In this opinion paper,we,a group of scientists from environmental-,geo-,ocean-and information science,argue visual data exploration should become a common analytics approach in Earth system science due to its potential for analysis and interpretation of large and complex spatio-temporal *** discuss the challenges that appear such as synthesis of heterogeneous data from various sources,reducing the amount of information and facilitating multidisciplinary,collaborative *** argue that to fully exploit the potential of visual data exploration,several bottlenecks and challenges have to be addressed:providing an efficient data management and an integrated modular workflow,developing and applying suitable visual exploration concepts and methods with the help of effective and tailored tools as well as generating and raising the awareness of visual data exploration and *** are convinced visual data exploration is worth the effort since it significantly facilitates insight into environmental data and derivation of knowledge from it.

The Wnt Pathway Target Gene CCND1 Changes Mitochondrial Localization and Decreases Mitochondrial Activity in Colorectal Cancer Cell Line SW480

Mutations leading to constitutive activation of the Wnt pathway and its target genes are frequently observed in cancer. The Wnt pathway promotes cell proliferation and increasing evidence supports its role also in cancer cell metabolism. This study aims to elucidate the role of the Wnt/β-catenin target gene CCND1 in these processes in colorectal cancer. We analyzed whether knock-down of CCND1 affects cell cycle progression and energy metabolism in a colorectal cancer cell line. Down-regulation of CCND1 led to retardation of the cell cycle. The proportion of cells in the G0 phase increased, while the amount of cells in the S- and G2/M phase decreased. Interestingly, knock-down of CCND1 changed the perinuclear localization of mitochondria into a homogeneous distribution within the cytosol. In addition CCND1 knock-down led to an increase of the intracellular ATP level indicating that cyclin D1 reduced mitochondrial activity. Our findings suggest that in addition to its role in cell cycle regulation, the Wnt target gene CCND1 regulates mitochondrial localization and inhibits mitochondrial activity in colorectal cancer cells.

Smoking prevalence in the area of responsibility of the german Ministry of Defense——results of the employee survey in the context of occupational health management

Background:Tobacco use,correlated with reduced physical fitness,is one of the leading causes of avoidable death *** increases the risk of dementia and can shorten the lifespan by 10 *** the german Armed Forces(Bundeswehr),figures on smoking behavior have not been comprehensively *** study analyzes current data in a large sample from this ***:Based on an employee survey as part of the Occupational Health management System,data on smoking behavior from 13,326 participants were analyzed in relation to age,gender,professional status,education level and membership in military operational units versus other ***:Smoking behavior varied significantly(Polder),gender,professional status,military agency membership status,and education level(the lower the education level,the higher the smoking rates).With the exception of the downward trend in smoking behavior with increasing age among civilian employees,these results were all significant(Pgerman *** on gender,they generally show values that are slightly above those of the german *** well-known trend in the general population of decreasing smoking prevalence with increasing age is also seen in this ***,there are considerable differences in the smoking prevalence among individual subgroups(professional status,agency,gender,education level).The data show that particular young soldiers in the armed forces should be the target group for further preventive measures.

Background:Forests perform various important ecosystem functions that contribute to ecosystem *** many parts of the world,forest management has shifted from a focus on timber production to multi-purpose forestry,combining timber production with the supply of other forest ecosystem ***,it is unclear which forest types provide which ecosystem services and to what extent forests primarily managed for timber already supply multiple ecosystem *** on a comprehensive dataset collected across 150 forest plots in three regions differing in management intensity and species composition,we develop models to predict the potential supply of 13 ecosystem *** use those models to assess the level of multifunctionality of managed forests at the national level using national forest inventory ***:Looking at the potential supply of ecosystem services,we found trade-offs(*** both bark beetle control or dung decomposition and both productivity or soil carbon stocks)as well as synergies(*** temperature regulation,carbon storage and culturally interesting plants)across the 53 most dominant forest types in *** single forest type provided all ecosystem services *** ecosystem services showed comparable levels across forest types(*** or richness of saprotrophs),while others varied strongly,depending on forest structural attributes(*** availability or cover of edible plants)or tree species composition(*** nitrification activity).Variability in potential supply of ecosystem services was only to a lesser extent driven by environmental ***,the geographic variation in ecosystem function supply across germany was closely linked with the distribution of main tree ***:Our results show that forest multifunctionality is limited to subsets of ecosystem *** importance of tree species composition highlights that a lack of multifunctionality at the stand lev
