Detailed analysis of PCBs and PCDD/Fs impurities in a dielectric oil sample （ASKAREL Nr 1740） from an imported transformer in China

Homolog and congener profiles of polychlori- nated biphenyls （PCBs）, polychlorinated dibenzo-p- dioxins （PCDDs） and polychlorinated dibenzofurans （PCDFs） in commercial PCBs formulations are useful information for the source appointment of PCBs contam- ination as well as the risk assessment caused by potential exposure. Dielectric oil （ASKAREL Nr 1740） in an imported transformer found in China was sampled and analyzed by isotope dilution technology using high resolution gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry （HRGC/HRMS）. The detailed homolog and congener profiles of PCBs obtained were compared with those of known Aroclor formulations. High similarity in the homolog profile between the oil sample and Aroclor 1260was found, with the hexachlorinated and hepta- chlorinated biphenyls accounting for more than 80.2% of the total PCBs concentration. Severn indicator PCBs contribute about 30%, while 12 PCB congeners （i.e., # 153, #143, #168, #180, #149, #165, #138, #170, #190, #187, #174, #181） account for more than 50% of the total PCB concentrations. Total concentration ofPCDDs, PCDFs and dioxin-like PCBs （DL-PCBs） was found to be 740 ng TEQ/g, of which 620 ng TEQ/g came from DL-PCBs. The contribution of PCDDs to the total TEQ was neglectable. The concentration of PCDFs homologs follows the order of OCDF 〉 HxCDFs 〉 HpCDFs 〉 PeCDFs 〉 TeCDFs, which is in consistence with the previous study on Aroclor 1260. Three DL-PCBs congeners （i.e., #118, #156, #157） accounted for 77% of the total concentration of DL-PCBs, also they contribute 72% in the TEQ caused by DL-PCBs.

Optimization of H_2O_2 dosage in microwave-H_2O_2 process for sludge pretreatment with uniform design method

A microwave-H202 process for sludge pretreatment exhibited high efticiencies of releasing organics, nitrogen, and phosphorus, but large quantifies of H202 residues were detected. A uniform design method was thus employed in this study to further optimize H202 dosage by investigating effects of pH and H202 dosage on the amount of 1-I202 residue and releases of organics, nitrogen, and phosphorus. A regression model was established with pH and H202 dosage as the independent variables, and H202 residue and releases of organics, nitrogen, and phosphorus as the dependent variables. In the optimized microwave-H202 process, the pH value of the sludge was firstly adjusted to 11.0, then the sludge was heated to 80~C and H202 was dosed at a H202 ：mixed liquor suspended solids （MLSS） ratio of 0.2, and the sludge was finally heated to 100~C by microwave irradiation. Compared to the microwave-H202 process without optimization, the H202 dosage and the utilization rate of H202 in the optimized microwave-H202 process were reduced by 80% and greatly improved by 3.87 times, respectively, when the H202：MLSS dosage ratio was decreased from 1.0 to 0.2, resulting in nearly the same release rate of soluble chemical oxygen demand in the microwave-H202 process without optimization at H202：MLSS ratio of 0.5.

Organized Crime＇s Engagement in Democratic Politics： Strategies for Prevention and Mitigation

Criminal networks erode the legitimacy of democratic politics, affecting regions as diverse as Latin America （Briscoe, Perdomo, ＆ Uribe Burcher, 2014）, the Baltic States （Villaveces-Izquierdo ＆ Uribe Burcher, 2013）, and West Africa （Aning ＆ Edu-Afful, 2013a; 2013b）. Contemporary research on this topic describes various factors that might increase the vulnerability of political actors, institutions, and processes to organized crime （Uribe Burcher, 2017）. In addition, there is a need to identify strategies to strengthen those political actors, institutions, and processes, making them resilient against criminal influence. Drawing from extensive field research conducted in Latin America, Africa, and West Asia in 2015-2016 （Perdomo ＆ Uribe Burcher, 2016; Hunter ＆ Reitano, 2016; Briscoe ＆ Goff, 2016a; 2016b）, as well as additional desk research conducted during the same period, this paper maps a set of 28 actions that may increase these institutions＇ and actors＇ resilience to the influence of organized crime networks based on documented global experiences implementing such measures. The paper also reflects some of the findings from a pilot experience to assess the threat of nexus between organized crime in democratic politics in Peru conducted in 2015-2016, which used some of the proposed action points to build a prevention and mitigation plan.

