Epidemiology and Clinical Characteristics of the First 500 Positive Cases of COVID-19. A Multicenter Retrospective Study across the najran Region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA)

Introduction: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a viral infection that was first reported in Wuhan, China on 31 December 2019. This study aimed to clarify the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of 500 first COVID-19 in the Najran region, Saudi Arabia. Material and Methods: A multi-center retrospective study design was employed to study the first 500 confirmed COVID-19 positive cases in Najran province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Data were collected from 1 March 2020 until 1 July 2020 and provided by the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) department from the hospitals. Included cases were confirmed using real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Demographic, vital signs, symptoms, incubation period, travel or exposure history medical history, and comorbidities were collected. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the association between potential risk factors associated with symptoms occurrence of COVID-19. Results: The median age of 500 COVID-19 patients was 31 years;333 (66.6%) males. A total of 34 (6.8%) were healthcare Workers (HCWs). Out of the 500 patients, 180 (36%) had at least one comorbid disease. The most common symptoms on admission were fever 281 (56.2%), cough 266 (53.2%), shortness of breath 166 (33.2%), and malaise 113 (22.6%). Most of the patients presented with mild disease severity 310 (62%). Nationality, age, and Diabetes Miletus (DM) were independently and significantly associated with being symptomatic (P β = 2.968, CI = 2.002 - 4.400, P = 0.0010). For every 1 year increase in age, the risk of being symptomatic increased by 5.8% (β = 1.045, CI = 1.033 - 1.058, P = 0.001). Emotionally Intelligent among Nurses and Nursing Managers: An Integrative Review

Background: Emotionally intelligent managers are able to use, understand and manage their feelings in a way that benefits themselves and others. Aim: The main aim of this integrative review is to assess the level of emotional intelligence among nurse managers within current literature and previous studies. Materials and Methods: An integrative review was conducted;a search was performed in the electronic databases (ISI, SCOPUS, Ovid, Proquest, Google Scholar, PubMed, and SID) for articles, which were published in the period 2002-2020 in English. Nine studies met the inclusion criteria. Results: Of 840 articles, and after exclusion criteria;Nine articles only were met the inclusion criteria. Of these eight studies, the majority found an average level of emotional intelligence among nurse managers and nurses. Conclusion: It is evident that the nurses are able to experience the ability to identify and experience a wide range of emotions in everyday practice. Despite the satisfactory level of emotional intelligence among nurses, they have to improve their skills to achieve maximum level of these skills of emotional intelligence.

An Assessment of healthcare Workers Knowledge about COVID-19

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by a viral infection and considered the third coronavirus emerging among human beings over the past two decades. healthcare Workers (HCWs) are at high risk of acquiring this serious infection during providing care to patients. Therefore, it’s crucial to assess the knowledge of the HCWs about COVID-19. Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted on HCWs working at public hospitals and Primary healthcare (PHC) centers in the najran region, KSA to evaluate the staff’s knowledge toward COVID-19. The questionnaire consisted of two parts, the first part included the demographic data, and the second part involved questions related to the COVID-19. Results: 451 HCWs participated in this study and the median of overall knowledge score was 67%. Most HCWs properly identified symptoms (82.9%), mode of transmission (78.5%), the incubation period (96.4%), the way of preventing the infection (91.5%), the COVID-19 is not same as MERS-CoV (74.3%) and availability of a vaccine against the COVID-19 (82%). However, HCWs were less likely to identify the source of COVID-19 when it was discovered in China (22.5%), the mortality rate (44.6%), and the presence of treatment (32.1%). Overall knowledge score was statistically significantly associated with profession (P = 0.034), educational level (P = 0.033), and availability of the infection control in the workplace (P = 0.006). Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrated an intermediate level of knowledge of HCWs about COVID-19. Intervention programs are urgently needed to raise the knowledge of HCWs about this global public health issue.

Nurses’ Knowledge and Attitude Regarding Evidence-Based Practice: An Integrative Review

Background: As a result of its influence on nurses’ knowledge and practice, evidence-based practice (EBP) has gained prominence in the nursing profession. Therefore, evidence-based practice (EBP) is increasingly acknowledged as a critical component of improving the quality of healthcare and nursing care services, as well as achieving patient care excellence. Aim: One of the primary objectives of this review is to consolidate the existing research on nurses’ understanding of evidence-based practice, attitudes toward it, and practices related to it. Methods: The following databases from 2012 to 2021 have been searched such as: Cochrane Collaboration, MEDLINE, AVOID, CINAHL, EMBASE, Science Direct, ASSIA, Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed and JSTOR. Only cohort, case-control and randomized controlled trials studies with full text in English were eligible. Results: Only eight articles were found to meet the inclusion criteria out of 2155 total articles after the exclusion criteria were applied. The majority of these eight researches discovered a favourable attitude about EBP as well as a low level of expertise. Conclusion: The majority of nurses have a good attitude toward their job, but most are uninformed of the significance of EBP in their profession. In order to recognize and compare the components that may impact knowledge, attitude, and practices of EBP throughout the world in order to discover similarities that may assist global strategies for the transfer of research results to nursing, additional research on this topic is required to recognize and compare the components that may impact knowledge, attitude, and practices of EBP throughout the world in order to discover similarities that may assist global strategies for the transfer of research results to nursing.

