Objective: To investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility of 97 clinical Staphylococcus aureus(S. aureus) strains against 14 antimicrobials and corresponding resistance ***: The antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates was determined using a disk diffusion method and antimicrobial resistance genes were screened by polymerase chain reaction. Mutations responsible for ciprofloxacin and rifampicin resistance were investigated by polymerase chain reaction and DNA ***: All isolates were found to be susceptible to vancomycin. Various rates of resistance to penicillin(83.5%), ampicillin(77.3%), erythromycin(63.9%), tetracycline(16.5%), amoxicillin/clavulanic acid(16.5%), ciprofloxacin(15.5%), trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole(15.5%), oxacillin(13.4%), fusidic acid(12.4%), rifampin(6.2%), clindamycin(6.2%), gentamicin(6.2%) and mupirocin(5.2%) were determined. In addition,different combinations of resistance genes were identified among resistant *** resistant isolates had mutations in codon 84(Ser84 Leu) and 106(Gly106 Asp) in the gyr A gene. Mutations in grl A were mostly related to Ser80 Phe substitution. Leu466 Ser mutation in the rpo B gene was detected in all rifampin resistant isolates. All methicillin resistant S. aureus isolates were SCCmec type ***: In conclusion, it was determined that the isolates were resistant to different classes of antimicrobials at varying rates and resistance was mediated by different genetic mechanisms. Therefore, continuous monitoring of resistance in S. aureus strains is necessary to control their resistance for clinically important antimicrobials.

Background: Pregnancy and early life are critical periods of plasticity during which the fetus and neonate may be influenced by environmental factors such as *** methionine(Met) supply in non-ruminants during pregnancy can affect offspring development and ***,the objective of this study was to investigate if increasing Met supply during late-pregnancy affects developmental parameters of the calf at birth and if either maternal Met or colostrum from Met-fed cows alters calf *** born to Holstein cows individually-fed a basal control [CON; 1.47 Mcal/kg dry matter(DM) and 15.3% crude protein] diet with no added Met or CON plus ethylcellulose rumen-protected Met(MET; Mepron? at 0.09% of diet DM; Evonik Nutrition & Care GmbH,Germany)during the last 28 ± 2 d of pregnancy were used.A total of 39 calves were in CON(n = 22 bulls,17 heifers) and 42 in MET(n = 20 bulls,22 heifers).At birth,calves were randomly allocated considering dam treatment and colostrum as fol ows: 1) calves from CON cows and colostrum from CON cows(n = 21); 2) calves from CON cows and colostrum from MET cows(n = 18); 3) calves from MET cows and colostrum from MET cows(n = 22); and 4) calves from MET cows and colostrum from CON cows(n = 20).Al calves were housed,managed,and fed individual y during the first 9 wk of ***: Despite greater daily DM intake pre-partum in cows fed MET(15.7 vs.14.4 ± 0.12 kg/d,P < 0.05),colostrum quality and quantity were not affected by maternal *** birth,MET calves had greater(P ≤ 0.05) body weight(BW,44.1 vs.42.1 ± 0.70 kg),hip height(HH,81.3 vs.79.6 ± 0.53 cm) and wither height(WH,77.8 vs.75.9 ± 0.47 cm).In contrast,concentrations of His,Lys,and Asn in plasma were lower(P ≤ 0.05) in MET *** of colostrum source,the greater BW,HH,and WH in MET calves at birth persisted through 9 wk of age resulting in average responses of + 3.1 kg BW,+ 1.9 cm HH,and + 1.8 cm WH compared with *** daily gain during the 9 wk was(P

Objective:To reveal the effects of 9-cis retinoic acid (RA) on cortical granules (CGs) migration andin vitro embryo production (IVP) rate in meiosisⅡvitrified bovine oocyte. Methods:Followingin vitro maturation (IVM) in a medium containing 5 nM of 9-cis-RA, 60 oocytes were vitrified and then thawed. Then, half of them were evaluated for CGs migration and the other half were used for in vitro fertilization and IVP (on day 3). In addition, the other 60 oocytes were considered as the control group, which did not receive RA in IVM medium. The data were presented to one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's ***:Results showed that IVP rate (4-8 cells embryos) was significantly (P<0.05) higher than the control group when RA had been added to IVM medium. Furthermore, the presence of RA in IVM medium improved the rate and mode of CGs migration so that the rate of oocytes that had completed CGs migration in the group, which had received RA, was significantly higher than the control ***:This study shows that presence of RA in IVM medium enhances the developmental competence and CGs distribution of meiosisⅡvitrified bovine oocyte. Therefore, adding RA in IVM medium can decrease the ultrastructural changes during vitrification and can improve the efficiency of bovine oocyte vitrification.

Quenching effect of deferoxamine on free radical-mediated photon production in luminol and ortho-phenanthroline-dependent chemiluminescence

Removing excessive free radicals （FRs） by a synthetic chemical might give a clue for treatment of many iron-mediated diseases. Deferoxamine （DFO） can be one of the chemicals of choice for the clue. To investigate photoredox properties of DFO, its quenching effect on superoxide radical （O2°）, hydrogen peroxide （H202） and hydroxyl radical （OH~） was examined using luminol and ortho-phenanthroline （o- phen） chemiluminescence （CL） systems and UV-vis spectrophotometry. Stern-Volmer equation was also used for the CL kinetics. The observed quenching effect of DFO on CL]photon production in luminol and o-phen CL systems strongly confirmed the static arm of quenching properties of DFO on OH° and H2O2, but much less pronounced on O2^-°; the quenching property was maximal when iron was involved in the reaction systems. The Stern-Volmer plots in the designed photochemical reaction systems also confirmed a potent quenching effect of DFO on FR-mediated CL. Our study highlights strong photoreducing and antioxidant properties of DFO with huge quenching capacity on excessive FRs, and thus implies its promising prospects for therapeutic applications.

