Economic and scale prediction of CO_(2)capture,utilization and storage technologies in China

In response to the lack of global quantitative research on the potential and scale prediction of CO_(2) capture,utilization and storage(CCUS)in China under the background of carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals,this study predicts the future economic costs of different links of ccUS technologies and the carbon capture needs of different industries in the scenario of fossil energy continuation.Based on the CO_(2) utilization and storage potential and spatial distribution in China,a cost-scale calculation model for different regions in China in 206o is constructed to predict the whole-process economic cost and its corresponding scale potential of CCUs.The results show that a local+remote storage mode is preferred,together with a local utilization mode,to meet China's 27×10^(8)t/a CO_(2) emission reduction demand under the scenario of fossil energy continuation.Specifically,about 5×10^(8) t CO_(2) emission is reduced by capture utilization,and the whole-process cost is about-1400-200 RMB/t;about 22×10^(8) t CO_(2) emission is reduced by capture storage,and the whole-process cost is about 200-450 RMB/t.According to the model results,it is recommended to develop the chemical utilization industry based on P2X(Power to X,where X is raw material)technology,construct the CcUs industrial cluster,and explore a multi-party win-win cooperation mode.A scheme of national trunk pipeline network connecting areas connecting intensive emission reduction demand areas and target storage areas is suggested.The emission reduction cost of thermal power based on CCUS is calculated to be 0.16 RMB/(kW.h).

Building a New-Type Power System to Promote Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality in the Power Industry in China

Power industry is the largest carbon emission sector in China.Therefore,this industry will play an important role in achieving the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals( "dual carbon " goals)for the whole society.For this purpose,it is critical to balance four relationships,i.***.relationship between carbon mitigation and energy security,carbon peaking in the short term and carbon neutrality in the long term,the coordinated carbon mitigation in power industry and other industries,and technical feasibility and economic efficiency.This paper proposes the China’s energy interconnection scenario to promote carbon peaking and carbon neutrality of the society,which can be divided into three stages,i.***.peaking carbon emissions before 2030,rapid emission reduction during 2030-2050,and comprehensive carbon neutrality before 2060.It is expected that the power system will achieve zero emissions before other industries and contribute negative emissions afterwards,providing emission space for carbon neutrality in other industries across the society.Looking into the future,China’s electricity demand will continue to grow.Clean energy will become the main power source,the use of coal-fired power will be gradually reduced,and gas-fired power will undertake the function of peak-load regulation.Faster progress will be made in forming an overall grid pattern with ultra-high voltage(UHV) grid as the backbone and featuring "west-to-east and north-to-south power transmission,a balanced energy mix,and transnational power interconnection." Finally,this paper discusses a new-type of power system characterized by a high proportion of electricity generated from clean energy,high ratio of electric and electronic equipment,and a high proportion of power transmission and reception,together with summer and winter high load periods,and points out the challenges faced by the new-type power system with a high proportion of renewable energy sources in terms of flexibility,safety,and economic efficiency,and proposes corresponding policy recommen

Study of future power interconnection scheme in ASEAN

The current energy supply trajectory in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN)region is not sustainable.Factors such as rising standards of living and demographic patterns,including population growth,lead to continuous increase in power demand,which is difficult to meet using limited fossil fuel resources.Thus,a transition toward clean energy sources is needed in the region.While ASEAN member countries are rich in clean energy resources,such resources are located far from demand centers;thus,allocation of clean energy is necessary to increase its utilization.In this study,power demand is forecasted using a combination of prediction methods.A model to evaluate the installed capacity and power exchange potential is proposed to deal with mismatch between the location of the clean energy base and the load center.Furthermore,the concept of cross-regional allocation of clean energy between the ASEAN region,China,and South Asia is presented.A power interconnection scheme among the ASEAN member countries as well as neighboring countries is proposed based on the power exchange potential.The proposed grid interconnection scheme contributes to the utilization of clean energy in the ASEAN region,increasing the proportion of clean energy in the generation mix,which ensures that the region becomes a sustainable and resilient society with a clean and low carbon development route.Furthermore,the proposed power interconnection scheme will generate valuable economic,social,environmental,and resource allocation benefits.

Application and research of global grid database design based on geographic information

energy crisis and climate change have become two seriously concerned issues universally. As a feasible solution, global energy interconnection(GEI) has been highly praised and positively responded by the international community once proposed by China. From strategic conception to implementation, GEI development has entered a new phase of joint action now. Gathering and building a global grid database is a prerequisite for conducting research on GEI. Based on the requirement of global grid data management and application, combining with big data and geographic information technology, this paper studies the global grid data acquisition and analysis process, sorts out and designs the global grid database structure supporting GEI research, and builds a global grid database system.

