Spline finite strip has been successfully applied in solving right plates and shells by Cheung et al in 1982. In this paper, the method is extended to the analysis of parallelogram plate. This extension still retains the banded nature of the spline finite strip and only small amount of extra computing effort is required. Further-more, the discretisation error of the above method is established theoretically as a general case for the spline finite strip method.

Exploring the history of the silk-reeling industry in Chichibu, Japan, this paper challenges the prevalent representation of mountain communities as marginal economic peripheries of the metropolitan center or as reservoirs of poverty and backwardness. Mountain districts were the cradle of an Asian 搃ndustrious?revolution that led to Japan抯 modernization. The highland-based silk-reeling producers pioneered an autonomous Asian model of industrial development, which competed successfully against the capital-intensive system introduced from the West into coastal cities. The export strength of silk-producing households in upland villages overturns the claim that Japan抯 economic miracle was based on the introduction of Western technology and administrative systems. To the contrary, the Asian-style management practices and labor standards developed by the silk producers were transferred to a succession of other industries. These indigenous practices account for the rise of Japanese industry in world markets. The clash between the two opposing models of modernization resulted in modern Japan抯 first major civil conflict, the Chichibu Rebellion of 1884, a legacy that has major implications for today抯 recession-mired Japan as well as for developing countries striving for an alternative path to economic development.

A new approach to evaluate the extreme value distribution （EVD） of the response and reliability of general multi-DOF nonlinear stochastic structures is proposed. The approach is based on the recently developed probability density evolution method, which enables the instantaneous probability density functions of the stochastic responses to be captured. In the proposed method, a virtual stochastic process is first constructed to satisfy the condition that the extreme value of the response equals the value of the constructed process at a certain instant of time. The probability density evolution method is then applied to evaluate the instantaneous probability density function of the response, yielding the EVD. The reliability is therefore available through a simple integration over the safe domain. A numerical algorithm is developed using the Number Theoretical Method to select the discretized representative points. Further, a hyper-ball is imposed to sieve the points from the preceding point set in the hypercube. In the numerical examples, the EVD of random variables is evaluated and compared with the analytical solution. A frame structure is analyzed to capture the EVD of the response and the dynamic reliability. The investigations indicate that the proposed approach provides reasonable accuracy and efficiency.

Flexible spacecraft with large appendages such as the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) requires special attention in addressing stability robustness. The control system must be capable to handle the loop interaction effects and plant configuration variations. The classical single loop stability analysis may no longer guarantee robustness due to loop coupling especially when the control loops interact with low flexible modes. This paper describes a Multi-Input-Multi-Output (MIMO) stability check using the μ-analysis to guarantee robustness. The classical gain (GM) and phase margins (PM) have been extended for MIMO systems using the μ-analysis. Furthermore, instead of a certain fixed ratio between the guaranteed bounds on GM and PM for a specified μ-value, a recent result shows improvement can be made by correlating any combination of such margins to a specific μ-value. Consequently, a more specific stability analysis can be performed resulting in a less conservative control system design.

Two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation for the Yangtze Estuary is performed by using the Delft3D model adopting the shallow water equations and the finite volume method on a curvilinear body-fitted grid. The model is calibrated and validated using available tidal data and field measurements. The velocity vector fields, the tidal levels, the trajectories of drogues and the far field sewage dilution from the existing and proposed outfalls are studied for the spring/neap tide and the dry/wet season. The results show that the tidal currents and the runoff flow are able to dilute and disperse the sewage from the outfalls to the outer sea. The sewage dilution contours under various hydrodynamic conditions indicate that the discharged effluent at present have relatively minor impact on the water environment of the Yangtze Estuary; whereas the planned sewage plan would significantly deteriorate the water quality of the estuary in the absence of any treatment, especially during the neap tide of dry season. The drogue tracking shows that the effluent from the four outfalls will be transported downstream to the Hangzhou Bay. A study on the pollution due to the project and the self-purification capacity of Hangzhou Bay is proposed in addition to that of the Yangtze Estuary.

This paper presents an empirical investigation on an important policy issue, namely, whether there is any evidence supporting monetary integration between the Chinese mainland and hong kong. We follow two lines of inquiry. First, we present a series of simple tests to find the extent to which trade and/or financial linkages exist between the two regions. Second, we use simple inflation and output differentials and structural VAR techniques to test for the degree of business cycle synchronization between the two regions. The results indicate that there is evidence supporting the existence of trade linkages and that there is also support for the possible synchronization of business cycles. We discuss the implications of this for monetary integration between hong kong and the mainland
