of total and water-soluble(ws)Fe as well as the speciation and potential sources of ws-Fe were *** areas had the highest concentrations of total Fe and ws-Fe,which were mainly due to copious emissions of heavy metals during *** total Fe concentrations peaked in spring,primarily due to the substantial input of crustal dust,which also led to the lowest Fe solubility in this *** contrast,the highest levels of ws-Fe occurred during winter due to an increase in biomass *** the water-soluble forms,ws-Fe(II)was dominant and accounted for 74.8%of the total amount of *** dust was the main contributor to total Fe,whereas biomass burning primarily contributed to peak ws-Fe *** average total and ws-Fe deposition fluxes in Xi'an were the highest in spring and lowest in autumn,which were related to the distributions of the dustfall deposition fluxes and their Fe contents during these *** study provided a broader and comprehensive understanding of atmospheric iron deposition in Chinese urban area,which is of positive significance for understanding atmospheric chemistry and global climate change.

Since the Cenozoic,the Tibetan Plateau has experienced large-scale uplift and outgrowth due to the India-Asia ***,the mechanism and timing of these tectonic processes still remain ***,using apatite fission track dating and inverse thermal modeling,we explore the mechanism of different phases of rapid cooling for different batholiths and intrusions in the southeastern Tibetan *** contrast to previous views,we find that the coeval granitic batholith exposed in the same tectonic zone experienced differential fast uplift in different sites,indicating that the present Tibetan Plateau was the result of differential uplift rather than the entire lithosphere uplift related to lithospheric collapse during Cenozoic *** addition,we also suggest that the 5-2 Ma mantle-related magmatism should be regarded as the critical trigger for the widely coeval cooling event in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau,because it led to the increase in atmospheric CO_(2)level and a hotter upper crust than before,which are efficient for suddenly fast rock weathering and ***,we propose that the current landform of the southeastern Tibetan Plateau was the combined influences of tectonic and climate.

Age and petrogenesis of the newly discovered Early Permian granite in the Kumtor gold field， Kyrgyz Tien-Shan

Permian intrusions are widespread in the Middle and Southern Tien Shan， with fewer occurrences in the Northern Tien-Shan. Notably， many of these intrusions are spatially associated with a variety of ore deposits， indicating a significant link between magmatic activity and mineralization processes in these areas. We studied granite samples recently recovered from drilling in the Kumtor gold field to evaluate their potential relationships with gold mineralization. We report major and trace element geochemistry， zircon U-Pb age and Hf isotope data for this so-called Kumtor granite. The Kumtor granite is metaluminous to peraluminous and belongs to the high-K and calc-alkaline series with I-type geochemical characteristics. The relatively high K2O and Na2O concentrations and low high field strength elements （HFSE） and heavy rare earth elements （HREE）， the presence of biotite within these I-type granites， together with their low zircon saturation temperatures （731–779 °C）， suggest that they were likely derived from a hydrous source formed by dehydration melting of mica-bearing， medium- to high-K metabasaltic rocks. Our zircon U-Pb dating results indicate that the Kumtor granite intruded at 293 ± 1.7 Ma， which is consistent with the age range of other Middle Tien-Shan granitoids. The zircon Hf isotopic composition is εHf（t）= –7.56 to –5.05， indicating an ancient （1.39 to 1.52 Ga） crustal origin. Petrographical， geochemical and geochronological data indicate that the Kumtor granite is similar to leuco-granites of the Terekty complex. Our results indicate that the Kumtor granite was emplaced in the early Permian in a post-collision setting and may have temporal and genetic relationships with gold mineralization.

Spatial distribution characteristics and influence factor analysis of landslides——case study of the Hanwang area in Qinba Mountains

The geological hazards of landslides in Hanwang Town, Ziyang County, Ankang City, Shaanxi Province, have emerged. Yet, the current understanding of the spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors of landslides in this area remains unclear. Combining the results of remote sensing interpretation and field investigation, seven influencing factors, namely, elevation, slope direction, slope gradient, distance from rivers, distance from faults, engineering geologic lithology, and distance from roads, are selected for the study. The distribution characteristics of landslides in each influencing factor and the influence of the resolution of the Digital Elevation Model(DEM) on the results are statistically and analytically analyzed. Furthermore, two highrisk landslides within the study area were subjected to comprehensive analysis, integrating the findings from drilling and other field investigations in order to examine their deformation mechanisms. Based on this analysis,the following conclusions were derived:(1) 34 landslides in the study area, mainly small earth landslides, with a distribution density of 0.42/km~2, threatening 414 people and property of about 55.87 million Yuan.(2)The landslides in the study area easily occur in the <400 m elevation range;the landslides are developed in all slope directions, the gradient is mainly concentrated in the range of 10°–40°, the distribution density of the landslides is higher in the closer distance from the river and the faults(0–200 m), the landslide-prone strata are mainly the softer and weaker metamorphic rocks, and the landslides are mainly around roads.(3) The resolution of the DEM should be selected based on the specific conditions of the study area, the requirements of the investigation, and the scale of the landslide. Opting for an appropriate DEM resolution is advantageous for understanding the patterns of landslides and conducting risk assessments in the region.(4) The Zhengjiabian landslide is a trac

The Altai orogen is a typical intracontinental orogen in Central Asia that experienced far-field deformation associated with Indian-Eurasian plate convergence. This region is characterized by uplift comparable to that of the Tianshan Mountains but has a distinct strain rate. Half of the Indo-Asia strain is accommodated by the Tianshan Mountains, whereas the Altai Mountains accommodates only 10%. To elucidate how the Altai Mountains produced such a large amount of uplift with only one-fifth of the strain rate of the Tianshan Mountains, we constructed a detailed crustal image of the Altai Mountains based on a new 166.8-km deep seismic reflection profile. The prestack migration images reveal an antiform within the Erqis crust, an ~10 km Moho offset between the Altai arc and the East Junggar area, and a major south-dipping(30° dip) thrust in the lower crust beneath the Altai Mountains, which is connected to the Moho offset. The south-dipping thrust not only records the southward subduction of the Ob-Zaisan Ocean in the Paleozoic but also controlled the Altai deformation pattern in the Cenozoic with the Erqis antiform. The Erqis antiform prevented the extension of deformation to the Junggar crust. The southdipping thrust in the lower crust of the Altai area caused extrusion of the lower crust, generating uplift at the surface, thickening of the crust, and steep(~10 km) Moho deepening in the Altai Mountains. This process significantly widened the deformation zone of the Altai Mountains. These findings provide a new geodynamic model for describing how inherited crustal structure controls intraplate deformation without strong horizontal stress.

Effects of source facies and maturity on individual carbon isotopic compositions of oil

Carbon isotopes have been used extensively in tracing the sources of ***,primary source facies and secondary alteration controls on oil isotopic compositions have not been well resolved,resulting in application uncertainties.A case study was undertaken for an alkaline lacustrine oil system in a lower Permian formation in the Junggar Basin,NW *** indicate that increasing maturity causes the carbon isotopic composition to become heavier for only short–middle-chain compounds,whereas source facies-related carbon assimilation controls the compositions of short-,middle-,and long-chain *** particular,light-carbon assimilation during organic-matter degradation makes the isotopic composition lighter,whereas heavy carbon from the water mass makes it ***,oils in this study area were divided into Type U and Type N oils based on individual compound carbon isotopic compositions,reflecting the difference in source facies in a highly saline and reducing stratified water *** results provide a better understanding of the controls on carbon isotopes in oil in sedimentary basins,reducing the uncertainty in oil–source correlation and addressing the origin of oil.
