Occurrence of organochlorine pollutants in the eggs and dropping-amended soil of Antarctic large animals and its ecological significance

Persistent organochlorine pollutants (POPs) are analyzed for the dropping-amended soils from the habitats of Antarctic seabirds and seals in Fildes Peninsula and Ardley Island. the concentration ranges are 0.21 to 3.85 ng/g for polychlorinated biphenyls (ΣPCBs),0.09 to 2.01 ng/g for organochlorine pesticides (ΣDDt),and 0.06 to 0.76 ng/g for hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs). Among these,hepata-chlorobiphenyls,hexachlorobiphenyls,p,p′-DDE and α-HCH compounds are dominant. the concentra-tion ranges of ΣPCB,DDt and HCH in the eggs of skuas were 91.9―515.5 ng/g,56.6―304.4 ng/g and 0.5―2.0 ng/g respectively; those in the eggs of penguins were 0.4―0.9 ng/g,2.4―10.3 ng/g and 0.1― 0.4 ng/g; and those in the eggs of giant petrel were 38.1―81.7 ng/g,12.7―53.7 ng/g and 0.5―1.5 ng/g respectively. the dominant POP compounds in the eggs are PCB180,PCB153,p,p′-DDE and hexa-chlorobenzene (HCB). the present study shows that the concentration of POPs in the sea-bird-inhabited-dropping-amended soil varies with the extent of predation and nest occupancy of dif-ferent seabird populations. Statistical analysis on the POP concentrations from the different seabird eggs implies that the difference in the bio-concentration levels of the birds depends on the bio-habits of the species,such as the range of activity,distance of immigration,feeding pattern,and nest occupation. Among these,the most important factor is the location of the seabirds in the food chain and their feeding pattern. this shows that POPs accumulated in the seabirds resulted from the bio-concentration through the food chain. In addtion,210Pb dating for the dropping-amended soils (AD1-a and AD2) was performed,which provided the POP accumulation rate and the historic record for the soil profile. It indicates that POP will continuously affect the Antarctic ecosystem for a long time.

the relaxin peptide family–potential future hope for neuroprotective therapy? A short review

Since its discovery in the 1920’s the relaxin peptide hormone family has not only grown in number to now seven members （relaxin-1, relaxin-2, relaxin-3, insulin-like peptide （INSL） 3, INSL4, INSL5 and INSL6）, but ever more effects, suchs as vasodilatory, angiogenic, anti-apoptopic, anti-fibriotic and anti-inflammatory, have been linked to them. While relaxin-2 has mainly been investigated in the context of cardiac protection, most comprehensively in the RELAX-AHF and RELAX AHF2 studies, a small number of studies have furthermore assessed the potential neuroprotective effects of especially relaxin-2 and other members of the relaxin family. In this short review we summarise and discuss recent efforts to utilize relaxin hormones for neuroprotection and point out potential future fields of research and translational applications. While many questions still need to be answered, the promising results of the available studies definitely warrant future well-designed studies on neuroprotection by relaxin peptides.

We study the interpolation of Morrey-Campanato spaces and some smoothness spaces based on Morrey spaces, e. g., Besov-type and triebel-Lizorkin-type spaces. Various interpolation methods, including the complex method, the ±-method and the Peetre-Gagliardo method, are studied in such a framework. Special emphasis is given to the quasi-Banach case and to the interpolation property.

