Spatio-temporal variation of water salinity in mangroves revealed by continuous monitoring and its relationship to floristic diversity

Salinity is among the most critical factors limiting the growth and species distribution of coastal *** salinity in estuarine ecosystems varies temporally and spatially,but the variation patterns across different time scales and salinity fluctuation have rarely been *** effects of salinity on floristic diversity in mangroves are not fully understood due to the temporal and spatial heterogeneity of *** this study,we monitored water salinity at an interval of 10-min over one year in three mangrove catchment areas representing the outer part,middle part,and inner part respectively of Dongzhai Bay,Hainan,*** number of mangrove community types and dominant mangrove species of the three catchment areas were also *** found that the diurnal variation and dry-season intra-month variation in water salinity were driven by tidal *** seasonal variation in water salinity was mainly driven by rainfall with higher salinity occurring in the dry season and lower salinity occurring in the wet ***,water salinity was highest at the outer part,intermediate at the middle part,and lowest at the inner part of the *** intra-month and annual fluctuations of water salinity were highest at the middle part and lowest at the outer part of the *** number of mangrove community types and dominant species were lowest at the outer part,intermediate at the middle part,and highest at the inner part of the *** results suggest that the temporal variation of water salinity in mangroves is driven by different factors at different time scales and therefore it is necessary to measure water salinity at different time scales to get a complete picture of the saline environment that mangroves ***,lower salinity levels benefit mangrove species richness within a bay landscape,however,further research is needed to distinguish the effects of salinity fluctuation and salinity level in affecting mangrove species richness.

DEAR EDITOR,Accurate estimation of population size is a crucial issue in wildlife population ecology and *** Global Positioning System(GPS)collars are well recognized as an effective method for monitoring wildlife behavior,their application in direct wildlife population size estimation remains *** this study,GPS telemetry was employed to survey a rhesus macaque(Macaca mulatta)population on Neilingding Island in Guangdong,*** May 2021 to April 2022,32 macaques across nine groups were fitted with GPS collars,producing a dataset of 109739 location *** data from all tracked individuals revealed the annual home ranges of the nine groups.

The link between climate and war has long been a topic of great scientific and social *** this study,we investigate the influence of climate on warfare in China’s Hexi Corridor region since 241 *** the superposed epoch analysis of tree-ring data and historical war data,we observe a notable correlation between interannual dry-wet variations and wars instigated by nomadic groups in the Hexi ***,this relationship is dynamic and influenced by the region’s relative *** periods in which the Hexi Corridor was ruled by multiple regimes,wars tended to follow dry climatic conditions,which may be due to the fact that unusual drought during these periods likely heightened competition for resources and ***,during times of regional unity,wars were more likely to occur when climatic conditions were wet because the expansion of rangelands and the accumulation of resources helped fuel the nomads’outward *** findings underscore the complexity of the relationship between war and climate *** gain a more comprehensive understanding of this relationship,continuous,high-resolution historical temperature and humidity datasets with broader and more uniform coverage are needed across multiple *** addition,collecting and examining disaggregated historical war data for regions with distinct characteristics is essential.

Ticks are a major parasite on the Qınghai-Tibet Plateau,western China,and represent an economic burden to agriculture and animal *** research on tick-borne pathogens that threaten humans and animals,the viromes of dominant tick species in this area remain *** this study,we collected Dermacentor nuttalli ticks near Qınghai Lake and identified 13 viruses belonging to at least six families through metagenomic *** viruses were of high abundance in pools,including Xınjiang tick-associated virus 1(XJTAV1),and three novel viruses:Qınghai Lake virus 1,Qınghai Lake virus 2(QHLV1,and QHLV2,unclassified),and Qınghai Lake virus 3(QHLV3,genus Uukuvirus of family Phenuiviridae in order Bunyavirales),which lacks the M *** minimum infection rates of the four viruses in the tick groups were 8.2%,49.5%,6.2%,and 24.7%,respectively,suggesting the prevalence of these viruses in *** ticks.A putative M segment of QHLV3 was identified from the next-generation sequencing data and further characterized for its signal peptide cleavage site,N-glycosylation,and transmembrane ***,we probed the L,M,and S segments of other viruses from sequencing data of other tick pools by using the putative M segment sequence of *** revealing the viromes of *** ticks,this study enhances our understanding of tick-borne viral communities in highland *** putative M segment identified in a novel uukuvirus suggests that previously identified uukuviruses without M segments should have had the same genome organization as typical *** findings will facilitate virus discovery and our understanding of the phylogeny of tick-borne uukuviruses.

