The main purpose of this study is to understand the stabilizing effect of ground-sills on the riverbed through a series of flume model experiments. From results, although check dams have the ability to control upstream sediment transport, the mass energy produced by the free fall of the overtopping discharge still causes strong local scour downstream of the structure, and this scour leads to the instability of the check dam. Therefore, this study conducted model experiments on various types of serial ground-sills to determine the appropriate spacing to best protect the downstream bed. Based on the observations and analysis of channel geomorphology and sedimentation, this study concluded the following results: 1) Serial ground-sills reduces the sediment transport ability perfectly, especially under a mild channel gradient equipped with 2-4 times the average channel width interval. But for steep slopes, it is suggested that the proper spacing should be shortened to 1-2 times the average channel width. 2) Ground-sills can effectively protect the streambed from scouring under a suitable equipped condition and the concepts of guiding scour and riverbed inertia were used in the analysis of optimal ground-sill spacing.

The extra sediment load induced by typhoons and rainstorms in the Heshe River, Taiwan, are the principal reason for severe sediment-related disasters. The total sediment load during Typhoon Morakot in 9009 was 31 x lo6 m3, accounting for 95% of the annual sediment discharge. Large amounts of sediment load entered the Hoshe River, causing the braiding index （BI） to increase. Subsequently, the BI became positively correlated with the channel width in the Hoshe River. The specific typhoon and rainstorm events decreased after Typhoon Morakot, the sediment input decreased, inducing the fluvial morphology of the braided river to develop into a meandering river. The extra sediment load induced the deposition depth to increase and produce a headward deposition in the main channel and its tributaries. In addition, the river bend and the topographical notch restrained the sediment from moving downstream and being stored locally, indirectly increasing the erosion density of the river banks from 2.5 to lo.5 times.

Background Primary percutaneous coronary intervention （PCI） is the best treatment of choice for acute ST segment elevation myocardial infarction （STEMI）. This study aimed to determine the clinical outcomes of tirofiban combined with the low molecular weight heparin （LMWH）, dalteparin, in primary PCI patients with acute STEMI. Methods From February 2006 to July 2006, a total of 120 patients with STEMI treated with primary PCI were randomised to 2 groups： unfractionated heparin （UFH） with tirofiban （group I： 60 patients, （61.2±9.5） years）, and dalteparin with tirofiban （group il： 60 patients, （60.5±10.1） years）. Major adverse cardiac events （MACE） during hospitalization and at 4 years after PCI were examined. Bleeding complications during hospitalization were also examined. Results There were no significant differences in sex, mean age, risk factors, past history, inflammatory marker, or echocardiography between the 2 groups. In terms of the target vessel and vascular complexity, there were no significant differences between the 2 groups. During the first 7 days, emergent revascularization occurred only in 1 patient （1.7%） in group I. Acute myocardial infarction （AMI） occurred in 1 （1.7%） patient in group I and in 1 （1.7%） in group II. Three （5.0%） patients in group I and 1 （1.7%） in group II died. Total in-hospital MACE during the first 7 days was 4 （6.7%） in group I and 2 （3.3%） in group Ⅱ. Bleeding complications were observed in 10 patients （16.7%） in group I and in 4 patients （6.7%） in group II, however, the difference was not statistically significant. No significant intracranial bleeding was observed in either group. Four years after PCI, death occurred in 5 （8.3%） patients in group I and in 4 （6.7%） in group Ⅱ. MACE occurred in 12 （20.0%） patients in group I and in 10 （16,7%） patients in group Ⅱ. Background： Hydrogen sulfide （H,S） plays a protective role in chronic hemodialysis （CHD） patients. In this study, we further investigate the relationship between H,S and conventional protein kinase CβII （cPKCβII） in CHD patients with uremic accelerated atherosclerosis （UAAS）. Methods： A total of 30 healthy people, 30 CHD patients without AS and 30 CHD patients with AS （CHD ＋ AS） were studied. Plasma H,S was measured with a sulfide sensitive electrode, and cPKCβ11 membrane translocation was detected by Western blotting. Results： Plasma H2S in CHD ＋ AS group was significantly lower than that in CHD patients, cPKCβII membrane translocation in CHD ＋AS group increased significantly compared with CHD group. Plasma H,S concentration was negatively correlated with cPKCβ11 membrane translocation in CHD ＋ AS patients. Conclusions： These findings suggest a possible linkage between H,S metabolism and cPKCβ11 activation, which may contribute to the development of UAAS in CHD patients.

Effects of competitive and noncompetitive 5α-reductase inhibitors on serum and intra-prostatic androgens in beagle dogs

Background 5a-Reductase inhibitors （5a-RI） act by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone （DHT）, thereby preventing DHT induced benign prostatic hyperplasia. The existing 5a-RIs can be classified into two types： competitive and noncompetitive. Currently, limited evidence is available concerning the effect differences between the two types of 5a-RI on androgens. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of competitive and noncompetitive 5a-RIs on serum and intra-prostatic androgens in beagle dogs. Methods Twenty beagles with spontaneous benign prostatic hyperplasia were randomly allocated into two groups： epristeride group （n=10） in which beagles were treated with epristeride at 1 mg/kg once a day for 3 months, and finasteride group （n=10） in which beagles were treated with finasteride at 1 mg/kg once a day for 3 months. The levels of intra-prostatic testosterone and DHT were measured before treatment and on day one after three months medication. Serum levels of testosterone and DHT were measured at the same time points. Changes in androgen levels before and after treatment were analyzed, and comparisons were made within each treatment group and between treatment groups. Results After 3-month treatment, serum and intra-prostatic DHT levels all decreased significantly in both the epristeride and finasteride groups. The change of DHT in serum was significantly higher in the finasteride group （-14% and -43% in epdsteride and finasteride groups respectively, with P〈0.001）; however there was no significant difference in the changes of intra-prostatic DHT between the two groups （-47% and -51% in epristeride and finasteride groups, respectively, P=0.304）. The decreases in DHT levels were accompanied by reciprocal increases in serum and intra-prostatic testosterone levels.
