Key factors in developing the trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-induced post-inflammatory irritable bowel syndrome model in rats

AIM:To investigate the key factors in developing the trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid(TNBS)-induced postinflammatory irritable bowel syndrome(PI-IBS)model in rats. METHODS:TNBS was administered to rats at the following conditions:(1)with different doses(20,10,5 mg/0.8 mL per rat);(2)with same dose in different concentrations(20 mg/rat,25,50 mg/mL);(3)in different ethanol percentage(25%,50%);and(4)at depth either 4 cm or 8 cm from *** 5 d and 4 wk after TNBS administration,inflammation severity and inflammation resolution were *** 4 and 8 wk after TNBS application,visceral hyperalgesia and enterochromaffin(EC)cell hyperplasia were assayed by abdominal withdrawal reflex test,silver staining and capillary electrophoresis. RESULTS:Our results showed that:(1)TNBS induced dose-dependent acute inflammation and inflammation *** 5 d post TNBS,the pathological score and myeloperoxidase(MPO)activity in all TNBS treated rats were significantly elevated compared to that of the control(9.48±1.86,8.18±0.67,5.78± 0.77 vs 0,and 3.55±1.11,1.80±0.82,0.97±0.08 unit/mg vs 0.14±0.01 unit/mg,P<0.05).At 4 wk post TNBS,the pathological score in high and median dose TNBS-treated rats were still significantly higher than that of the control(1.52±0.38 and 0.80±0.35 vs 0,P<0.05);(2)Intracolonic TNBS administration position affected the persistence of visceral *** 4 wk post TNBS,abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR)threshold pressure in all TNBS-treated groups were decreased compared to that of the control(21.52 ±1.73 and 27.10±1.94 mmHg vs 34.44±1.89 mmHg,P<0.05).At 8 wk post TNBS,AWR threshold pressure in 8 cm administration group was still significantly decreased(23.33±1.33 mmHg vs 36.79±2.29 mmHg,P<0.05);(3)Ethanol percentage affected the TNBS-induced inflammation severity and visceral *** TNBS-25%ethanol-treated group,the pathological score and MPO activity were significantly lowered compared to that of the TNBS-50%ethanoltreated group,while AWR thres

Mitochondrial function is fundamental to neuroregeneration,particularly in neurons,where high energy demands are essential for repair and recovery(Patrón and Zinsmaier,2016;Beckervordersandforth et al.,2017;Iwata et al.,2023).Mitochondrial dysfunction,characterized by an imbalance in ATP levels and excessive production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species,is a key factor that impedes neural regeneration in neurodegenerative diseases and after neuronal injury(Han et al.,2016,2020;Zheng et al.,2016;Zong et al.,2024).

The European Congress for integrative medicine 2015 Global Summit on integrative medicine and Healthcare in Greater Copenhagen has successfully promoted integrative medicine to the public once again. integrative medicine, which is called the art and science of healthcare by Nordic integrative medicine, has been widely used in the world. In hong kong, integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, which is also known as the Chinese version of integrative medicine, provides a valuable reference for the development of integrative medicine in the world. In this article, we introduce the development of traditional Chinese medicine in hong kong and an integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine model in the University of hong kong-Shenzhen Hospital.

Background Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)is becoming a popular complementary approach in pediatric ***,few or no meta-analyses have focused on clinical studies of the use of TCM in pediatric *** We explored the patterns of TCM use and its efficacy in children with cancer,using a systematic review,meta-analysis and data mining *** strategy We conducted a search of five English(Allied and Complementary medicine Database,Embase,PubMed,Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials,and ***)and four Chinese databases(Wanfang Data,China National Knowledge Infrastructure,Chinese Biomedical Literature Database,and VIP Chinese Science and Technology Periodicals Database)for clinical studies published before October 2021,using keywords related to“pediatric,”“cancer,”and“TCM.”Inclusion criteria We included studies which were randomized controlled trials(RCTs)or observational clinical studies,focused on patients aged<19 years old who had been diagnosed with cancer,and included at least one group of subjects receiving TCM *** extraction and analysis The methodological quality of RCTs and observational studies was assessed using the six-item Jadad scale and the Effective Public Healthcare Panacea Project Quality Assessment Tool,***-analysis was used to evaluate the efficacy of combining TCM with *** outcomes included the treatment response rate and occurrence of cancer-related *** rule mining(ARM)was used to investigate the associations among medicinal herbs and patient *** The fifty-four studies included in this analysis were comprised of RCTs(63.0%)and observational studies(37.0%).Most RCTs focused on hematological malignancies(41.2%).The study outcomes included chemotherapy-induced toxicities(76.5%),infection rate(35.3%),and response,survival or relapse rate(23.5%).The methodological quality of most of the RCTs(82.4%)and observational studies(80.0%)was r

Background Stroke is a major cause of death or long-term disability *** patients with stroke receive integrative therapy consisting of Western medicine(WM)and routine rehabilitation in conjunction with Chinese medicine(CM),such as acupuncture and Chinese herbal ***,there is no available evidence on the effectiveness of the combined use of WM and CM interventions in stroke *** The purpose of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the results of all individual studies to assess the combined use of CM and WM in stroke rehabilitation compared with WM *** The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines were ***,EMBASE,Cochrane and China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI)were *** included outcomes were dependency,motor function,depression and swallowing *** analysis was performed,and publication bias was assessed using funnel *** of review 58 studies and 6339 patients were included in the *** analysis revealed that combined therapy comprising both acupuncture and WM had a superior effect on improving dependency and swallowing function compared with standard WM therapy *** superiority of combined therapy comprising CM and WM in improving depression compared with standard WM therapy was also *** Our results indicate that the combined use of CM and WM could be more efficacious in stroke rehabilitation compared with the use of WM therapy ***,most studies were short in duration(2 to 4 weeks)and prone to different types of biases,which prevents making any conclusion regarding the long-term effects and raises concerns regarding true efficacy in context of high likelihood of Hawthorn ***,more randomised controlled trials with more rigorous design and longer duration of treatment and follow-up need to be conducted to compare WM alone versus WM and CM combined.

Virtual colonoscopy-induced perforation in a patient with Crohn's disease

We report a case of sigmoid colon perforation in a patient with Crohn's disease undergoing computed-tomographic (CT) colonography. A 70-year-old patient with Crohn's disease with terminal ileitis and sigmoid stricture underwent CT colonography after incomplete conventional colonoscopy. During the procedure, the colon was inflated by air insufflation and the patient developed abdominal pain with radiological evidence of retroperitoneal and intraperitoneal free gas. Hartmann's operation was performed. This case highlights that CT colonography is not risk-free. The risk of perforation may be higher in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
