We describe the development of quinolylnitrones(QNs)as multifunctional ligands inhibiting cholinesterases(ChEs:acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase—h BChE)and monoamine oxidases(hMAO-A/B)for the therapy of neurodegenerative diseases.We identified QN 19,a simple,low molecular weight nitrone,that is readily synthesized from commercially available 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-carbaldehyde.Quinolylnitrone 19 has no typical pharmacophoric element to suggest ChE or MAO inhibition,yet unexpectedly showed potent inhibition of h BChE(IC50=1.06±0.31 nmol/L)and h MAO-B(IC_(50)=4.46±0.18μmol/L).The crystal structures of 19 with hBChE and hMAO-B provided the structural basis for potent binding,which was further studied by enzyme kinetics.Compound 19 acted as a free radical scavenger and biometal chelator,crossed the blood—brain barrier,was not cytotoxic,and showed neuroprotective properties in a 6-hydroxydopamine cell model of Parkinson's disease.In addition,in vivo studies showed the anti-amnesic effect of 19 in the scopolamine-induced mouse model of AD without adverse effects on motoric function and coordination.Importantly,chronic treatment of double transgenic APPswe-PS1δE9 mice with 19 reduced amyloid plaque load in the hippocampus and cortex of female mice,underscoring the disease-modifying effect of QN 19.

As photovoltaic energy increasingly penetrates in power systems,transmission system operators have started to request its participation in providing ancillary services.One of the demanded services is the power ramp-rate control(PRRC),which attempts to limit the power ramps produced by intermittent irradiance conditions.In order to achieve the desired objective,solutions based on storage systems or modifying the maximum power point tracking(MPPT)in perturb and observe(P&O)algorithms are commonly adopted.The starting point in PRRC is the determination of the instantaneous power ramprate,and different methods have been proposed in the literature for its calculation.However,the accuracy and computational speed of existing procedures can be improved,which may be critical in situations with rapid irradiance fluctuations.In this paper,a decoupled photovoltaic power ramp-rate calculation method is presented,in which the effect of variable irradiance and the P&O algorithm are computed separately.The proposed method has been theoretically demonstrated and tested through simulation and experimental tests.Simulation results show that it can improve the previous methods in terms of accuracy and computation time.Experimental validation with hardware-inthe-loop demonstrates the suitability of the proposed method for real-time applications,even in presence of noisy measurements.

For a point charge between two grounded conductor planes forming a 60° angle, the potential and electric field generated by point charge for yukawa’s potential (e-μr/r) and Coulomb’s potential (1/r) are modeled and simulated. The expression for the potential that generalizes the cases discussed in López-Mariño, M. and Trujillo Caballero, J. (2017) Point Charges and Conducting Planes for yukawa’s Potential and Coulomb’s Potential. Journal of Electromagnetic Analysis and Applications, 9, 135-146. https://***/10.4236/jemaa.2017.910012 is presented. Graphs for the potential and electric field for both cases are showed using Maple, that of Coulomb and that of yukawa for different values of μ . The purpose of this work is to offer students a practical guide for problem analysis of electrostatics using Maple’s capabilities as a computational tool.

Cognitive function of older adults is influenced by several factors such as age,sex,education,and physical activity so that it can impact the decrease in progressive cognitive function.It is necessary to implement cognitive training in old people’s care to prevent or delay the onset of age-related cognitive decline.Brain gym is a series of simple motion exercises and is an alternative therapy that stimulates the brain.This study aims to evaluate the effect of brain gym as a cognitive training intervention on global cognitive functioning of institutionalized older population.The study is a non-randomized quasi-experimental one using pre-and post-test control group design.The participants of the study were 65 years old or older who had been part of gerontological centers from a local community.They were divided into two groups:control and intervention,each one with 15 people.Mini-Mental State Examination was applied to the sample before and after the cognitive training.The brain gym training consists of bi-weekly group meeting for 12 weeks,lasting 50 min each.The treated group had a significantly better global cognitive function.Recalling(memory),orientation and language skills were the domains with the most significant changes(pym improves global cognitive function of institutionalized older people lease type your abstract here.Abstract of a research paper is typically 200 to 400 words in length,and 150 to 300 words for a review paper.Abstract shall be running continuously(not structured)and shall not include reference citations.Abbreviations that appear only once in the abstract should be defined in full.If abbreviations appear more than once,the full definitions should be provided first before they can be used elsewhere.

Magnetic Susceptibility and Natural Gamma Radioactivity as Indirect Indicators of Impurities in Limestones of the Sabinas Basin: Possible Relationships with the Sedimentation Environment

This study presents an analysis of magnetic susceptibility and natural gamma radioactivity as indirect indicators of impurities in Cretaceous limestones of the Sabinas basin, as well as of the possible relation of these physical properties with the changes in the sedimentation environment. Both of these physical properties indicate changes in the degree of impurities and the mineralogical composition of this rock, principally in its organic matter and detritus content. Considering that the sedimentation environment determines the impurities in these rocks, possible environmental conditions at different levels of the Cretaceous were suggested using the magnetic susceptibility, total gamma radiation and potassium values, as well as the uranium and thorium concentration in the limestones. The analyses suggest variations in the depth of water table of the basin, which are mainly related to transgressions and marine regressions.