Assessing the Threat of Nexus Between Organized Crime and Democratic Politics： Mapping the Factors

In recent years, increased attention from the media, the international community and policy makers has highlighted the destabilizing effects criminal networks have on the legitimacy of democratic politics, as well as the capacity of democratic systems to deliver basic services. Indeed, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development highlighted in 2014 how illicit financial flows drain the state from resources needed to provide basic services （OECD, 2014）. While this problem affects not only developing and fragile states, these countries are particularly affected as this phenomenon tends to exacerbate inequality （Briscoe, Perdomo ＆ Uribe Burcher, 2014）. Mapping the factors that make politics vulnerable to the influence of organized crime is a key element in the effort to implement adequate strategies to prevent and mitigate this phenomenon. This paper explores 21 threat factors identified, understood as some of the conditions that may contribute to the likelihood that political corruption linked to organized crime takes place. These threat factors underline institutional weaknesses--including those related to illicit political fmance---and organized crime activities, which create opportunities for illicit networks to penetrate democratic political systems. The paper also discusses how these institutional weaknesses interrelate to specific criminal markets and networks. The paper draws from extensive desk research in 2015, which complements previous desk and field research on the same topic carded out in 2011-2014 in the Baltic States, Latin America and West Africa.

Effect of organic matter on phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge subjected to microwave hybrid pretreatment

Microwave（MW） hybrid processes are able to disrupt the flocculent structure of complex waste activated sludge,and help promote the recovery of phosphorus as *** this study,to optimize struvite yield,（1） the characteristics of matter released in MW-hybrid treatments were compared,including MW,MW-acid,MW-alkali,MW-H2O2,and MW-H2O2- *** results showed that selective release of carbon,nitrogen,phosphorus,Ca^2＋,and Mg^2＋ achieved by sludge pretreatment using MW-hybrid ***-H2O2 is the recommended sludge pretreatment process for phosphorus recovery in the form of *** ratio of Mg^2＋：NH4^＋-N：PO4^3--P was 1.2：2.9：1 in the supernatant.（2） To clarify the effects of organic matter on struvite recovery,the composition and molecular weight distribution of organic matters were *** molecular weight COD was found to facilitate the removal rate of NH4^＋-N and PO4^3-P via crystallization,and the amorphous struvite crystals（〈1 kDa） from the filtered solutions had high ***,the present study reveals the necessity of taking into consideration the interference effect of high molecular weight organic matters during struvite crystallization from sewage sludge.

To augment the quality of our life,fully compliant personalized advanced health-care electronic system is *** of the major requirements to implement such systems is a physically flexible high-performance biocompatible energy storage(battery).However,the status-quo options do not match all of these attributes simultaneously and we also lack in an effective integration strategy to integrate them in complex architecture such as orthodontic domain in human *** we show,a physically complaint lithium-ion micro-battery(236μg)with an unprecedented volumetric energy(the ratio of energy to device geometrical size)of 200 mWh/cm^(3) after 120 cycles of continuous *** results of 90%viability test confirmed the battery’s *** also show seamless integration of the developed battery in an optoelectronic system embedded in a threedimensional printed smart dental *** foresee the resultant orthodontic system as a personalized advanced health-care application,which could serve in faster bone regeneration and enhanced enamel health-care protection and subsequently reducing the overall health-care cost.

Experimental mole fraction solubility of lamotrigine(LTG)in ternary aqueous mixtures of two ionic liquids(ILs),1-hexyl and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide,[HMIm][Br]and[OMIm][Br]were reported at several temperatures T=(293.15 to 313.15)*** van’t Hoff and(Jouyban-Acree-van’t Hoff,E-Jouyban-Acree-van’t Hoff,e-NRTL,UNIQUAC and Wilson)models were used to correlate the solubility *** comparison of the models with temperature and solvent composition dependencies shows that the Wilson model has the minimum ARD which are relatively close to those obtained from Jouyban-Acree-van’t Hoff and E-Jouyban-Acree-van’t Hoff models and maximum ARD belonged to the UNIQUAC *** order of ARDs for these models is:Wilson b Jouyban-Acree-van’t Hoff,E-Jouyban-Acree-van’t Hoff b e-NRTL b ***,the apparent thermodynamic functions,Gibbs free energy,enthalpy and entropy of dissolution and mixing were calculated based on the van’t Hoff and Gibbs free energy *** strong LTG-ILs interactions and enthalpic contribution of the dissolution process resulted from the calculated thermodynamic functions.
