In a fragmented landscape,transitional zones between neighboring habitats are common,and our understanding of community organizational forces across such habitats is *** studies are numerous,but the majority of them utilize information on species richness and *** and taxonomic diversity,however,provide little information on the functioning and phylogeny of the co-existing *** the evaluation of their functional and phylogenetic relationships,we aimed to assess whether ground beetle assemblages are deterministically or stochastically structured along grassland-forest *** results showed different community assembly rules on opposite sides of the forest *** the grassland,co-occurring species were functionally and phylogenetically not different from the random null model,indicating a random assembly *** to this,at the forest edge and the interior,co-occurring species showed functional and phylogenetic clustering,thus environmental filtering was the likely process structuring carabid *** assembly in the grassland was considerably affected by asymmetrical species flows (spillover)across the forest edge:more forest species penetrated into the grassland than open-habitat and generalist species entered into the *** asymmetrical species flow underlines the importance of the filter function of forest *** unfavorable,human-induced changes to the structure,composition and characteristics of forest edges may alter their filter function,edges have to be specifically considered during conservation management.

We study the dynamic behavior of marginal metallic glass-forming liquids Al-Ni-M （M=La, Pr, Nd） in terms of liquid fragility in high and low temperature regions. The liquids are extremely fragile above the liquidus temperature T liq, but become rather strong near the glass transition temperature Tg. The strength of the transition is inversely correlated with the fragility index at Tg. This relation is discussed in terms of potential energy landscape.

Savannas cover a wide climatic gradient across large portions of the Earth’s land surface and are an important component of the terrestrial *** have been undergoing changes that alter the composition and structure of their vegetation such as the encroachment of woody vegetation and increasing land-use *** the spatial and temporal dynamics of savanna ecosystem structure(e.g.,partitioning woody and herbaceous vegetation)and function(e.g.,aboveground biomass)is of high *** challenges include misclassification of savannas as forests at the mesic end of their range,disentangling the contribution of woody and herbaceous vegetation to aboveground biomass,and quantifying and mapping fuel ***,we review current(2010–present)research in the application of satellite remote sensing in savannas at regional and global *** identify emerging opportunities in satellite remote sensing that can help overcome existing *** provide recommendations on how these opportunities can be leveraged,specifically(1)the development of a conceptual framework that leads to a consistent definition of savannas in remote sensing;(2)improving mapping of savannas to include ecologically relevant information such as soil properties and fire activity;(3)exploiting high-resolution imagery provided by nanosatellites to better understand the role of landscape structure in ecosystem functioning;and(4)using novel approaches from artificial intelligence and machine learning in combination with multisource satellite observations,e.g.,multi-/hyperspectral,synthetic aperture radar(SAR),and light detection and ranging(lidar),and data on plant traits to infer potentially new relationships between biotic and abiotic components of savannas that can be either proven or disproven with targeted field experiments.

Changes in technology have dramatically changed the tax administration landscape and challenged the way the revenue agencies go about their work by gathering and analyzing information,supporting taxpayers and encouraging their *** agencies need to keep pace with rapid changes in technology and the industries,and lay a strong foundation for future *** article focuses on seven key strategies that help bring a new mindset to tax administration,workforce management and the customer experience,namely:(i)get digital to the core,(ii)unlock the power of data,(iii)reimagine the workforce,(iv)improve the tax experience,(v)tax new stuff fast,(vi)embrace the end-to-end tax community,and(vii)balance competing *** seven keys to transformation include three internal shifts,three external shifts,and one strategic mindset ***,agencies will need to transform by rethinking digital workflows,data management and the ***,agencies will need to become nimbler in order to enhance the taxpayer experience,develop processes to keep pace with economic reality,and deepen relationships with stakeholders in the taxation ***,agencies will have to address head-on the paradoxical demands of the digital ecosystem they occupy.

Urbanization has caused significant landscape changes in rural areas,leading to the emergence of urbanized landscapes(ULs),which have been generally criticized by authorities and ***,perceptions of ULs among local residents have rarely been *** this study,we chose five typical categories of ULs from rapidly transforming villages in Fujian Province,China–hardened water bank(HWB),big pavilion(BPA),big memorial arch(BMA),big ornamental lawn(BOL),and big square(BSQ)to do the *** identified how these ULs were rated and ranked by on-site surveys,as well as how related aesthetic and multifunctional landscape characters(LCs)played a *** results(N=550)showed that 1)residents supported the construction of ULs,and the most preferred category was that with the most natural elements(BOL)that was simultaneously well maintained.2)For the residents,the longer they had resided in the village and the fewer connections they had with the city,the more in favor they were of the ULs,and the more eager they were for landscape *** addition,residents with higher education and Communist Party of China membership valued the naturalness related LCs more highly.3)Two contradictory preference features,naturalness and livability,should be well coordinated and balanced to construct an improved favorable village for the residents,to realize a balanced and sustainable development *** study makes great theoretical contributions to landscape research and provides new insights into rural planning and construction.

Science and innovation diplomacy is at a crossroad-facing the need for enhanced cooperation to tackle global challenges and in a more complex geopolitical *** on“learning-by-doing”and“learningby-experimenting”as well as focusing on future development needs and opportunities,the science and innovation diplomacy practices of“Nordic+”countries,i.e.,denmark,Finland,Sweden and the Netherlands,in China are presented in the *** common strategic insights can be summarized as:1)a new policy narrative on“co-opetition”,2)a balanced approach and a long-term and future-oriented perspective on“coopetition”and 3)more agile,targeted and impact-oriented instruments and partnerships for“co-opetition”.Concrete suggestions for the future development include:1)a deepened understanding of how science and innovation are inter-connected with strategic and economic interests of countries and continents,2)publicly funded schemes and instruments for engaging Nordic multinationals and deepening science-industry-policy collaborative efforts,3)systematic methods through combining evidence-based and future-oriented analyses and 4)skill-and capacity development for identifying,preventing and mitigating multifaceted risks in *** such contexts,the implementation of EU’s mission-driven innovation and the twin-transition,*** sustainability transition and digital transition,can open up new opportunities for the future cooperation.

The COST Action FP0903 “Climate Change and forest Mitigation and Adaptation in a Polluted Environment (MAFor)” involved 29 countries and created a platform for information exchange with experts from different fields, with the following main objectives: 1) to increase understanding of the state and potential of forest mitigation and adaptation to climate change in a polluted environment and 2) to reconcile process-oriented research, long-term monitoring and applied modelling at comprehensive forest research sites. In particular, MAFor translated the existing European knowledge on climate and air pollution dynamics into prospects for forest research and monitoring, with focus on the carbon, ozone, nitrogen and water budgets. The aim of this paper is to summarize scientific activities and achievements of MAFor: the creation of a meta-database for highlighting the available data and integrating the information from European forest research/monitoring networks;the development of a new concept of forest sites for research and monitoring (Supersites);the identification of the main knowledge gaps;and the definition of priorities for forest adaptation to climate change in a polluted environment. The action also increased European capacity building in this sector by organizing five conferences, granting 64 short-term scientific missions, organizing four training schools and publishing more than 100 papers.
