Biological models of Alzheimer’s disease(AD):Non-human models have contributed tremendously to the understanding of AD and its underlying pathological *** models have aided the investigation of the genetic and environmental risk *** also have enabled the progression of candidate therapies into human clinical *** of similarities with human brain anatomy and genetics,rodent models have been used extensively to recapitulate some aspects of AD pathology,measure AD-associated behavioral parameters and related nervous system dysfunctions(Eriksen and Janus,2007).For instance,transgenic mice overexpressing human amyloid precursor protein have furthered the development of the amyloid cascade hypothesis as a central pillar of familial AD.

Dear Editor The use of sequence-specific nucleases for plant genomic DNA mutagenesis is an exciting and rapidly developing tech- nology （Voytas and Merchant, 2013; Baltes and Voytas, 2014）. To date, most mutated plants have been recovered from transgenic plants stably expressing nucleases. However, transient nuclease delivery by plant DNA- and RNA-based viral vectors followed by regeneration of plantlets from modi- fied tissues has emerged as an alternative, efficient strategy in some plant species （Marton et al., 2010; Baltes et al., 2014）. Delivery of nucleases by plant RNA viruses is particularly attractive because they typically do not integrate into the plant genome, and therefore the mutated plants are not classified as transgenic （Marton et al., 2013; Voytas and Gao, 2014）.

The disciplines of evolutionary biology and plant and animal breeding have been intertwined throughout their development,with responses to artificial selection yielding insights into the action of natural selection and evolutionary biology providing statistical and conceptual guidance for modern *** we offer an evolutionary perspective on a grand challenge of the 21st century:feeding humanity in the face of climate *** first highlight promising strategies currently under way to adapt crops to current and future climate *** include methods to match crop varieties with current and predicted environments and to optimize breeding goals,management practices,and crop microbiomes to enhance yield and sustainable *** also describe the promise of crop wild relatives and recent technological innovations such as speed breeding,genomic selection,and genome editing for improving environmental resilience of existing crop varieties or for developing new ***,we discuss how methods and theory from evolutionary biology can enhance these existing strategies and suggest novel *** focus initially on methods for reconstructing the evolutionary history of crops and their pests and symbionts,because such historical information provides an overall framework for crop-improvement *** then describe how evolutionary approaches can be used to detect and mitigate the accumulation of deleterious mutations in crop genomes,identify alleles and mutations that underlie adaptation(and maladaptation)to agricultural environments,mitigate evolutionary trade-offs,and improve critical *** feedback between the evolution and crop biology communities will ensure optimal design of strategies for adapting crops to climate change.

In Arabidopsis,photoperiodic flowering is controlled by the regulatory hub gene CONSTANS(CO),whereas floral organ senescence is regulated by the jasmonates(JAs).Because these processes are chronologically ordered,it remains unknown whether there are common regulators of both *** this study,we discovered that CO protein accumulates in Arabidopsis flowers after floral induction,and it displays a diurnal pattern in floral organs different from that in the *** observed that altered CO expression could affect flower senescence and abscission by interfering with JA response,as shown by petal-specific transcriptomic analysis as well as CO overexpression in JA synthesis and signaling *** found that CO has a ZIM(ZINC-FINGER INFLORESCENCE MERISTEM)like domain that mediates its interaction with the JA response repressor JAZ3(jasmonate ZIM-domain 3).Their interaction inhibits the repressor activity of JAZ3,resulting in activation of downstream transcription factors involved in promoting flower ***,we showed that CO,JAZ3,and the E3 ubiquitin ligase COI1(Coronatine Insensitive 1)could form a protein complex in planta,which promotes the degradation of both CO and JAZ3 in the presence of *** together,our results indicate that CO,a key regulator of photoperiodic flowering,is also involved in promoting flower senescence and abscission by augmenting JA signaling and *** propose that coordinated recruitment of photoperiodic and JA signaling pathways could be an efficient way for plants to chronologically order floral processes and ensure the success of offspring production.