Effects of desert plant communities on soil enzyme activities and soil organic carbon in the proluvial fan in the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountain in Ningxia,China

It is of great significance to study the effects of desert plants on soil enzyme activities and soil organic carbon(SOC)for maintaining the stability of the desert *** this study,we studied the responses of soil enzyme activities and SOC fractions(particulate organic carbon(POC)and mineral-associated organic carbon(MAOC))to five typical desert plant communities(Convolvulus tragacanthoides,Ephedra rhytidosperma,Stipa breviflora,Stipa tianschanica ***,and Salsola laricifolia communities)in the proluvial fan in the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountain in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region,*** recorded the plant community information mainly including the plant coverage and herb and shrub species,and obtained the aboveground biomass and plant species diversity through sample surveys in late July *** samples were also collected at depths of 0–10 cm(topsoil)and 10–20 cm(subsoil)to determine the soil physicochemical properties and enzyme *** results showed that the plant coverage and aboveground biomass of *** community were significantly higher than those of ***,***,and *** *** communities(P<0.05).Soil enzyme activities varied among different plant *** the topsoil,the enzyme activities of alkaline phosphatase(ALP)andβ-1,4-glucosidas(βG)were significantly higher in *** and *** *** communities than in other plant communities(P<0.05).The topsoil had higher POC and MAOC contents than the ***,the content of POC in the topsoil was 18.17%–42.73%higher than that in the *** structural equation model(SEM)indicated that plant species diversity,soil pH,and soil water content(SWC)were the main factors influencing POC and *** soil pH inhibited the formation of POC and promoted the formation of ***,SWC stimulated POC production and hindered MAOC *** study aimed to gain insight into the effects of desert plant c

COVID-19 lockdown has indirect,non-equivalent effects on activity patterns of Reeves's Pheasant(Syrmaticus reevesii)and sympatric species

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has brought massive shifts in human activities through a global blockade,directly affecting wildlife ***,the indirect impacts of changes in human activities are often easily *** conducted surveys of Reeves's Pheasant(Syrmaticus reevesii)and its sympatric species by camera traps in forest-type nature reserves in three different scenarios:pre-lockdown,lockdown and *** increase in livestock activities observed during the lockdown and post-lockdown period in our study area provided us an opportunity to investigate the indirect impact of the lockdown on *** prelockdown period was used as a baseline to compare any changes in trends of relative abundance index,activity patterns and temporal spacing of targeted species and *** the lockdown period,the relative abundance index of livestock increased by 50%and there was an increase in daytime ***'s Pheasant showed avoidance responses to almost all sympatric species and livestock in three different periods,and the livestock avoidance level of Reeves's Pheasant during the lockdown period was significantly and positively correlated with the relative abundance index of ***-specific changes in activity patterns of study species were observed,with reduced daytime activities of Hog Badger and Raccoon Dog during and after the confinement *** study highlights the effect of the COVID-19 lockdown on the responses of wildlife by considering the changes in their temporal and spatial use before,during and after *** knowledge gained on wildlife during reduced human mobility because of the pandemic aids in understanding the effect of human disturbances and developing future conservation strategies in the shared space,to manage both wildlife and livestock.

Machine learning ensemble model prediction of northward shift in potato cyst nematodes(Globodera rostochiensis and ***)distribution under climate change conditions

Potato cyst nematodes(PCNs)are a significant threat to potato production,having caused substantial damage in many *** the future distribution of PCN species is crucial to implementing effective biosecurity strategies,especially given the impact of climate change on pest species invasion and *** learning(ML),specifically ensemble models,has emerged as a powerful tool in predicting species distributions due to its ability to learn and make predictions based on complex data ***,this research utilised advanced machine learning techniques to predict the distribution of PCN species under climate change conditions,providing the initial element for invasion risk *** first used Global Climate Models to generate homogeneous climate predictors to mitigate the variation among ***,five machine learning models were employed to build two groups of ensembles,single-algorithm ensembles(ESA)and multi-algorithm ensembles(EMA),and compared their *** this research,the EMA did not always perform better than the ESA,and the ESA of Artificial Neural Network gave the highest performance while being *** results indicated that the distribution range of PCNs would shift northward with a decrease in tropical zones and an increase in northern ***,the total area of suitable regions will not change significantly,occupying 16-20%of the total land surface(18%under current conditions).This research alerts policymakers and practitioners to the risk of PCNs’incursion into new ***,this ML process offers the capability to track changes in the distribution of various species and provides scientifically grounded evidence for formulating long-term biosecurity plans for their control.

