The anti-inflammatory effects of exercise on autoimmune diseases:A 20-year systematic review

Background:The anti-inflammatory effect of exercise may be an underlying factor in improving several autoimmune diseases.The aim of this systematic review was to examine the evidence on the role of exercise training in mitigating inflammation in adolescents and adults with autoimmune disease.Methods:PubMed,Web of Science,and Embase databases were systematically reviewed for related studies published between January 1,2003,and August 31,2023.All randomized and non-randomized controlled trials of exercise interventions with autoimmune disease study participants that evaluated inflammation-related biomarkers were included.The quality of evidence was assessed using the Tool for the assEssment of Study qualiTy and reporting in EXercise scale and Cochrane bias risk tool.Results:A total of 14,565 records were identified.After screening the titles,abstracts,and full texts,87 were eligible for the systematic review.These studies were conducted in 25 different countries and included a total of 2779 participants(patients with autoimmune disease,in exercise or control groups).Overall,the evidence suggests that inflammation-related markers such as C-reactive protein,interleukin 6,and tumor necrosis factor a were reduced by regular exercise interventions.Regular exercise interventions combined with multiple exercise modes were associated with greater benefits.Conclusion:Regular exercise training by patients with autoimmune disease exerts an anti-inflammatory influence.This systematic review provides support for the promotion and development of clinical exercise intervention programs for patients with autoimmune disease.Most patients with autoimmune disease can safely adopt moderate exercise training protocols,but changes in inflammation biomarkers will be modest at best.Acute exercise interventions are ineffective or even modestly but transiently pro-inflammatory.

There discovery of alpine oak (Heterobalanus group, Quercus section Ilex, Fagaceae) fossils from Mount Shisha Pangma and its significance

We reported alpine oak fossil leaves ( the Heterobalanus group, Quercus section Ilex, Fagaceae) rediscovered on Mount Shisha Pangma. According to twice field investigations, the fossil site is located at the front of the No. 5 glacier tongue on the south side of the Dasuopu Glacier at an altitude of about 5800m on the north slope of Shisha Pangma Peak. These fossils are from the siltstone interlayer dominated by sandy conglomerate in the lower part of the Yebokangjiale Group. These newly discovered fossil leaves have typical characteristics of alpine oaks, including oval or oblong leaf, thick and short petiole, entire or toothed leaf margin, and 5 similar to 6 pairs of secondary veins, which is completely consistent with the leaf morphology of alpine oaks from Mount Shisha Pangma reported previously. Through morphological comparison with living and fossil species in this group, as well as quantitative analysis combined with geometric morphometry, these fossil leaves from Mount Shisha Pangma were assigned to Quercus preguajavifolia Tao. Alpine oaks may originate in southeastern margin of the Qinghai -Tibetan Plateau, then thrive locally and spread into regions nearby accompanying by the uplift of the plateau. The implication of alpine oak fossil leaves from Mount Shisha Pangma on paleoelevation needs to be further investigated due to the present wide range and the uncertainty of these fossils. The rediscovery of alpine oak fossils from Mount Shisha Pangma not only helps to clarify the specific layers bearing these fossils, but also further enriches the morphological characteristics of this fossil record and its systematic position. This discovery would provide important basis for better revealing the evolution of biodiversity and environmental changes in the middle part of the Himalaya during the Cenozoic.

Background:This study aimed to determine the effect of different carbohydrate(CHO)doses on exercise capacity in patients with McArdle disease—the paradigm of“exercise intolerance”,characterized by complete muscle glycogen unavailability—and to determine whether higher exogenous glucose levels affect metabolic responses at the McArdle muscle cell(in vitro)level.Methods:Patients with McArdle disease(n=8)and healthy controls(n=9)underwent a 12-min submaximal cycling constant-load bout followed by a maximal ramp test 15 min after ingesting a non-caloric placebo.In a randomized,double-blinded,cross-over design,patients repeated the tests after consuming either 75 g or 150 g of CHO(glucose:fructose=2:1).Cardiorespiratory,biochemical,perceptual,and electromyographic(EMG)variables were assessed.Additionally,glucose uptake and lactate appearance were studied in vitro in wild-type and McArdle mouse myotubes cultured with increasing glucose concentrations(0.35,1.00,4.50,and 10.00 g/L).Results:Compared with controls,patients showed the“classical”second-wind phenomenon(after prior disproportionate tachycardia,myalgia,and excess electromyographic activity during submaximal exercise,all plability.Some of these benefits are dose dependent.