Sustainability assessment of potato fields using the DEXi decision support system in Hamadan Province, Iran

Potato is a staple food crop and the most important agricultural commodity, which critically affects food security and economic stability in Hamadan Province, Iran. Ex-ante sustainability appraisal of new cropping systems and their comparisons with conventional systems can increase the efficiencies of innovations and changes within the production process. This study aimed to explore the sustainability levels of potato cropping systems in Hamadan Province, Iran. To this end, DEXi methodology was developed for the sustainability assessment of the cropping systems. For assessing the three dimensions of environmental, economic, and social sustainability in the four systems of traditional potato system （TPS）, Quasi-industrial potato system （QIPS）, industrial potato system （IPS）, and government-promoted potato system （GPPS）, five groups of features were utilized：（1） irrigation method; （2） seed placement; （3） farm machinery use; （4） agrochemical use; and （5） rotation. The impact a^sessments of the cropping systems were based on two, three, and two groups of ecological, social, and economic indicators, respectively. Employment, supply chain, protection, operational difficulty, productivity, profitability, input use, and biodiversity resulted in 21 basic indicators and 13 aggregated indicators, by which the cropping systems were described. The results revealed that GPPS with distinctive economic and social profiles could have a better overall sustainability despite the fact that some indicators like biodiversity could be negatively affected. Finally, three strategies were recommended for the sustainability of GPPS as follows： biodiversity enhancement, input substitution, and integrated water management.

Various forms of complementary and alternative medicine are used in *** these,herbal medicines are frequently used as systemic and/or topical interventions either as a replacement for or in conjunction with conventional *** benefit of such use is *** review is to provide an up-to-date review and discussion of the clinical evidence for the main kinds of herbal therapies for *** of the biomedical databases PubMed（including MEDLINE）, EMBASE and CINAHL were conducted in December 2011 which identified 32 clinical studies,all published in *** of these primarily tested topical herbal medicines and were thus *** 12 studies that evaluated systemic use of herbal medicines were included in the *** were case series studies and the other 8 were controlled *** terms of interventions,4 studies tested the systemic use of plant oils combined with marine oils and 8 studies tested multi-ingredient herbal *** clinical evidence for plant and animal derived fatty acids is inconclusive and any benefit appears to be *** the multi-herb formulations,benefits of oral herbal medicines were shown in several studies,however,a number of these studies are not controlled trials,a diversity of interventions are tested and there are methodological issues in the controlled *** conclusion,there is promising evidence in a number of the studies of multi-herb ***,well-designed,adequately powered studies with proper control interventions are needed to further determine the benefits of these *** addition,syndrome differentiation should be incorporated into trial design to ensure effective translation of findings from these studies into Chinese medicine clinical practice.

The breeding and large-scale application of hybrid rice contribute significantly to the food supply ***,hybrid seed production uses cytoplasmic male sterile(CMS)lines or photoperiod/thermo-sensitive genic male sterile(PTGMS)lines as female *** huge successes,both systems have intrinsic *** systems are mainly restricted by the narrow restorer resources that make it difficult to breed superior hybrids,while PTGMS systems are limited by conditional sterility of the male sterile lines that makes the propagation of both PTGMS seeds and hybrid seeds vulnerable to unpredictable climate *** nuclear male sterile(NMS)lines insensitive to environmental conditions are widely distributed and are ideal for hybrid rice breeding and production,but the lack of effective ways to propagate the pure NMS lines in a large scale renders it impossible to use them for hybrid rice *** development of"the third-generation hybrid rice technology"enables efficient propagation of the pure NMS lines in commercial *** paper discusses the establishment of"the thirdgeneration hybrid rice technology"and further *** new technology breaks the limitations of CMS and PTGMS systems and will bring a big leap forward in hybrid rice production.

Soil amendments containing carbonized materials increase the soil carbon reservoir,influence plant productivity,and,ultimately,help to clean the *** is data on the effect of such additions on soil physicochemical properties or plant growth,but few studies have focused on how these carbonized materials are distributed by termite species in the soil *** is the first comprehensive study of the transportation of biochar(BC)by termite species under tropical environmental conditions in *** present study was carried out to test the hypothesis that if termite species I)were involved in the distribution of biochar particles II)if yes,then how far these particles were transported during the study period(10 days)and III)check their preference between the enriched BC(EBC)and non-enriched *** was enriched with the cattle slurry after its pyrolysis in the *** results showed that EBC particles were significantly more widely distributed than non-enriched BC particles,but both types of BC were transported more than 4 cm(ring 4)within 10 days(at the end of the experiment).The current study also revealed that EBC was easily attached to the setae,cuticle,and legs of termites,implying that it could potentially be transported over a greater ***,transportation of EBC over larger distances indicated a potential preference of termite species between the EBC and BC *** the study,however,the preference among the termite species was also *** the prevailing study conditions,the Coptotermes heimi and Heteroterme indicola species transported the EBC further than Microtermes obesi and Odontotermes *** findings revealed that transportation preferences were observed among the four termite *** conclusion,the current study found that termites were involved in the distribution of BC particles,with a preference for EBC and that these have the potential to transport BC particles more than 4 cm within 10 da