Background : This study examined the ameliorative effect of D-3-O-methylchiroinositol, isolated from the stem bark of Piliostigma thonningii, on cadmium chloride-induced osteoporosis in male Wistar rats. Methods : Thirty-six rats were assigned to three treatment groups(n = 12). Group A(2 mL distilled water), group B:(2.5 mg/kg b.w. CdCl_2) and group C:(2.5 mg/kg b.w. CdCl_2 and D-3-O-methyl-chiroinositol 2 mg/kg b.w.). Bone ash, calcium, phosphate, magnesium, and zinc content, as well as bone histological changes were determined at the end of months 1, 2, and 3. Results : There were significant differences( P ≤ 0.05) in the weight of the cervical, tibia, and femoral bones in all groups. The serum concentration of CdCl_2 was significantly different across the three groups with time. There was significant variation( P < 0.005) in the mean bone ash across groups. The concentration of OH-proline was significantly different( P < 0.0001) across groups. There were significant differences( P < 0.0001) in bone calcium, magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus concentrations. Histology revealed high levels of bone mineralisation in the CdCl_2-treated group, indicative of osteoporosis with hypertrophied osteocytes, while the femur of Wistar rats treated with D-3-O-methyl-chiroinositol showed bone trabeculae and viable osteocytes. Conclusion : The study concluded that D-3-O-methyl-chiroinositol extract from Piliostigma thionningii stem bark ameliorated cadmium chloride-induced osteoporosis in male Wistar rats.

Background: Weaning is known to result in barrier dysfunction and villus atrophy in the immediate post-weaning phase, and the magnitude of these responses is hypothesized to correlate with changes in the glutathione(GSH)redox system. Therefore, these parameters were simultaneously measured throughout the weaning phase, in piglets differing in birth weight category and weaning age, as these pre-weaning factors are important determinants for the weaning transition. Low birth weight(LBW) and normal birth weight(NBW) littermates were assigned to one of three weaning treatments;i.e. weaning at 3 weeks of age(3 w), weaning at 4 weeks of age(4 w) and removal from the sow at 3 d of age and fed a milk replacer until weaning at 3 weeks of age(3 d3 w). For each of these treatments, six LBW and six NBW piglets were euthanized at 0, 2, 5, 12 or 28 d post-weaning piglets, adding up 180 ***: Weaning increased the glutathione peroxidase activity on d 5 post-weaning in plasma, and duodenal and jejunal mucosa. Small intestinal glutathione-S-transferase activity gradually increased until d 12 post-weaning, and this was combined with a progressive rise of mucosal GSH up till d 12 post-weaning. Oxidation of the GSH redox status(GSH/GSSG Eh) was only observed in the small intestinal mucosa of 3 d3 w weaned piglets at d 5 postweaning. These piglets also demonstrated increased fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran(FD4) and horseradish peroxidase fluxes in the duodenum and distal jejunum during the experiment, and specifically demonstrated increased FD4 fluxes at d 2 to d 5 post-weaning. On the other hand, profound villus atrophy was observed during the weaning transition for all weaning treatments. Vitamin E is known as important antioxidant to protect the reproductive system. The free radicals are continuously produced in last few years due to metabolic and nutritional deficiencies. These free radicals are responsible for the production of oxidative stress in animal bodies. This production of extensive amount of oxidative stress caused the detrimental effects on the sperm and various other male parameters. This imbalance between the antioxidants and oxidative stress, leads to the condition of infertility in male. Antioxidants play an important role for eliminating of these free radicals. Vitamin E is one of the best antioxidants for the removal of oxidative stress in male reproductive system. Its use increases the reproductive functions and efficiency of male reproductive system. The deficiency of this vitamin leads to degeneration of germinal epithelium and Leydig cells in seminiferous tubules. The use of selenium and vitamin E has the synergistic effects on the male reproductive system. The objective of this review was to collect the beneficial roles of this vitamin along selenium on reproductive system of birds and different animals. This review will also collect the different doses along the beneficial roles on different parameters of male reproductive system.

A review of the systemic acute phase reaction with major cytokines involved, and the hepatic metabolic changes, negative and positive acute phase proteins (APPs) with function and associated pathology is given. It appears that APPs represent appropriate analytes for assessment of animal health. Whereas they represent non-specific markers as biological effect reactants, they can be used for assessing nutritional deficits and reactive processes, especially when positive and negative acute phase variables are combined in an index. When such acute phase index is applied to separate healthy animals from animals with some disease, much better results are obtained than with single analytes and statistically acceptable results for culling individual animals may be reached. Unfortunately at present no cheap, comprehensive and easy to use system is available for assessing various acute phase proteins in serum or blood samples at the same time. Protein microarray or fluid phase microchip technology may satisfy this need; and permit simultaneous analysis of numerous analytes in the same small volume sample and enable integration of information derived from systemic reactivity and nutrition with disease specific variables. Applying such technology may help to solve health problems in various countries not only in animal husbandry but also in human populations.
