Nano-delivery systems have been applied to deliver various synthetic/botanical pesticides to increase the efficiency of pesticide use and reduce the volumes of pesticides applied.Previous studies have supported the hypothesis that the nanocarriers can help expand the insecticidal target of pesticides to include non-target pests.However,the potential mechanism underlying this interesting phenomenon remains unclear.Herein,a widely applied star polycation(SPc)nanocarrier was synthesized to construct a thiamethoxam(TMX)nano-delivery system.The SPc-based delivery system could promote the translocation of exogenous substances across the membrane of Sf9 cells,increase the cytotoxicity of TMX against Sf9 cells by nearly 20%,and expand the insecticidal target of TMX to include Spodoptera frugiperda(the fall armyworm),with a 27.5%mortality increase at a concentration of 0.25 mg/mL.Moreover,the RNA-seq analysis demonstrated that the SPc could upregulate various transport-related genes,such as Rab,SORT1,CYTH,and PIKfive,for the enhanced cellular uptake of TMX.Furthermore,enhanced cell death in larvae treated with the TMX-SPc complex was observed through changes in the expression levels of death-related genes,such as Casp7,BIRC5,MSK1,and PGAM5.The SPc-based nano-delivery system improved the cellular uptake of TMX and expanded its insecticidal target by adjusting the expression levels of death-related genes.The current study mainly identified the transport and cell death genes related to nanocarrier-based insecticidal target expansion,which is beneficial for understanding the bioactivity enhancement of the nano-delivery system.

Toxoplasma gondii is a widespread parasite that may infect nearly all warm-blooded vertebrates.1 As an obligatory intracellular apicomplexan parasite,T.gondii has three different types of secretory organelles,including micronemes,rhoptries(ROP),and dense granules(GRAs),during invasion of host cells.2 Initially,the parasite replicates in a variety of host cell types as tachyzoites,especially in macrophages and dendritic cells(DCs).

Objective:Omicron,a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)variant,is responsible for numerous infections in China.This study investigates the association between the use of Seven-Flavor Herb Tea(SFHT)and the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection to develop precise and differentiated strategies for control of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).Methods:This case-control study was conducted at shelter hospitals and quarantine hotels in China.A total of 5348 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients were enrolled between April 1 and May 31,2022,while 2190 uninfected individuals served as healthy controls.Structured questionnaires were used to collect data on demographics,underlying diseases,vaccination status,and use of SFHT.Patients were propensity-score-matched using 1:1 nearest-neighbor matching of the logit of the propensity score.Subsequently,a conditional logistic regression model was used for data analysis.Results:Overall,7538 eligible subjects were recruited,with an average age of[45.54±16.94]years.The age of COVID-19 patients was significantly higher than that of uninfected individuals([48.25±17.48]years vs[38.92±13.41]years;t=22.437,P<0.001).A total of 2190 COVID-19 cases were matched with uninfected individuals at a 1:1 ratio.The use of SFHT(odds ratio=0.753,95%confidence interval:0.692,0.820)was associated with a lower risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to untreated individuals.Conclusion:Our findings suggest that taking SFHT reduces the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection.This is a useful study in the larger picture of COVID-19 management,but data from large-sample multi-center,randomized clinical trial are warranted to confirm the finding.

Three polymorphs(forms I,II and V)of isonicotinamide(INA)were mechanically flexible and exhibited one-dimensional(1 D)plasticity.Anisotropic intermolecular interactions contribute to the plasticity of single crystals:weak dispersive interactions between slip planes such as 1 D columns in forms I and II or 2 D layers in form V were stabilized by strong hydrogen bonds,allowing the layer or column's surface to glide smoothly without hindrance.The disparity of intermolecular interactions on plastic properties of INA polymorphic crystals was confirmed by energy framework analysis,nanoindentation tests and micro-Raman spectroscopy.The crystal which exhibits plastic property provides a promising application in pharmaceuticals and material sciences.

Third-order optical nonlinearities of three aryloxy substituted phthalocyanines are measured by femtosecond forward degenerate four-wave mixing technique at 800 nm.Ultrafast optical responses are observed and the magnitude of the second-order hyperpolarizabilitiesγof the phthalocyanines is measured to be as large as 10?31 esu.Due to the enhancement of J-aggregates,theγvalue of an aryloxy substituted zinc phthalocyanine in chloroform is approximately 2.2 times larger than that of the dye in methanol.Moreover,the morphologies of aryloxy substituted zinc phthalocyanine in chloroform exhibit that the nanowires with a diameter of 50–100 nm are connected to each other to form an indefinite network structure,while no aggregates are detected when the samples are prepared from a solution in the methanol.

