Nitrogen Mineralization in Soils Along a Vegetation Chronosequence in hong kong

This research examined nitrogen mineralization in the top 10 cm of soils along a vegetation gradient in hong kong at sites where fire has been absent for 0, 1, 3, 6 and 17 years (at the time of the study), and the relationships between N mineralization and successional development of vegetation in the absence of fire. The sites including a newly burnt area (S1), short grassland (S2), tall grassland (S3), mixed tall grassland and shrubland (S4), and woodland (S5) were selected,and the in situ core incubation method was used to estimate nitrogen mineralization. Throughout the 60-day incubation in four periods, more nitrogen was mineralized at the S3 and S4 sites, the predominantly grassland sites, which contained the highest levels of soil organic matter (SOM) and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), than the S1 site, while immobilization occurred at the S2 and S5 sites. Leaching loss decreased with successional development of the vegetation, in the order of S1 ＞ S2 ＞ S3 ＞ S4 ＞ S5. The pattern of nitrogen uptake with ecological succession was less conspicuous, being complicated by the immediate effect of fire and possibly the ability of the woodland species to extract nitrogen from the deeper *** the absence of fire for 3 to 6 years, the build-up of SOM and TKN was accompanied by active mineralization, thus paving the way for the invasion of shrub and tree species. A close relationship existed between nitrogen mineralization and ecological succession with this vegetation gradient. Inherent mechanisms to preserve nitrogen in a fire-prone environment including immobilization and uptake and the practical relevance of nitrogen mineralization to reforestation are discussed.

Experience of living donor liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma in the university of hong kong Hospital

Aim:To describe the current practise of living donor liver transplantation(LDLT)for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),including the patient selection criteria,surgical techniques,management of small-for-size syndrome,postoperative complications,and the results of our units,in the Liver Transplant Centre of Queen Mary Hospital,hong kong,one of the high-volume centres for LDLT in ***:Our centre practises careful selection for HCC patients using the university of California,San Francisco(UCSF)criteria,supplemented by alpha-fetoprotein level and the model for end-stage liver disease *** flexibility is offered to enthusiastic donors and recipients in LDLT while balancing the risks and *** pioneered in using the extended right lobe graft and the novel hepatic venoplasty technique,which lessen the risk of hyperperfusion and small-for-size syndrome with improved overall recipient *** were collected prospectively and presented as the mean values and ranges,or the number of patients in proportion of total patient ***:Of our patients,74.9% met the UCSF criteria,and 64.5% met the Milan criteria.A 5-year overall and disease-free survival rate of 78.9% and 76.3% were ***:LDLT is an ideal treatment for HCC in hong kong with regard to the critical organ shortage and high demand for *** current surgical techniques and post-transplant surveillance contribute to the positive outcome.

A historical re-analysis of the calamitous midget typhoon passing through hong kong region on 18 September 1906 and its storm surge impact to hong kong region

A typhoon passed through hong kong region suddenly and unexpectedly on 18 September 1906(the“Typhoon 1906”)and had a disastrous impact on Victoria Harbour and its surroundings in just a couple of *** the year 1906 was the“Bingwu”year in the Chinese calendar,the typhoon is also known historically as the“Bingwu Typhoon”.Tremendous loss of lives and property resulted,and the shipping and fishing communities were *** mysteries arising from this calamitous typhoon have existed to date:1)Why the hong kong region Observatory was not able to provide any forewarning?2)whether the storm surge reported in some contemporary records is entirely credible?This paper will focus on both of *** this paper,we re-analyse historical weather observations recorded in various historical documents and estimate the possible storm size,intensity and track of Typhoon 1906 using tropical cyclone *** on the re-analyses,the storm surges,storm tides and wave heights in hong kong region are also estimated using storm surge and wave *** results reveal that Typhoon 1906 was a midget typhoon,with a radius of maximum winds of 11 km or smaller,during its passage through hong kong *** explains why it was technically impossible for a forewarning to be given at that time when real-time weather observations from ships,meteorological satellites and radars were *** also estimate that the maximum storm surges(storm tides)in hong kong region were not higher than 0.82 m(2.43 mCD)and 1.98 m(4.15 mCD)in Victoria Harbour and Tolo Harbour *** figures are found to be limited by the intensity and the storm size of the ***,we conclude that the previously documented storm surge figures are not supported by the present study.

Antiviral polysaccharides isolated from hong kong brown seaweed Hydroclathrus clathratus

Two relatively pure polysaccharides H3-a1 and H3-b1 had been isolated from the brown seaweed Hy-droclathrus clathratus. They were characterized by HPLC, ultraviolet scanning, gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and shown to be two different sulfated polysaccharides with different monosaccharide content, but both with high relative molecular mass. They contained some proteins and uronic acid respectively. The sulfate content and bioactivity of these polysaccha-rides varied during purification. The fractions derived from the hot water extract also exhibited low anticoagulant effect. This is the first time that the antiherpetic and anticoagulant activities were evaluated for the polysaccharides from the hong kong brown seaweed Hydroclathrus clathratus.