Impacts of urban headwater disturbances on downstream sediment loading where streamside management zones for forest harvesting activities are present downstream

Watershed disturbances caused by land use/land cover(LU/LC) change, intensive forestry practices, and other forms of watershed disturbance are known to negatively affect water quality, if best management practices(BMPs) are not present. Disturbances near or around headwaters where BMPs are absent or are inadequate may impact downstream water quality and stream ecology regardless of the presence of downstream BMPs. In this study, the recovery of two small forest-dominated watersheds(Ww and Ew) in Auburn, Alabama, USA, was monitored 6-years after a partial clearcut was done. The streamside management zone(SMZ) in Ww was also partially harvested shortly after the partial clearcut to improve its sediment trapping effectiveness over the long-term. The hydrology and sediment transport in these watersheds were expected to stabilize over this period, however, new disturbances in the headwaters of both watersheds changed the watershed dynamics. Streamflow and sediment load were examined over a15-month period from February 2014 to May 2015. The clearcut in Ww and Ew, and the partially harvested SMZ in Ww seemed to have recovered; however, substantial amount of sediment load were measured across all monitoring sites in both watersheds as a result of upstream disturbances. This study emphasizes the necessity of watershed management as a whole, and the importance of BMP applications within the entire watershed. It also highlights the fact that watershed management and BMP implementation is a dynamic process, thus, strategies and techniques need to be continuously adapted in response to environmental changes.

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, with breast cancer being the most common (2.26 million new cases and 685,000 deaths). In Saudi Arabia, breast cancer ranked the first among females in 2014, accounting for 15.9% of all cancers reported among Saudi nationals and 28.7% of all cancers reported among females of all ages. Early detection of breast cancer could decrease the risks, have a better prognosis, and have better outcomes/more successful treatments. Prevalence of breast cancer reached more than 25% of all diagnosed cancer in the kingdom among women. Aim: This study aims to assess the knowledge and performance of women attending primary care centers about breast self-examination and mammogram screening for prevention and early detection of breast cancer in Abha city primary healthcare centers, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Research Method: cross sectional design was conducted by using questionnaire, which was distributed to primary care center nurses. The collected data was statistically analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 25. Results: The study found that participants had poor awareness and knowledge about breast self-examination, risk factors for breast cancer, and trends and practices in early diagnosis of breast cancer. Conclusion and Recommendations: It recommends increasing awareness campaigns and providing educational programs to improve knowledge and practices.

The low survival rate of Kidney renal clear cell carcinoma(KIRC)patients is largely attributed to cisplatin *** than focusing solely on individual proteins,exploring protein-protein interactions could offer greater insight into drug *** this end,a series of in silico and in vitro experiments were conducted to identify hub genes in the intricate network of cisplatin resistance-related genes in KIRC *** genes involved in cisplatin resistance across KIRC were retrieved from the National Center for Biotechnology Information(NCBI)database using search terms as“Kidney renal clear cell carcinoma”and“Cisplatin resistance”.The genes retrieved were analyzed for hub gene identification using the STRING database and Cytoscape *** and promoter methylation profiling of the hub genes was done using UALCAN,GEPIA,OncoDB,and HPA ***,survival,functional enrichment,immune cell infiltration,and drug prediction analyses of the hub genes were performed using the cBioPortal,GEPIA,GSEA,TIMER,and DrugBank ***,expression and methylation levels of the hub genes were validated on two cisplatin-resistant RCC cell lines(786-O and A-498)and a normal renal tubular epithelial cell line(HK-2)using two high throughput techniques,including targeted bisulfite sequencing(bisulfite-seq)and RT-qPCR.A total of 124 genes were identified as being associated with cisplatin resistance in *** of these genes,MCL1,IGF1R,CCND1,and PTEN were identified as hub genes and were found to have significant(p<0.05)variations in their mRNA and protein expressions and effects on the overall survival(OS)of the KIRC ***,an aberrant promoter methylation pattern was found to be associated with the dysregulation of the hub *** addition to this,hub genes were also linked with different cisplatin resistance-causing ***,hub genes can be targeted with Alvocidib,Estradiol,Tretinoin,Capsaicin,Dronabinol,Metribolone,Calcitriol

An Epidemiological Study on Influenza A(H1N1) in Makkah

The flu pandemic is a global outbreak of a new strain of influenza A virus subtype H1N1, termed Pandemic H1N1/09 virus by the World health Organization (WHO), which was first identified in April 2009. The disease has also been termed novel Influenza A(H1N1) and 2009 H1N1 flu by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and is commonly known as swine flu. The main strain of the virus has been termed A/California/07/2009 (H1N1) by scientists. This study was conducted to describe the epidemiology of influenza A(H1N1) infections in KSA during 2009. A descriptive study was carried out among attendants at hospitals and primary health care centers in Makkah during 2009, irrespective of age and sex. The data were collected by interviewing suspected persons using a pre-designed questionnaire, clinical examination, and specific laboratory investigation. A total of 1138 subjects were included in the study. Among the study population, 25% of the cases between 15 and 24 years old were found positive for influenza A(H1N1) by PCR technique. Although a significant population was affected by influenza A(H1N1) during 2009 in Makkah, the efforts and steps taken by health authorities at all levels―especially those in directorate of health affairs of Makkah—helped to avert the mortality associated with the H1N1 influenza among the residents and those coming for Umrah and Hajj to Makkah by providing and timely diagnosis.