Impact of metal polluted sewage water on soil nematode assemblages in agricultural settings of Aligarh,India

Sewage water in agriculture threatens human health and soil ecosystems through metal pollution.Nematodes show promise as bioindicators of soil health due to their abundance and position in soil food webs.Metal-polluted water decreased abundance of certain nematode groups and Sigma Maturity Index.Metal pollution positively affected nematode groups with r-selected life cycles.Sewage water has been inappropriately used in agriculture,posing possible threats to human health and the soil ecosystems by its constituent pollutants,especially heavy metals.Correct evaluation of its influences on soil biomes needs to consider the response of soil fauna.Among soil organisms,nematodes are seen as the best promising candidates for bioindicators of soil health.Here in,we collected soil samples from fresh water irrigated field from three sites(S1,S2 and S3)and sewage water irrigated distance gradient(5 m-40 m),to assess the influence of metal(Cu,Zn,Cd,Mn,Pb)polluted water on various characteristics of nematode communities.The results indicated that the heavy metals decreased the abundance of C-p3 nematodes,herbivores,and predatory nematodes as well as sigma maturity index,whereas,C-p1,C-p2,bacterivore and fungivore nematodes abundance and diversity positively responded to the metal pollution.Generally,nematode genera with r-selected life cycle were positively affected and those with K-selected life cycle were negatively affected by metal pollution.Overall nematode community has potential to be used as indicator of pollution stress in agricultural soils to check soil health and sustainability.

Deterministic compartment models(CMs)and stochastic models,including stochastic CMs and agent-based models,are widely utilized in epidemic modeling.However,the relationship between CMs and their corresponding stochastic models is not well understood.The present study aimed to address this gap by conducting a comparative study using the susceptible,exposed,infectious,and recovered(SEIR)model and its extended CMs from the coronavirus disease 2019 modeling literature.We demonstrated the equivalence of the numerical solution of CMs using the Euler scheme and their stochastic counterparts through theoretical analysis and simulations.Based on this equivalence,we proposed an efficient model calibration method that could replicate the exact solution of CMs in the corresponding stochastic models through parameter adjustment.The advancement in calibration techniques enhanced the accuracy of stochastic modeling in capturing the dynamics of epidemics.However,it should be noted that discrete-time stochastic models cannot perfectly reproduce the exact solution of continuous-time CMs.Additionally,we proposed a new stochastic compartment and agent mixed model as an alternative to agent-based models for large-scale population simulations with a limited number of agents.This model offered a balance between computational efficiency and accuracy.The results of this research contributed to the comparison and unification of deterministic CMs and stochastic models in epidemic modeling.Furthermore,the results had implications for the development of hybrid models that integrated the strengths of both frameworks.Overall,the present study has provided valuable epidemic modeling techniques and their practical applications for understanding and controlling the spread of infectious diseases.

Current research on text-conditional image generation shows parallel performance with ordinary painters but still has much room for improvement when compared to that of artist-ability paintings,which usually represent multilevel semantics by gathering features ofmultiple objects into one object.In a preliminary experiment,we confirm this and then seek the opinions of three groups of individuals with varying levels of art appreciation ability to determine the distinctions that exist between painters and artists.We then use these opinions to improve an artificial intelligence(AI)painting system from painter-level image generation toward artistic-level image generation.

AIM:To observe the effect of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells(hUCMSCs)secretions on the relevant factors in mouse retinal astrocytes,and to investigate the effect of hUCMSCs on the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor-A(VEGF-A)and to observe the therapeutic effect on the mouse model of retinopathy of prematurity(ROP).METHODS:Cultured hUCMSCs and extracted exosomes from them and then retinal astrocytes were divided into control group and hypoxia group.MTT assay,flow cytometry,reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)and Western blot were used to detect related indicators.Possible mechanisms by which hUCMSCs exosomes affect VEGF-A expression in hypoxia-induced mouse retinal astrocytes were explored.At last,the efficacy of exosomes of UCMSCs in a mouse ROP model was explored.Graphpad6 was used to comprehensively process data information.RESULTS:The secretion was successfully extracted from the culture supernatant of hUCMSCs by gradient ultracentrifugation.Reactive oxygen species(ROS)and hypoxia inducible factor-1α(HIF-1α)of mice retinal astrocytes under different hypoxia time and the expression level of VEGF-A protein and VEGF-A mRNA increased,and the ROP cell model was established after 6h of hypoxia.The secretions of medium and high concentrations of hUCMSCs can reduce ROS and HIF-1α,the expression levels of VEGF-A protein and VEGF-A mRNA are statistically significant and concentration dependent.Compared with the ROP cell model group,the expression of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase(PI3K)/protein kinase B(AKT)/mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR)signal pathway related factors in the hUCMSCs exocrine group is significantly decreased.The intravitreal injection of the secretions of medium and high concentrations of hUCMSCs can reduce VEGF-A and HIF-1αin ROP model tissues.HE staining shows that the number of retinal neovascularization in ROP mice decreases with the increase of the dose of hUCMSCs secretion.CONCLUSION:In a hypoxia induced mouse retinal astrocyte model,hUCMSCs exosomes