INFLUENCE OF MINERAL ADMIXTURES ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE CONCRETE

The improvements of the mechanical properties, including bulk density of fresh mixtures, elastic modulus, and compressive strengths of four high-performance concrete mixtures, made with the addition of fly ash, refined ground blast - furnace microslag (microslag) and silica fume are studied. The concrete mixtures were determined based on the dispersion testing results. The study indicates that the elastic modulus at 28 and 91 days, and compressive strengths of the concretes are improved a lot when fly ash and microslag by 25 percent by weight of cement are added into the mixtures individually. The improvement is especially evident when silica fume by 5 percent and fly ash by 25 percent by weight of cement are added together into the mixture, while the fresh concrete mixture keeps a good workability. Through the analysis of chemically combined water ratios of the four mixtures at various hydration ages, it is found that the addition of all these mineral mixtures are beneficial to the hydration process, especially, at later stages, which might be one of the reasons for the improvement of mechanical properties. Since the 19th century,Chinese societies,as latecomers to modernization,have prioritized Western *** on European and North American experiences,modern universities were created to serve this *** little linkage to their indigenous cultural traditions,they operate in Confucian socio-cultural contexts,with constant and longstanding struggles with their cultural *** recent decades,these societies have progressed remarkably well in higher *** experience could be seen as a cultural experiment that is placed highly on their sustainable development *** products of their modern education systems especially at the elite level have demonstrated a grasp of both traditional and Western knowledge,with their very best universities well positioned to combine Chinese and Western ideas of a university in everyday *** a bi-cultural condition contrasts sharply to the still largely mono-cultural(Western only)university operating environment in the *** integration opens further space for their universities to explore an alternative to the Western academic model that has long dominated world higher *** on fieldwork at premier universities in Beijing,hong kong,Singapore,and Taipei,this article calls for a reconceptualized view of modern university development in Chinese *** argues that the experiment enables their top universities to bring back their cultural traditions to integrate with Western values and contribute to inter-civilizational dialogue.

A clinical pathway for integrative medicine in the treatment of functional constipation in hong kong,China

Objective:Functional constipation(FC)is a common intestinal disease *** the presence of criteria such as Roman IV,there is no standardized diagnosis and treatment algorithm in hong kong that combines both Western and Chinese medicine *** study integrates current effective and safe diagnosis and treatment methods for FC and provides a clear and scientific pathway for clinical professionals and ***:A systematic search of the PubMed,Cochrane Library,and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases was performed from their inception to June 30th,2022,collecting the current evidence about the efficacious integrative management for *** organized a meeting of professionals in fields relevant to treatment and management of FC to develop a consensus agreement on clinical pathway ***:We developed a clinical pathway for the treatment of FC based on the most recent published guidelines and consultation with *** pathway includes a hierarchy of recommendations for every step of the clinical process,including clinical intake,diagnostic examination,recommended labs,diagnostic flowchart,and guidance for selection of therapeutic ***:This pathway establishes clinical standards for the diagnosis and treatment of FC using Chinese medicine and Western medicine;it will help to provide high-quality medical services in hong kong for patients with FC.

CAD APPROACH FOR PLASTIC MOULD PARTING DIRECTIONS OPTIMIZATION

A CAD approach which can optimize and automate the parting direction determination is presented. The approach is based on the geometrical and topological information of the solid modelling of the plastic moulded part in order to select a pair of optimal parting directions of a two plate mould which minimizes the number of side cores. The shell of a part is divided into inter influential regions and non influential faces in the mould design point of view. Through analyzing and computing the accessibility direction cones of the inter influential regions, the optimal parting directions can be determined automatically.

Family Business Succession in hong kong： The Case of Yung Kee

This case study examines the succession of Chinese family business in hong kong, drawing upon theories of the firm. More specifically, it utilizes capabilities theories, property rights economics and Neo-Confucianism to understand management disputes and infighting among the members in a Chinese family business in hong kong. This paper will argue that the founder of a Chinese business firm in hong kong is able to lead his or her offspring to create a dynamic enterprise via charismatic leadership and family rules embedded in traditional Chinese values. However, these two strategic assets disappear following the passing away of the founder as well as the emergence of new social values. When the founder passes on the enterprise to his or her offspring using more or less the equal inheritance system, the traditional Chinese value is unable to enforce the leader＇s will to consolidate the strengths of the second generation family members to maintain the founder＇s business. Furthermore, when the business is owned by all family members, property rights of the firm become unclear. Without effective enforcement of traditional Chinese values and with collective ownership rights, some family members will have the incentive to capture the economic rent that is shared by all members. In other words, some family members behave opportunistically or even cheat in order to capture economic gains in the public domain. High monitoring and enforcement costs in the form of court battle and endless disputes will occur. Rent dissipation occurs in the form of deterioration of the quality of the family business. This casestudy is based on Yung Kee, an intemationally well-known roast goose restaurant in hong kong as an illustration.
