The interaction of xylanase, protease and superdosing(1,500 FTU/kg) phytase in a 2×2×2 factorial arrangement was studied in broilers fed sorghum-based diets. A total of 2,800 one-day-old unsexed Ross308 chicks were housed in 56 pens with 50 birds per pen, with or without inclusion of xylanase, protease and phytase, totaling 8 treatments and 7 replicates per treatment. Body weight(BW) and feed intake(FI)were measured at 21 and 42 days of age, and mortality corrected feed conversion ratio(FCR) was calculated for each period and cumulatively. Tibia ash and carcass yield were determined in 2 birds per replicate at 21 and 42 days of age, respectively. Digesta transit time was determined at 21, 28, 35 and 42 days of age using 5 birds per replicate. Results showed that superdosing phytase increased BW and FI at42 days of age(P ylanase improved FCR(P ylanase and phytase also positively influenced carcass yield and breast weight, respectively. Overall, inclusion of superdosing phytase increased transit time when included in a diet containing xylanase, and no change with protease inclusion. In conclusion, the beneficial effects of xylanase, protease and superdosing phytase in broiler performance were not additive. This limitation is likely not related to the lack of efficacy of any one of the individual enzymes but to a limitation of the bird to respond additively to successive additions of enzymes.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the dietary inclusion of full-fat flaxseed of full-fat sunflower seeds on performance parameters,egg quality parameters and egg yolk fatty acid profile in laying hens.A total of 150 Babcock Brown hens at 27 weeks of age were distributed in 3 experimental treatments,as follows:T1,control;T2,diet containing 13.5% full-fat whole flaxseed seeds;and T3,diet containing 13.5% full-fat ground sunflower *** and water were provided ad libitum and the experiment lasted for 8 *** significant differences were found on egg quality parameters,but total egg production and rate of lay were significantly(P yolk saturated,monounsaturated,polyunsaturated,omega-6(n-6) and omega-3(n-3) fatty acids were observed,as well as in the n-6:n-3 *** results show that the dietary inclusion of 13.5% flaxseed full-fat seeds significantly increases the n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid(PUFA) content in the eggs and lowers the n-6:n-3 ratio without affecting performance *** of full-fat sunflower seeds increases the n-6 PUFA content but affects total egg production and rate of *** studies are needed to determine the level of inclusion of full-fat sunflower seeds that does not affect performance.

Objective: To identify the changes in the proteome of U937 cells infected with dengue virus(deNV).Methods: In this study, differentiated U937 cultures were infected with two deNV-2strains, one of which was associated with dengue(deNV-2/NG) and the other one with severe dengue(deNV-2/16681), with the aim of determining the cellular proteomic profiles under different infection conditions. Cellular proteins were extracted and separated by two-dimensional electrophoresis, and those proteins with differential expression profiles were identified by mass spectrometry. The obtained results were correlated with cellular viability, the number of infectious viral particles, and the viral DNA/protein ***: In comparison with non-infected cultures, in the cells infected with the deNV-2/NG strain, nine proteins were expressed differentially(five were upregulated and four were downregulated); in those cultures infected with the deNV-2/16681 strain, six proteins were differentially expressed(two were downregulated and four were upregulated). The downregulated proteins included fatty acid-binding protein, heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein 1, protein disulfide isomerase, enolase 1, heat shock 70 k Da protein 9, phosphotyrosyl phosphatase, and annexin IV. The upregulated proteins included heat shock 90 k Da protein AA1, tubulin beta, enolase 1, pyruvate kinase,transaldolase and phospholipase ***: Because the monocyte/macrophage lineage is critical for disease pathogenicity, additional studies on these proteins could provide a better understanding of the cellular response to deNV infection and could help identify new therapeutic targets against infection.

Coccidiosis is a gastrointestinal disease caused by parasites of the genus Eimeria. To produce the ecological niche model for the geographic distribution of Eimeria species, the maximum entropy algorithm (MaxEnt) was used and 19 bioclimatic variables with a spatial resolution of 30 arc-seconds (approximately 1 km2) were downloaded from the World Climate Database. These were reduced to BIO2, BIO3, BIO4, BIO7 and BIO15 for each species after examining cross-correlations among them to account multicollinearity. A jackknife analysis was included to assess the contribution of five bioclimatic variables and the fit of the model was evaluated with the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Under a current climate scenario, the jackknife evaluation of the MaxEnt model showed that BIO4 (temperature seasonality) made the greatest contribution to the distribution model for 22 Eimeria species;whereas BIO7 (temperature annual range) was the most important factor that contributes to the distribution model of 10 species. The habitat suitability model based on the maximum entropy theory was supported by AUC values higher than 0.9 and predicted that the suitable habitats for different species of Eimeria are present in southern, eastern and western areas of Mexico. Our study may support future studies exploring factors that constrain the distribution of Eimeria as well as strategies aimed at reducing the disease prevalence.

