A design of polarization-maintaining retro-reflectors （PMRRs） for folded-path applications is proposed and analyzed. The prism-based scheme enables the output light, which is parallel to the input, to have an identical state of polarization. The principle of the design is theoretically verified, and the related error is analyzed due to possible manufacturing imperfection. The maximum spatial angle error is ±2.75°. The effect on the extinction ratio and insertion loss is also discussed, which further proves the design＇s feasibility in practical applications.

LIDAR is the first generation of laser remote sensing developed for detection of gas molecule in atmosphere. LIDAR is the abbreviated word for laser radar (laser light detection and ranging). It combines advantages of lasers ability to detect atoms and molecules and radars ability for remote sensing. The advance of technologies: tunable solid state laser (Ti sapphire, OPO etc), optical fiber, photonics imaging technique and last but not least computational techniques, have promoted the development of new types of laser remote sensors capable of detecting toxic and radioactive chemicals and metals not in gas form and not exposed in air but under ground water and subsurface soil. The high power laser is used to vaporize the target material and generate plasma. Optical fiber is often used to delivery the laser beam and to collect the emission for imaging. The combination of spectroscopy with advanced photonics imaging techniques can study both the chemical components of sample in situ under ambient conditions and spatial distribution of different chemicals in remote operation without requiring sample preparation or extensive sample handing. These new developments have greatly enlarged the horizon of traditional capability of remote sensing.

Ultra-low phase noise performance is required for frequency agile local oscillators, which are the core for high resolution imagers, spectrum analyzers, and high speed data communications. A forced opto-electronic oscillator （OEO） benefits from frequency stabilization techniques for realizing a clean and low phase noise source at micro- wave and millimeter wave frequencies. Forced oscillation techniques of self-injection locking and self-phase lock loop are combined to provide an ultra-low oscillator phase noise both close-in and far-away from the carrier frequency, while a tunable yttrium iron garnet microwave filter combined with a wavelength tuned transversal filter are employed to implement both coarse and fine frequency tuning for a tunable X-band OEO. A phase noise of -137 dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 10 kHz is achieved covering the frequencies of 9 to 11 GHz with a fine frequency tuning resolution of 44 Hz/pm and coarse tuning of 25 MHz/mA. Moreover, the long term stability of the output signal is tested, and a maximum frequency drift of 2 kHz is measured within 60 min for the X-band synthesizer.

Digital radiography （DR） and whole-body fluorescent optical imaging （WFOI） have been widely applied in the field of molecular imaging, with the advantages in tissues and functional imaging. The integration of them contributes to the development and discovery of medicine. We introduce an equipment, performance of which is better than that of another molecular imaging system manufactured by Kodak corp. It can take real-time small animal imaging in vivo, with lower cost and shorter development cycle on the LabVIEW platform. At last, a paradigm experiment on a nude mouse with green fluorescent protein （GFP） transgenic tumor is given to present a real-time DR-WFOI fusion simultaneous image.

Regenerated polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings with thermal treatment for high temperature measurements

Historically, due to the high cost of optical devices, fiber-optics sensor systems were only employed in niche areas where conventional electrical sensors are not suitable. This scenario changed dramatically in the last few years following the explosion of the Internet which caused the rapid expansion of the optical fiber telecommunication industry and substantially driven down the cost of optical components. In recent years, fiber-optic sensors and particularly fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have attracted a lot of interests and are being used in numerous applications. We have conducted several field trials of FBG sensors for railway applications and structural monitoring. About 30 FBG sensors were installed on the rail tracks of Kowloon-Canton Railway corp. for train identification and speed measurements and the results obtained show that FBG sensors exhibit very good performance and could play a major role in the realization of "Smart Railway". FBG sensors were also installed on Hong Kong's landmark TsingMa Bridge, which is the world longest suspension bridge (2.2 km) that carries both trains and regular road traffic. The trials were carried out with a high-speed (up to 20 kHz) interrogation system based on CCD and also with a interrogation unit that based on scanning optical filter (up to 70 Hz). Forty FBGs sensors were divided into 3 arrays and installed on different parts of the bridge (suspension cable, rocker bearing and truss girders). The objectives of the field trial on the TsingMa Bridge are to monitor the strain of different parts of the bridge under railway load and highway load, and to compare the FBG sensors' performance with conventional resistive strain gauges already installed on the bridge. The measured results show that excellent agreement was obtained between the 2 types of sensors.

We report for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, regenerated polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings(RPOFBGs) in ZEONEX-based polymer optical fibers(POFs). The regeneration temperature can be adjusted using a heat treatment process on the POF before FBG inscription, enabling a scalable improvement of the thermal stability of the RPOFBGs. Thermal sustainability of the RPOFBGs at high temperature conditions was investigated for their prolonged use in diverse environments. Furthermore, these RPOFBGs can withstand strain levels up to 2.8% while maintaining a good linearity, even at temperature of 110℃. The RPOFBGs are capable of short-term operation at elevated temperatures of up to 132℃, which is the standard temperature for steam sterilization with at least a 4 min exposure period. The distinction in the morphologies of the two grades of ZEONEX(E48R and 480R, ZEON corp.) used to fabricate the optical fiber together with the characteristics of UV irradiated and regenerated gratings is explained using micro-Raman spectroscopy. Collectively, these findings provide new heights for long-term operation of POF Bragg gratings(POFBGs) at elevated temperature environments and would be applicable to a wide range of disciplines.
