NIBAN1 overexpression has been reported in a widerange of thyroid carcinoma subtypes,and in other cancers,while it is not expressed in thyroid benign lesions and normal thy-roid.1-3 However,the mechanism associated with its expression and prognostic value remains *** this study,six independent cohorts were enrolled,in which NIBAN1 expression was evaluated.A total of 583patients with thyroid tumors,326 patients with skin cancers,293 patients with colorectal carcinoma,and 189 patients with lung carcinoma were analyzed.

Objective: To isolate Candida albicans(C. albicans) from the urine of hospitalized patients and assess the virulence factors and antifungal susceptibility profiles of the ***: Yeasts were identified using the chromogenic medium CHROMagar?, the VITEK~?2 system, hypertonic Sabouraud broth, tobacco agar, polymerase chain reaction,and DNA sequencing. The evaluated virulence factors were proteinase production,phospholipase production, and biofilm production on polystyrene. The broth microdilution technique was used to determine the minimum inhibitory ***: All yeasts isolated from urine were identified as C. albicans using both classical and molecular methods. Although 91.3% of the isolates showed no phospholipase activity, 56.5% showed strong proteinase activity and 91.7% produced biofilm. All microorganisms were sensitive to fluconazole, voriconazole and amphotericin B, but 56.5% of the yeasts showed resistance to ***: C. albicans isolates from urine have a high capacity for virulence and can be associated with infectious processes. Furthermore, the high percentage of isolates resistant to itraconazole is important because this antifungal agent is commonly used to treat fungal infections in the hospital environment.

The ATP-binding cassette transporters(abc transporters)have been intensely studied over the past 50 years for their involvement in the multidrug resistance(MDR)phenotype,especially in *** are frequently overexpressed in both naive and post-treatment tumors,and hinder effective chemotherapy by reducing drug accumulation in cancer *** the last decade however,several studies have established that abc transporters have additional,fundamental roles in tumor biology;there is strong evidence that these proteins are involved in transporting tumor-enhancing molecules and/or in protein-protein interactions that impact cancer aggressiveness,progression,and patient *** review highlights these studies in relation to some well-described cancer hallmarks,in an effort to re-emphasize the need for further investigation into the physiological functions of abc transporters that are critical for tum or *** these new roles offers an opportunity to define new strategies and targets for therapy,which would include endogenous substrates or signaling pathways that regulate these proteins.

AIM To evaluate the prognostic value of the phase angle(PA)obtained from bioelectrical impedance analysis(BIA) for mortality prediction in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS In total, 134 male cirrhotic patients prospectively completed clinical evaluations and nutritional assessment by BIA to obtain PAs during a 36-mo follow-up period. Mortality risk was analyzed by applying the PA cutoff point recently proposed as a malnutrition marker(PA ≤ 4.9°) in Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariate Cox regression models. RESULTS The patients were divided into two groups according to the PA cutoff value(PA > 4.9°, n = 73; PA ≤ 4.9°, n = 61). Weight, height, and body mass index were similar in both groups, but patients with PAs > 4.9° were younger and had higher mid-arm muscle circumference, albumin, and handgrip-strength values and lower severe ascites and encephalopathy incidences, interleukin(IL)-6/IL-10 ratios and C-reactive protein levels than did patients with PAs ≤ 4.9°(P ≤ 0.05). Forty-eight(35.80%) patients died due to cirrhosis, with a median of 18 mo(interquartile range, 3.3-25.6 mo) follow-up until death. Thirty-one(64.60%) of these patients were from the PA ≤ 4.9° group. PA ≤ 4.9° significantly and independently affected the mortality model adjusted for Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score and age(hazard ratio = 2.05, 95%CI: 1.11-3.77, P = 0.021). In addition, Kaplan-Meier curves showed that patients with PAs ≤ 4.9° were significantly more likely to die. CONCLUSION In male patients with cirrhosis, the PA ≤ 4.9° cutoff was associated independently with mortality and identified patients with worse metabolic, nutritional, and disease progression profiles. The PA may be a useful and reliable bedside tool to evaluate prognosis in cirrhosis.

A new method for quantification of total polyphenol content in medicinal plants based on the reduction of Fe(III)/1,10-phenanthroline complexes

This paper proposes an alternative analytical spectrophotometric method for the total polyphenol quantification in the aqueous extract of plants. When these extracts are added to solutions of Fe(III), in presence of 1,10-phenanthroline, the absorbance values at 551 nm (A511nm) due to the complexes formed are proportional to the total polyphenol concentration expressed as pyrogallic acid (PA). A typical calibration graph of A511nm values vs. PA is linear from 0.16 to 0.64 mg L-1 (r = 0.994, n = 6) with a limit of detection 0.041 mg L-1. The results of the polyphenol content of the aqueous extracts of twenty medicinal Brazilian plants obtained with the proposed method were compared with values using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. A paired t-test revealed no statistically significant difference for the species analyzed. The total antioxidant capacity of the same twenty extracts was determined based on the scavenging of stable radical DPPH.

Although the majority of breast cancers are sporadic, it is estimated that between 5% and 10% of cases are hereditary and mostly associated with BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 mutations. Women with BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 mutation present up to 95% increased risk of breast cancer and are advised to take preventive measures. Surveillance, chemoprevention and prophylactic surgery (mastectomy and oophorectomy) are risk-reducing strategies. This literature review aims to respond to two major questions: 1) to what extent is the decision-making for prophylactic mastectomy in women with the BRCA mutation a more relevant option than other strategies, and 2) what are the major factors influencing the decision for mastectomy? For this purpose, 27 published articles were reviewed. Results show: a) the decision for mastectomy is more frequent in women carrying BRCA 1/2 mutation than in non-carriers;mastectomy being less frequent than oophorectomy;b) the decision-making is significantly associated with BRCA mutation, parity, age and family history;c) reasons underlying women decision-making relate to anxiety toward the risk of cancer, concerns with surgery, body-image and sexuality. It is discussed that, due to the complexity of the decision-making process, these cases require a careful and meticulous approach regarding information provided, and in addressing concerns.