The exchange of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) within an incubator has a significant impact on embryonic development (ED) and hatching processes. This study examines the influence of non-ventilation (NV) conditions during the first ten days of incubation at high altitudes on Leghorn hens hatching eggs. Five hundred four hatching eggs were equally divided into three treatment groups and placed in twelve incubators (R = 4). The first group was subjected to standard ventilated conditions (V) during the setting phase. The ventilation inlet holes of the remaining incubators in the NV treatments were closed with either micropore (M) or polypropylene (P) tape, referred to as NVM and NVP groups, respectively. These two different airtight settings were intended to allow for a gradual rise in CO2 naturally generated by the embryos. Results indicate that carbon dioxide concentration gradually increased during the first half of incubation, reaching 1.42% in the NVM group and 1.20% in the NVP group, while the V condition group remained at 0.15%. From 10 days of incubation onwards, normal V conditions were restored in all incubators. The highest hatchability of fertile eggs (HFE) was shown by the NVP group (55.7%), followed by the V (52.6%) and NVM (38.6%) groups. The NVP group showed a greater yolk-free body mass (yFBM) from 10 days of incubation until the hatch basket transfer. NV conditions during the first 10 days of incubation at high altitude produced higher yFBM with gradually decreasing yolk sac mass. In comparison to the NVM and V conditions, the particular NVP condition showed a beneficial impact on the quality of hatched chicks. Sustaining NVP condition (1.2% of CO2) throughout the first half of incubation at high altitude generated the optimal environment in the incubator ensuring the best hatchability results. Background:Lyme disease is a relatively new and zoonotic canine pathology mostly unknown by people involved in the management and care of ***:to assess the knowledge about Lyme disease by veterinarians and veterinary students in Veracruz,***:three questionnaires were designed and applied to 290 individuals(40 small animal veterinarians,50 in other professional practice and 200 veterinary students).Results and discussion:in general,the three groups were unaware about the disease,although there is a high interest in learning about this *** from seven universities included in this study stated that Lyme disease was not part of the veterinary curriculum in their *** clinical cases suggestive of Lyme disease occurring in dogs in the area were detected at the time of this ***:although the presence of the agent causing Lyme disease has not been demonstrated in the studied area due to the lack of laboratory support and the apparent absence of the vector,it cannot be ruled out;furthermore,it is important that veterinary practitioners and student alike be aware of the potential presence of Lyme disease,paying particular attention to differential diagnosis when resembling clinical signs are observed.

Insects as alternative feed for ruminants:comparison of protein evaluation methods

Fleas that infest pets are considered important parasites of both animals and humans. These insects cause irritation and can also transmit zoonotic diseases. Research has led to a rapid expansion in the development of flea control products. In the face of a market that offers dozens of commercial ectoparasiticides for dogs and cats, pet owners and veterinarians must be provided with evidence to support their decision to select a product to control fleas. To compare the efficacy of three commercially available products against companion animal fleas, a trial was conducted on naturally-infested dogs in order to validate their pulicidal activity. Thirty-two flea-infested dogs with fleas were divided into 4 groups (n = 8) for each treatment. Group 1 received one pipette of permethrin as a spot-on dose of 650 mg/ml. The second group received 9.7% fipronil as a spot-on formulation. Group 3 was treated with a spot-on formulation of permethrin 7.40% plus piperonyl butoxide at 7.40%. Group 4 remained as the untreated control. Fleas of all experimental dogs were examined and counted on days 0, 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 to determine the percentage of flea reduction. Results showed a 100% efficacy for all tested products. Identified species were: Ctenocephalides felis (75.7%), Ctenocephalides canis (15.9%) and Pulex irritans (9.5%). Based on these results, it was concluded that the three anti-flea products evaluated under the conditions of this study, produced an excellent efficacy as from the third day after treatment.
