This study aims to provide a brief overview of the history and development of global health education(GHE)as academic degree programs worldwide,and to identify GHE’s development opportunities and obstacles in *** is a state-of-the-art review of published and unpublished information that described and evaluated disciplinary development of global health degree programs worldwide,written in English,and published or shared between 1990 and *** were derived from official websites of leading global health institutions,like“Google Scholar”,“PubMed”,and unpublished information such as presentation files and unpublished manuscripts collected from knowledgeable leaders in the *** retrieved and reviewed a total of 35 articles and a large amount of unpublished information or sources on the *** health emerged as a new discipline around the end of the last millennium and proliferated in the last two decades in developed nations,especially the United States and the United *** development of China’s GHE programs was built on China’s increasing engagement in global health affairs and *** 2012,Wuhan University established the first official global health department in *** universities such as Peking University and Duke Kunshan University subsequently set up departments or programs to offer undergraduate and postgraduate majors and *** first school-level global health unit was established in Shanghai in *** Consortium of Chinese Universities for global health(CCUGH)grew from 10 founding members in 2013 to 25 in *** desirable attributes“unique”to students majoring in global health include global-mindedness,health interests,compassion,intercultural sensitivity,and adventurous *** from GHE programs have a diverse set of career choices spanning research,government,not-for-profit,and private sector *** identified a number of strengths,weaknesses,opportunities,and threats to the future develo

Background Tripartite partnership,compared with the bilateral model,is envisioned as an opportunity to foster stronger and more trusting partnerships[1].However,China has historically been characterized as principally reliant on bilateral engagement in global health[2].e China-Tanzania Cooperation Project on Malaria Control was conducted by National Institute of Parasitic Diseases at China CDC and Chinese Center for Tropical Diseases Research,Ifakara health Institute in Tanzania and funding agencies from 2015 to 2022,with an aim to explore the applicability of Chinese experience on malaria control to reduce malaria disease burden in the local context of *** the tripartite project funded by the former UK Department for International development(DFID)and later the Bill&Melinda Gates Foundation(BMGF).

Ozone exposure and cardiovascular disease: A narrative review of epidemiology evidence and underlying mechanisms

Ozone (O3) poses a significant global public health concern as it exerts adverse effects on human cardiovascular health. Nevertheless, there remains a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the relationships between O3 exposure and the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), as well as the underlying biological mechanisms. To address this knowledge gap, this narrative review meticulously summarizes the existing epidemiological evidence, susceptibility, and potential underlying biological mechanisms linking O3 exposure with CVD. An increasing body of epidemiological studies has demonstrated that O3 exposure heightens the incidence and mortality of CVD, including specific subtypes such as ischemic heart disease, hypertension, and heart failure. Certain populations display heightened vulnerability to these effects, particularly children, the elderly, obese individuals, and those with pre-existing conditions. Proposed biological mechanisms suggest that O3 exposure engenders respiratory and systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, disruption of autonomic nervous and neuroendocrine systems, as well as impairment of coagulation function, glucose, and lipid metabolism. Ultimately, these processes contribute to vascular dysfunction and the development of CVD. However, some studies have reported the absence of associations between O3 and CVD, or even potentially protective effects of O3. Inconsistencies among the literature may be attributed to inaccurate assessment of personal O3 exposure levels in epidemiologic studies, as well as confounding effects stemming from co-pollutants and temperature. Consequently, our findings underscore the imperative for further research, including the development of reliable methodologies for assessing personal O3 exposure, exploration of O3 exposure's impact on cardiovascular health, and elucidation of its biological mechanisms.

Hypertension(HT)is a major risk factor for cardiovascular ***üppel-like factors(KLFs)are important transcription factors in *** have reported that KLF4 and KLF5 are correlated with several cardiovascular diseases,but population-based studies on associations between HT and KLF4 or KLF5 have rarely been ***,the current study investigated the associations of genetic variants and m RNA expression levels of KLF4 and KLF5 with HT,as well as the effects of antihypertensive drugs on the expression levels of these *** associations of one single-nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)in KLF4 and three SNPs in KLF5with HT were analyzed using a combination of case-control and cohort *** study populations were selected from a community-based cohort in four regions of Jiangsu *** risks of HT were estimated through logistic and Cox regression *** addition,m RNA expression levels of KLF4 and KLF5 were detected in 246 controls and 385 HT cases selected from the aforementioned *** the HT cases,263were not taking antihypertensive drugs[AHD(-)]and 122 were taking antihypertensive drugs[AHD(+)].In the case-control study,SNP rs9573096(C>T)in KLF5 was significantly associated with an increased risk of HT in the additive model(adjusted odds ratio[OR],1.106;95%confidence interval[CI],1.009 to 1.212).In the cohort study of the normotensive population,rs9573096 in KLF5 was also significantly associated with an increased risk of HT in the additive model(adjusted hazards ratio[HR],1.199;95%CI,1.070 to 1.344).KLF4 and KLF5m RNA expression levels were significantly higher in the AHD(-)group than in the control group(P<0.05),but lower in the AHD(+)group than in the AHD(-)group(P<0.05).The current study demonstrated the associations of KLF4 and KLF5 genetic variants with hypertension,as well as the association of the indicative variations in m RNA expression levels of KLF4 and KLF5 with the risk of hypertension and antihypertensive

Objective The relationship between fish consumption and stroke is inconsistent,and it is uncertain whether this association varies across predicted stroke *** A cohort study comprising 95,800 participants from the Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China project was conducted.A standardized questionnaire was used to collect data on fish *** were stratified into low-and moderate-to-high-risk categories based on their 10-year stroke risk prediction *** ratios(HRs)and 95%confidence intervals(CIs)were estimated using Cox proportional hazard models and additive interaction by relative excess risk due to interaction(RERI),attributable proportion(AP),and synergy index(SI).Results During 703,869 person-years of follow-up,2,773 incident stroke events were *** fish consumption was associated with a lower risk of stroke,particularly among moderate-to-high-risk individuals(HR=0.53,95%CI:0.47-0.60)than among low-risk individuals(HR=0.64,95%CI:0.49-0.85).A significant additive interaction between fish consumption and predicted stroke risk was observed(RERI=4.08,95%CI:2.80-5.36;SI=1.64,95%CI:1.42-1.89;AP=0.36,95%CI:0.28-0.43).Conclusion Higher fish consumption was associated with a lower risk of stroke,and this beneficial association was more pronounced in individuals with moderate-to-high stroke risk.

Birds caught in spider webs in Asia

A recent global review of birds caught in spider webs reported only three Asian cases. Given this surprisingly low number, I made a concerted effort to obtain additional Asian cases from the literature, the internet, and field workers. I present a total of 56 Asian cases which pertain to 33 bird species. As in the global dataset, mostly small bird species were caught in spider webs, with a mean body mass of 17.5 g and a mean wing chord length of 73.1 mm. Conse?quently, birds with a body mass >30 g were very rarely caught. This Asian review corroborates the global review that smaller birds are more likely to be caught and that Nephila spiders are most likely to be the predators. Continuous monitoring of spider webs is recommended to ascertain the frequency of these events.