Mutations in the Contactin-associated protein-like 2(CNTNAP2)gene are associated with autism spectrum disorder(ASD),and ectodomain shedding of the CNTNAP2 protein plays a role in its function.However,key enzymes involved in the C-terminal cleavage of CNTNAP2 remain largely unknown,and the effect of ASD-associated mutations on this process and its role in ASD pathogenesis remain elusive.In this report we showed that CNTNAP2 undergoes sequential cleavages by furin,ADAM10/17-dependent a-secretase and presenilindependent y-secretase.We identified that the cleavage sites of ADAM10 and ADAM17 in CNTNAP2 locate at its C-terminal residue I79 and L96,and the main a-cleavage product C79 by ADAM10 is required for the subsequent y-secretase cleavage to generate CNTNAP2 intracellular domain(CICD).ASD-associated CNTNAP2 mutations impair the a-cleavage to generate C79,and the inhibition leads to ASDIlike repetitive and social behavior abnormalties in the Cntnap2l1254T knock-in mice.Finaly,exogenous expression of 79 improves autism-ike phenotypes in the Cntnap2^(11254T) knock-in and Cntnap2^(-/-)knockout mice.This data demonstrates that the a-secretase is essential for CNTNAP2 processing and its function.Our study indicates that inhibition of the cleavage by pathogenic mutations underlies ASD pathogenesis,and upregulation of its C-terminal fragments could have therapeutical potentials for ASD treatment.

Effects of the FIFA 11+program on performance,biomechanical measures,and physiological responses:A systematic review

Background:The side effects of the FIFA 11+program on performance have not been generally reviewed.The objective of this study was to synthesize the literature on the effects of the 11+on players’performance.Methods:Five online databases(PubMed,Scopus,ScienceDirect,Springer,and Google Scholar)were searched(from April 2006 to March 2022)using predefined keywords and sub-keywords.The potential references were primarily recorded through Endnote and imported to Covidence.Out of the 123 references screened by 2 blinded researchers through the software,59 full texts were assessed for eligibility,33 of which were ultimately included.The quality of the studies and the risk of bias were then assessed.Study ID,title,place,aim,design,start/end dates,population description,study criteria,statistical analysis,and outcomes were extracted.Results:Studies were conducted on male and female players aged 10-32 years old.The quality of the studies was moderate to high,and except for unclear bias for blinding outcome assessment,the risk of bias for all domains was low.Long-term application of the 11+improved most biomechanical measures and physiological responses except for lower extremity stability,ankle evertors time latency,ankle dorsiflexion,and proprioception.Conversely,the 11+showed acute negative effects on physical performance compared to dynamic warm-ups and non-significant effects on technical abilities.Conclusion:Mid-to-long-term implementation of the 11+improved the maj ority of biomechanical and a couple of physical measure s but showed no effects on technical skills.Precaution must be observed for using the 11+before competitions,as it could acutely decrease physical/technical performance.Given the contradictory nature of the literature,further studies should evaluate the short-to-mid-term effects of the 11+.Further studies are required to address ankle responses to the 11+intervention.

Capturability-based Fuzzy Footstep Planner for a Biped Robot with Centroidal Compliance

Compliance motion and footstep adjustment are active balance control strategies from learning human subconscious behaviors.The force estimation without direct end-actuator force measurement and the optimal footsteps based on complex analytical calculation are still challenging tasks for elementary and kid-size position-controlled robots.In this paper,an online compliant controller with Gravity Projection Observer(GPO),which can express the external force condition of perturbations by the estimated Projection of Gravity(PoG)with estimation covariance,is proposed for the realization of disturbance absorption,with which the robustness of the humanoid contact with environments can be maintained.The fuzzy footstep planner based on capturability analysis is proposed,and the Model Predictive Control(MPC)is applied to generate the desired steps.The fuzzification rules are well-designed and give the corresponding control output responding to complex and changeable external disturbances.To validate the presented methods,a series of experiments on a real humanoid robot are conducted.The results verify the effectiveness of the proposed balance control framework.