Primate sanctuaries across Africa play a pivotal role in the rescue and rehabilitation of confiscated and rescued wild primates, many of whom have had extensive contact with humans prior to their arrival and throughout the rehabilitation process, heightening the risk of disease transmission. While tuberculosis is not naturally occurring in free-living chimpanzees, it has been extensively observed in captive primates that have been in close proximity to humans or other captive primates infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This case report delves into an outbreak of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis among juvenile chimpanzees within a sanctuary, detailing the associated diagnostic challenges and treatment approaches. The five cases had close contact with a caregiver infected with tuberculosis, subsequently transmitting the infection to other in-contact chimpanzees. Prolonged treatment, employing the human protocol of quadri-therapy (rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol), followed by bi-therapy (rifampicin and isoniazid), resulted in complete resolution for all five cases. These cases underscore the critical importance of maintaining high levels of biosecurity, implementing effective quarantine measures, and adhering to strict hygiene practices when working with non-human primates.

An AIE Star Polymer with Enhanced Co-Delivery of Drug and Gene for Synergistic Pest Control

Pesticides,as the most common means of pest managements,have caused a series of problems such as pest resistance and environmental pollution.Aggregation-induced emission(AIE)polymers exhibit great potential in biological applications because their fluorescent intensities significantly enhance in the aggregated state.In this paper,an AIE star polymer including a tetraphenyl ethylene(TPE)core and poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)arms is designed and further developed as a multi-functional nanocarrier for agricultural pest control.The nanocarrier shows high water solubility,good size stability and AIE imaging ability.Meanwhile,the twisted AIE core and positively charged polymer arms make the nanocarrier efficiently co-load dinotefuran(DIN)and dsRNA via hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions,respectively.The AIE star polymer displays low toxicity and high fluorescence traceability.As a result,the nanocarrier co-loading with DIN and dsRNA exhibits a highly synergistic insecticidal effect with higher pest mortality compared to the separate delivery of DIN and dsRNA.This study develops the AIE star polymer to improve the efficiency of co-delivery of drug and dsRNA and proposes a new strategy toward efficient and synergistic pest control.

BACKGROUND Following the development of the coronavirus disease-2019(COVID-19)pandemic in Italy,a strict lockdown was imposed from March 9 to May 5,2020.The risks of self-medication through alcohol or psychoactive substance abuse were increased,as well as the tendency to adopt pathological behaviors,such as gambling and internet addiction.AIM To evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated containment measures on craving in a group of patients suffering from substance use disorder and/or gambling disorder who were in treatment in outpatient units or in residency programs as inpatients.METHODS One hundred and fifty-three patients completed a structured questionnaire evaluating craving and other behaviors using a visual analogue scale(VAS).Forty-one subjects completed a pencil and paper questionnaire during the interview.The clinician provided an online questionnaire to 112 patients who had virtual assessments due to lockdown restrictions.Statistical analyses were performed using Statistica version 8.0.Quantitative parameters are presented as the mean±SD and qualitative parameters as number and percentage per class.The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to check for normality of distributions.Analysis of variance and Duncan post hoc test were employed to analyze differences among subgroup means.The associations between variables were measured using Pearson's correlation.A P value ofquarantine compared with inpatients(n=56;mean=2.8±2.8)in residential programs.Craving for tetrahydrocannabinol was the greatest(4.94,P<0.001)among various preferred substances.CONCLUSION The unexpected result of this study may be explained by a perceived lack of availability of substan

Longitudinal Changes in Liver Aminotransferases Predict Metabolic Syndrome in Chinese Patients with Nonviral Hepatitis

Objective This study explored the correlation of longitudinal changes in serum alanine aminotransferase （ALT） and aspartate aminotransferase （AST） levels with the incidence of metabolic syndrome （Mets） based on a dynamic health examination cohort. Methods A Mets-free dynamic cohort involving 4541 participants who underwent at least three health examinations from 2006 to 2011 was included in the study. Mets was defined according to the Chinese Medical Association Diabetes Branch definition that included hypertension, obesity, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia. Generalized estimating equation （GEE） model was used to analyze multivariate relative risk （RR） of repeated observations of ALT and AST in quartiles for Mets or its components according to gender. Results In all, 826 Mets cases were reported. Adjustment of relevant parameters indicated that time-varying changes in ALT and AST levels were positively associated with the incidence of Mets in a dose-response manner. Positive association between high ALT levels and fatty liver was much stronger than that between high AST levels and fatty liver, particularly in male participants. These associations were consistently observed in the following subgroups： participants with ALT and AST levels of 〈40 U/L, participants with of 〈25 kg/m2, and participants with non-fatty liver. Furthermore, participants with 2 Mets components at baseline showed lower multivariate adjusted RRs of ALT and AST for Mets than participants with 0-1 Mets component. Conclusion These results suggested that elevated serum ALT and AST levels were early biomarkers of Mets or its components.