Review of trans-Mediterranean power grid interconnection:a regional roadmap towards energy sector decarbonization

Climate change is becoming an important issue in all fields of infrastructure development.Electricity plays a core role in the decarbonized energy system’s path to a regional zero-emission pattern.A well-built trans-Mediterranean backbone grid can hedge the profound evolution of regional power generation,transmission,and consumption.To date,only Turkey and the Maghreb countries(i.e.,Morocco,Algeria,and Tunisia)are connected with the Continental European Synchronous Area.Other south-and east-shore countries have insufficient interconnection infrastructures and synchronization difficulties that have proven to be major hurdles to the implementation of large-scale solar and wind projects and achievement of climate goals.This study analyzes the current trans-boundary grid interconnections and power and carbon emission portfolios in the Mediterranean region.To align with the recently launched new climate target‘Fit for 55’program and the accelerated large-scale renewables target,a holistic review of projected trans-Mediterranean grids and their market,technical,and financial obstacles of implementation was conducted.For south-and east-shore countries,major legal and regulatory barriers encompassing non-liberalized market structure,regulation gaps of taxation and transmission tariffs,and the private sector’s access rights need to be removed.Enhancement of domestic grids,substations,and harmonized grid codes and frequency,voltage,and communication technology standards among all trans-Mediterranean countries are physical prerequisites for implementing the Trans-Mediterranean Electricity Market.In addition,the mobilization of capital instruments along with private and international investments is indispensable for the realization of supranational transmission projects.As the final section of the decarbonization roadmap,the development of electric appliances,equipment,and vehicles with higher efficiency is inevitable in the decarbonized building,transportation,and industry sectors.

Poverty Reduction Effect of Adaptation to Climate Change: Empirical Evidence from China's Loess Plateau and Qinba Mountains

Based on the micro-survey data of rural households in China’s Loess Plateau and Qinba Mountains, this paper empirically examines the poverty reduction effect and mechanism of adaptation to climate change. The research conclusions show that the adaptation actions can significantly reduce the poverty vulnerability of farmers, especially the future incidence of poverty in agricultural or poor households to a greater extent, which is characterized by a “pro-poor” effect.Adaptation actions can reduce poverty from two aspects: decreasing the expected income volatility(loss mitigation effect) and increasing the expected income level(opportunity effect), and the former is stronger than the latter. In the post-2020 period, China should enhance policy support in rural areas to adapt to climate change, improve the resilience of farmers’ livelihoods and climate change resilience of rural areas, and promote sustainable poverty reduction.

Recent developments in HVDC transmission systems to support renewable energy integration

The demands for massive renewable energy integration, passive network power supply, and global energy interconnection have all gradually increased, posing new challenges for high voltage direct current(HVDC) power transmission systems, including more complex topology and increased diversity of bipolar HVDC transmission. This study proposes that these two factors have led to new requirements for HVDC control strategies. Moreover, due to the diverse applications of HVDC transmission technology, each station in the system has different requirements. Furthermore, the topology of the AC-DC converter is being continuously developed, revealing a trend towards hybrid converter stations.

Electric interconnection is an essential trend for future large-scale development and utilization of renewable energy.China has proposed the concept of global energy interconnection to realize the clean utilization of energy through the interconnection of power grids and optimize the allocation of global energy resources.This study proposes the Kazakhstan-China-Republic of Korea networking scheme,analyzing the characteristics of power supply and demand in these countries.Based on the regional economic analysis and power development,four interconnection schemes are proposed utilizing UHVDC technology.Accordingly,existing problems and favorable factors are fully considered.The investment analysis of±1100 kV and±800 kV lines,configuration scheme of the converter station,and investment estimation of four interconnection schemes are given.

Full electromagnetic transient simulation for large power systems

For building global energy interconnection(GEI), it is necessary to implement new breakthroughs on largepower system simulation. Key routes for implementing full electromagnetic transient simulation of large-power systems are described in this paper, and a top framework is designed. A combination of the new large time step algorithm and the traditional small-time step algorithm is proposed where both parts A and B are calculated independently. The method for integrating the Norton equivalence of the power electronic system to the entire power grid is proposed. A two-level gird division structure is proposed, which executes a multi-rate parallel calculation among subsystems and element parallel calculation in each subsystem. The initialization method of combining load flow derivation and automatic trial-and-error launching is introduced. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated through a practical power grid example, which lays a foundation for further research.
