The Effects of Climate Change on the Planting Boundary and Potential Yield for Different Rice Cropping Systems in Southern China

Based on climate data from 254 meteorological stations, this study estimated the effects of climate change on rice planting boundaries and potential yields in the southern China during 1951-2010. The results indicated a signiifcant northward shift and westward expansion of northern boundaries for rice planting in the southern China. Compared with the period of 1951-1980, the average temperature during rice growing season in the period of 1981-2010 increased by 0.4＆#176;C, and the northern planting boundaries for single rice cropping system （SRCS）, early triple cropping rice system （ETCRS）, medium triple cropping rice system （MTCRS）, and late triple cropping rice system （LTCRS） moved northward by 10, 30, 52 and 66 km, respectively. In addition, compared with the period of 1951-1980, the suitable planting area for SRCS was reduced by 11%during the period of 1981-2010. However, the suitable planting areas for other rice cropping systems increased, with the increasing amplitude of 3, 8, and 10%for ETCRS, MTCRS and LTCRS, respectively. In general, the light and temperature potential productivity of rice decreased by 2.5%. Without considering the change of rice cultivars, the northern planting boundaries for different rice cropping systems showed a northward shift tendency. Climate change resulted in decrease of per unit area yield for SRCS and the annual average yields of ETCRS and LTCRS. Nevertheless, the overall rice production in the entire research area showed a decreasing trend even with the increasing trend of annual average yield for MTCRS.

Toxic cyanobacteria(TCB) are well-known worldwide for their adverse impacts on humans. Species compositions and seasonal variations of TCB in reservoirs depend on interactions between physical and chemical factors. This study was conducted to evaluate the water quality in the Aha Reservoir, Southwest China, focusing on cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins. Water samples were collected weekly or biweekly from May to September of 2015 and used to delineate temporal variations in density and distribution of toxic cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in the reservoir. Toxic cyanobacteria identified consisted of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Pseudanabaena limnetica, Cylindrospermopsis sp., and Microcystis sp., with Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Pseudanabaena limnetica being the most common and significant toxic genera. The total biomass of cyanobacteria was 17.0 mg/L. Identification and quantification of microcystin variants were conducted by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) using a system equipped with a photodiode array detector. Microcystin levels were between 0–3.0 μg/L, MC-RR was around 0–3.0 μg/L and MC-LR was approximately 0–0.9 μg/L. Overall, the results of this study indicate that the investigated reservoirs should be monitored regularly to minimize potential health risks to the human population.

Acid volatile sulfide and simultaneously extracted metals in superficial sediments from Baihua Lake, China

The bioavailability of five divalent cationic heavy metals （Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn and Ni） in 10 superficial sediment samples from Baihua Lake was assessed based on the molar ratio of simultaneously extracted metals （SEMs） to acid volatile sulfide （AVS）. Atomic absorption spectrometry （AAS） and X-ray powder diffraction （XRD） were used to determine the heavy metal concentrations and examine the mineralogy of the crystalline phases, respectively. The AVS loadings in sediments from Baihua Lake ranged from 64.30 to 350.08 ~rnol/g （dry weight）. The corresponding SEM levels for the sampling sites varied from 1.770 to 14.660 vrnol/g. The molar ratio of SEMs to AVS ranged from 0.014 to 0.084 with a mean value of 0.034. The XRD analysis also confirmed the presence of some metal sulfides in sediments from Baihua Lake. The SEMs/AVS ratios for all sampling sites were significantly lower than 1.0, indicating that AVS in the sediments was sufficient to bind the five heavy metals; thus, these heavy metals are currently not significantly bioavailable to benthic organisms. Comparing the SEMs results to published guideline values for metal toxicity to benthic organisms in sediments, however, suggests that Zn and Ni pose a risk at some sampling locations in Baihua Lake.