Response of ecosystem carbon storage to land use change from 1985 to 2050 in the Ningxia Section of Yellow River Basin,China

Regional sustainable development necessitates a holistic understanding of spatiotemporal variations in ecosystem carbon storage(ECS),particularly in ecologically sensitive areas with arid and semi-arid *** this study,we calculated the ECS in the Ningxia Section of Yellow River Basin,China from 1985 to 2020 using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs(InVEST)model based on land use *** further predicted the spatial distribution of ECS in 2050 under four land use scenarios:natural development scenario(NDS),ecological protection scenario(EPS),cultivated land protection scenario(CPS),and urban development scenario(UDS)using the patch-generating land use simulation(PLUS)model,and quantified the influences of natural and human factors on the spatial differentiation of ECS using the geographical detector(Geodetector).Results showed that the total ECS of the study area initially increased from 1985 until reaching a peak at 402.36×10^(6) t in 2010,followed by a decreasing trend to *** spatial distribution of ECS was characterized by high values in the eastern and southern parts of the study area,and low values in the western and northern *** 1985 and 2020,land use changes occurred mainly through the expansion of cultivated land,woodland,and construction land at the expense of unused *** total ECS in 2050 under different land use scenarios(ranked as EPS>CPS>NDS>UDS)would be lower than that in *** light was the largest contributor to the spatial differentiation of ECS,with soil type and annual mean temperature being the major natural driving *** of this study could provide guidance on the ecological construction and high-quality development in arid and semi-arid areas.

Sri Lankan cassava mosaic virus(SLCMV)is a prominent causative agent of cassava mosaic disease in Asia and relies on the whitefly Bemisia tabaci cryptic complex for its ***,the molecular mechanisms involved in SLCMV transmission by *** have yet to be *** this study,we identified an aminopeptidase N-like protein(BtAPN)in *** Asia II 1,an efficient vector of SLCMV,which is involved in the SLCMV transmission *** the use of glutathione S-transferase pull-down assay and LC-MS/MS analysis,we demonstrated the interaction between BtAPN and the coat protein(CP)of *** interaction was further confirmed in vitro,and we observed an induction of BtAPN gene expression following SLCMV *** interfering with the function of BtAPN,the quantities of SLCMV were significantly reduced in various parts of *** Asia II 1,including the whole body,midgut,hemolymph,and primary salivary ***,we discovered that BtAPN is conserved in *** Middle East-Asia Minor 1(MEAM1)and interacts with the CP of tomato yellow leaf curl virus(TYLCV),a begomovirus known to cause severe damage to tomato *** BtAPN with antibody led to a significant reduction in the quantities of TYLCV in whitefly whole body and organs/*** results demonstrate that BtAPN plays a generic role in interacting with the CP of begomoviruses and positively regulates their acquisition by the whitefly.

Parasitoids are key regulators in ecological communities and widely used as agents in biocontrol *** fall armyworm,Spodoptera frugiperda,recently invaded multiple continents and caused substantial economic losses in *** zhonghuajia,a newly identified mite parasitoid,has shown potential for controlling various agricultural insect ***,this study tested the performance of *** in parasitising *** also investigated the sublethal effects of parasitism by *** on host fitness traits,transgenerational impacts,and cellular and humoral *** result showed that the fifth-instar larvae of *** parasitised by 40 *** were all dead(i.e.,a lethal effect),while parasitism by 5 or 10 *** was considered sublethal since many *** survived to adulthood and produced offspring after *** sublethal influences from parasitism by *** resulted in reduced pupal weight,adult emergence rate and fecundity,but increased developmental time and *** at both lethal(40 mites)and sublethal(10 mites)levels impaired the cellular and humoral immunity of *** study presents the first empirical evidence that mite parasitoids can negatively influence host ***,it provides insights into the biocontrol potential of mite parasitoids and their interactions with hosts.