Modelling the impacts of cover crop management strategies on the water use,carbon exchange and yield of olive orchards

Cover crops have long been proposed as an alternative soil management for minimizing erosion rates in olive stands while providing additional ecosystem services.However,the trade-off between these benefits and the competition for water with the trees makes the definition of optimal management practices a challenging task in semiarid climates.This work presents an improved version of OliveCan,a process-based simulation model of olive orchards that now can simulate the main impacts of cover crops on the water and carbon balances of olive orchards.Albeit simple in its formulation,the new model components were developed to deal with different cover crop management strategies.Examples are presented for simulation runs of a traditional olive orchard in the conditions of southern Spain,evaluating the effects of different widths for the strip occupied by the cover crop(Fcc)and two contrasting mowing dates.Results revealed that high Fccresulted in lower olive yields,but only when mowing was applied at the end of spring.In this regard,late mowing and high Fccwas associated with lower soil water content from spring to summer,coinciding with olive flowering and the earlier stages of fruit growth.Fccwas also negatively correlated with surface runoff irrespective of the mowing date.On the other hand,net ecosystem productivity(NEP)was substantially affected by both Fccand mowing date.Further simulations under future climate scenarios comparing the same management alternatives are also presented,showing substantial yield reductions by the end of the century and minor or negligible changes in NEP and seasonal runoff.

Preparation of Rod-like Aluminum Doped Zinc Oxide Powders by Sol-gel Technique Using Metal Chlorides and Acetylacetone Precursors

Al-doped ZnO(AZO) powders were prepared by using metal chloride precursors and the sol-gel technique. IR peaks observed at 1590 cm-1 and 1620 cm-1indicated the formation of metal chelate as a consequence of the addition of acetylacetone to the metal chloride solution. TG-DSC analysis of the AZO gels confirmed the formation of metal chelate as evidenced by the development of several weight loss peaks accompanied by the introduction of new endothermic peaks. The resulting AZO gels were annealed at 500, 600, and 800 ℃ to study the effect of annealing temperature. XRD and SEM results showed that crystallization of AZO gels takes place around 600 ℃. Hexagonal wurtzite structure was identified as the main phase for all the samples. In addition, small shift of the XRD(002) peak coupled with XPS results from the AZO powders confirmed the successful doping of the ZnO powders. Micron sized rod-like AZO powders were uniform in dimension and morphology and remained stable even at 800 ℃.

More than boric acid:Increasing relevance of boron in medicine

Although boron has been a chemical element of interest since the ancient times,only a few boron-containing compounds(BCCs)had been used for medicinal purposes before the 21^(st) century.Among these,only boric acid has been explored in multiple therapeutic applications.Hence,it is common to extrapolate from boric acid to all BCCs,supposing a similar biological effect.However,boric acid is just one of dozens of BCCs in nature and thousands available from chemical synthesis.Nowadays,there is a boom in research on new BCCs as potential tools in the prevention,diagnosis and therapy of human disease.We herein discuss the new role of BCCs in drug development,with emphasis on the compounds for which a mechanism of action has been proposed or demonstrated.Because of data gathered in recent years,BCCs have expanded beyond the well-known fields of antimicrobial and antineoplastic agents,now being explored for their possible use as enzyme inhibitors,regulators of protein expression and modulators of the immune response,as well as in biomaterials.We suggest that translational medicine can accelerate the medicinal applications of BCCs,which is especially important for the human diseases that are generating a high global burden.

Fractal interpolation:a sequential approach

Fractal interpolation is a modern technique to fit and analyze scientific data.We develop a new class of fractal interpolation functions which converge to a data generating(original)function for any choice of the scaling factors.Consequently,our method offers an alternative to the existing fractal interpolation functions(FIFs).We construct a sequence of-FIFs using a suitable sequence of iterated function systems(IFSs).Without imposing any condition on the scaling vector,we establish constrained interpolation by using fractal functions.In particular,the constrained interpolation discussed herein includes a method to obtain fractal functions that preserve positivity inherent in the given data.The existence of Cr--FIFs is investigated.We identify suitable conditions on the associated scaling factors so that-FIFs preserve r-convexity in addition to the Cr-smoothness of original function.

Global warming is the phenomenon in which the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere produces the increase of the global average temperature. Carbon dioxide is one of the main responsible for the "extended" greenhouse effect. The release of this gas mostly obeys to anthropogenic activities effect. Plants contribute to store the atmospheric CO through the photosynthesis and biomass production. The forests capability to store carbon is well known around the world, however in Ecuador there is insufficient information about this topic. This paper presents the research conducted in order to quantify the carbon stored in two soil use systems. Pastures with and without shade were analyzed during the study. Both soil use systems are located in the Sumaco Biosphere Reserve. Temporary sample plots of 500m were installed in three towns of Napo Province. The sample plots were divided in several smaller plots and trial pits. All storage components of woody and herbaceous strata were analyzed. The obtained data were expressed in tons per hectare of estimated CO. The results of the study showed on one hand, that the main storage component in both soil use systems was the soil;whereas, forage production was higher in system without shade.