Modeling heterogeneous chemical processes on aerosol surface

To explore the possible impact of heterogeneous chemical processes on atmospheric trace components, a coupled box model including gas-phase chemical processes, aerosol thermodynamic equilibrium processes, and heterogeneous chemical processes on the surface of dust, black carbon （BC） and sea salt is set up to simulate the effects of heterogeneous chemistry on the aerosol surface, and analyze the primary factors affecting the heterogeneous processes. Results indicate that heterogeneous chemical processes on the aerosol surface in the atmosphere will affect the concentrations of trace gases such as H2O2, HO2, O3, NO2, NO3, HNO3 and SO2, and aerosols such as SO42-, NO3- and NH4＋. Sensitivity tests suggest that the magnitude of the impact of heterogeneous processes strongly depends on aerosol concentration and the surface uptake coefficients used in the box model. However, the impact of temperature on heterogeneous chemical processes is considerably less. The ＂renoxification＂ of HNO3 will affect the components of the troPosPhere such as nitrogen oxide and ozone.

TROPICAL CYCLONE DAMAGES IN CHINA UNDER GLOBAL WARMING

Over the past 25 years, an annual average of 6 to 7 tropical cyclones (TCs) made landfall onChina mainland and Hainan Island with an average intensity of 29.9 m/s at landfall and maintained at leasttropical storm intensity for 15.6 hours over land, leading to 505 deaths and 37 billion yuan in directeconomic loss, which accounted for 0.4% of the annual GDP of China. Although there was little change inthe overall landfall frequency, intensity at landfall and overland duration, the annual total direct economicloss increased significantly due to the rapid economic development over the past 25 years. Under globalwarming, the intensity of TCs that made landfall on Hainan decreased but the overland duration andfrequency of TCs that made landfall on Fujian and Zhejiang increased. At the national and provincial levels,the ratio of the direct economic loss to GDP and casualties caused by landfall tropical cyclones decreased,suggesting the effectiveness of disaster prevention and reduction in China.

Phytoplankton and environmental variables were measured monthly from July 2009 to August 2011 in the Maixi River from the estuary to Baihua Reservoir in the Maotiao River catchment, southwestern China, to understand phytoplankton community structure and environmental factors. The relationship between phytoplankton community structure and environmental factors including hydrological, meteorological, physical, and chemical variables were explored using multivariate analysis. A total of 81 taxa of phytoplankton were identified, which were mainly composed of chlorophyta, bacillariophyta, and cyanobacteria. The phytoplankton community was dominated by Pseudanabaena limnetica during summer and fall and by Cyclotella meneghiniana during winter and spring. The abundance of phytoplankton ranged from 0.24~ 104 cells/L to 33.45x 106 cells/L, with the minimum occurring during February 2010 and the maximum during July 2009. The phytoplankton community was dominated mainly by cyanobacteria from April to September, and by bacillariophyta and pyrrophyta from October to March. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that temperature, pH values, and orthophosphate were the most important driving factors regulating the composition and dynamics of the phytoplankton community in the estuary. Cyanobacteria and euglenophyta abundance and biomass were affected mainly by temperature and pH values, while most chlorophyta and bacillariophyta were influenced by the concentrations of nutrients.

Leaf-color mutants play an important role in the study of chlorophyll metabolism,chloroplast development,and photosynthesis *** this study,the yellow leaf 1(yl1)rice mutant was identified from the ethyl methane sulfonate-treated mutant progeny of Lailong,a glutinous japonica rice landrace cultivated in guizhou Province,*** showed that yl1 exhibited yellow leaves with decreased chlorophyll content throughout the growth *** development in the yl1 mutant was disrupted,and the grana lamellae was loosely packed and *** sequencing and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(qRT-PCR)analysis revealed that the chlorophyll synthesis-related genes OsCHLH,OsCHLM,OsCHLG,PORB,and YGL8,as well as the chloroplast development-related genes FtsZ,OsRpoTp,and RbcL,were down-regulated in the yl1 *** analysis revealed that the yellow leaf phenotype of yl1 was controlled by recessive nuclear *** employing the MutMap method,the mutation responsible for the phenotype was mapped to a 6.17 Mb region between 17.34 and 23.51 Mb on chromosome *** non-synonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)located in the gene locus LOC_Os03g31210 and LOC_Os03g36760 were detected in this *** two SNPs were further confirmed by PCR and Sanger *** expression patterns of the two candidate genes indicated that LOC_Os03g36760 showed greater potential for functional *** protein localization revealed that the encoded product of LOC_Os03g36760 was localized in the nucleus,cytoplasm,and plasma *** results will be useful for further characterization and cloning of the yl1 gene,and for research on the molecular mechanisms controlling biogenesis and chloroplast biochemical processes.