Aging is a complex process that can be characterized by functional and cognitive decline in an individual. Aging can be assessed based on the functional capacity of vital organs and their intricate interactions with one another. thus, the nature of aging can be described by focusing on a specific organ and an individual itself. However, to fully understand the complexity of aging,one must investigate not only a single tissue or biological process but also its complex interplay and interdependencies with other biological processes. Here, using RNA-seq, we monitored changes in the transcriptome during aging in four tissues(including brain, blood, skin and liver) in mice at9 months, 15 months, and 24 months, with a final evaluation at the very old age of 30 *** identified several genes and processes that were differentially regulated during aging in both tissue-dependent and tissue-independent manners. Most importantly, we found that the electron transport chain(EtC) of mitochondria was similarly affected at the transcriptome level in the four tissues during the aging process. We also identified the liver as the tissue showing the largest variety of differentially expressed genes(DEGs) over time. Lcn2(Lipocalin-2) was found to be similarly regulated among all tissues, and its effect on longevity and survival was validated using its orthologue in Caenorhabditis elegans. Our study demonstrated that the molecular processes of aging are relatively subtle in their progress, and the aging process of every tissue depends on the tissue’s specialized function and environment. Hence, individual gene or process alone cannot be described as the key of aging in the whole organism.

Nonlinear waves of the Hirota and the Maxwell Bloch equations in nonlinear optics

In this paper, considering the Hirota and the Maxwell–Bloch （H-MB） equations which are governed by femtosecond pulse propagation through a two-level doped fiber system, we construct the Darboux transformation of this system through a linear eigenvalue problem. Using this Daurboux transformation, we generate multi-soliton, positon, and breather solutions （both bright and dark breathers） of the H-MB equations. Finally, we also construct the rogue wave solutions of the above system.

Magnetic resonance imaging in children and adolescents with chronic inflammatory bowel disease

Inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD) represent challenges, both from a diagnostic, and therapeutic point of view. Deep-seated anatomic structures are difficult to assess by ultrasound technique alone. As radiation-free alternative cross-sectional imaging method, magnetic resonance imaging of the intestinal structures is costly and time-consuming. Examination of pediatric patients imply additional considerations: reduction of body motions in younger children and consideration of the most appropriate preparation, and examination technique. the demanding Sellink technique is the only means for appropriately distending the lesser intestine in order to detect small bowel strictures. Oral intake of contrast medium(CM) alone shows its limitations regarding distensibility. the need for intravenous contrast media application needs to be considered, too. Active inflammation of both intestinal wall, and mesentery can be demonstrated accurately. Nevertheless, viable alternatives to CM application is desirable, considering non-negligible adverse reactions. Recent data suggest diffusion weighted imaging might fill this diagnostic gap. Irrespective of sequence technique chosen, bowel movement remains a major obstacle. Antispasmolytics in their function as smooth muscle relaxants help in improving image quality, however, their use in children might be off-label. Optimal preparation for the examination and appropriate imaging technique allow for diagnosing typical patterns of changes in IBD, such as bowel wall thickening, ulcers, mural stratification, strictures, creeping fat, and comb sign, and lymphadenopathy. the article gives a detailed overview of current significance of magnetic resonance imaging pediatric patients suffering from IBD, considering indications, limitations, and safety aspects.

In research and policies,the identifcation of trends as well as emerging topics and topics in decline is an important source of information for both academic and innovation *** at present policy analysis mostly employs qualitative research methods,the following article presents and assesses diferent approaches–trend analysis based on questionnaires,quantitative bibliometric surveys,the use of computer-linguistic approaches and machine learning and qualitative *** this backdrop,this article examines digital applications in cultural heritage and,in particular,built heritage via various investigative frameworks to identify topics of relevance and trendlines,mainly for European Union(EU)-based research and ***,this article exemplifes and assesses the specifc opportunities and limitations of the diferent methodical approaches against the backdrop of data-driven ***-guided analytical *** its major fndings,our study shows that both research and policies related to digital applications for cultural heritage are mainly driven by the availability of new *** policies focus on meta-topics such as digitisation,openness or automation,the research descriptors are more *** general,data-driven approaches are promising for identifying topics and trendlines and even predicting the development of near future ***,qualitative approaches are able to answer“why”questions with regard to whether topics are emerging due to disruptive innovations or due to new terminologies or whether topics are becoming obsolete because they are common knowledge,as is the case for the term“internet”.
