Proliferation Inhibitory Activity of Quinones from Blaps rynchopetera Defense Secretion on Colorectal Tumor Cells

Objective: To explore the proliferation inhibitory effect of quinones from Blaps rynchopetera defense secretion on colorectal tumor cell lines. Methods: Human colorectal cancer cell HT-29, human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell Caco-2 and normal human colon epithelial cell CCD841 were chosen for the evaluation of inhibitory activity of the main quinones of B. rynchopetera defense secretion, including methyl p-benzoquinone(MBQ), ethyl p-benzoquinone(EBQ), and methyl hydroquinone(MHQ), through methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium assay. The tumor-related factors, cell cycles, related gene expressions and protein levels were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assy, flow cytometry, RT-polymerase chain reaction and Western blot, respectively. Results: MBQ, EBQ, and MHQ could significantly inhibit the proliferation of Caco-2, with half maximal inhibitory concentration(IC50) values of 7.04±0.88, 10.92±0.32, 9.35±0.83, HT-29, with IC50values of 14.90±2.71, 20.50±6.37, 13.90±1.30, and CCD841, with IC50values of 11.40±0.68, 7.02±0.44 and 7.83±0.05 μg/mL, respectively. Tested quinones can reduce the expression of tumor-related factors tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin(IL)-10, and IL-6 in HT-29 cells, selectively promote apoptosis, and regulate the cell cycle which can reduce the proportion of cells in the G1phase and increase the proportion of the S ***, tested quinones could up-regulate mRNA and protein expression of GSK-3β and APC, while down-regulate that of β-catenin, Frizzled1, c-Myc, and CyclinD1 in the Wnt/β-catenin pathway of HT-29 ***: Quinones from B. rynchopetera defense secretion could inhibit the proliferation of colorectal tumor cells and reduce the expression of related factors, which would be functioned by regulating cell cycle, selectively promoting apoptosis, and affecting Wnt/β-catenin pathway-related mRNA and protein expressions.

Population Genetic Analysis of the Rice Stem Borer, Chilo suppressalis, in the South China

Genetic variation and patterns of genetic differentiation of the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis （Lepidoptera： Pyralidae）, from the South China were analyzed using 6 microsatellite markers and two partial mtDNA （cox1 and cox2） regions. All of the 6 microsatellite loci were polymorphic in the studied seven populations. The allelic richness per population ranged between 5.67 and 14.00, and average H E and H O values were 0.6246-0.8329 and 0.2634-0.6061, respectively. As the mitochondrial genome is a single genetic locus, we only present results for the concatenated data set （cox1 plus cox2 gene sequences, 513 bp）. The concatenated data showed high level of genetic diversity and there are 23 variable polymorphic sites among the 513 sites in concatenated data. Nearly all of （20 of 21） pairwise F ST comparisons among populations showed genetic differentiation with moderate to high pairwise F ST values based on microsatellite markers. However, for the mtDNA data, most of the seven populations did not show significant differentiation with other populations. The differences of population differentiation obtained with the two different genetic markers could be mainly attributed to the different mutation rates of microsatellite and mtDNA. There was not genetic structure existed in these studied populations based on microsatellite loci and mtDNA data. The analysis based on network, mismatch distribution, Tajima＇s D and F S indicated that the studied populations were from the recent same ancestor or the same refuge and followed by a sudden demographic expansion condition.

History of study,updated checklist,distribution and key of scorpions (Arachnida:Scorpiones) from China

This review describes the history of taxonomic research on scorpions and provides an updated checklist and key of the scorpions currently known in China. This checklist is based on a thorough review of the extant literatures on scorpion species whose presence has been confirmed in China through field expeditions and examination of scorpion collections, excepting a few members that have no clear distribution or are currently in doubt. Totally, the scorpion fauna of China consists of 53 species and subspecies belonging to 12 genera crossing five families, with 33 species(62.3%) and one genus being recorded as endemic. Additionally, identification key and the distribution of scorpions from China are provided.

Fertility control of Rattus nitidus using quinestrol:effects on reproductive organs and social behavior

Fertility control has been identified by studies in the laboratory and the field as a more appropriate and long-term control strategy for rodent pests than lethal *** this study,we investigated the effects of quinestrol on mass of reproductive organs and on social behaviors in female and male Himalayan field rats(Rattus nitidus).A total of 16 adult females and 16 adult males were randomly assigned to 4 *** male and one female group were fed rice with 0.005%quinestrol by weight for 7 days,and another 2 groups were fed rice *** 7 days,rats were assigned to 10 min dyadic encounters between groups,and investigation,aggression,defense and attack latency were *** animals were killed on day 10,and reproductive organs were dissected and *** encounter data showed that there were obvious changes in social behaviors of quinestrol-treated *** significantly inhibited the investigative behavior of quinestrol-treated males toward control females in Rattus nitidus,but seldom affected investigation between control males and quinestrol-treated *** of control females toward quinestrol-treated males was higher than that of quinestrol-treated females,and defense of quinestrol-treated males toward control females was more remarkable than that of control *** remarkably decreased wet masses of epididymis and spermotophore in males and ovaries in females,but had no effect on wet masses of testes and uteri after quinestrol *** results indicate that the anti-fertility effects of quinestrol on *** are attributed to not only suppressing reproductive organs but also impacting social behaviors associated with territory defense and mate choice.

Centers of endemism and diversity patterns for typhlocybine leafhoppers （Hemiptera： Cicadellidae： Typhlocybinae） in China

This study identifies ＇centers of endemism＇ for typhlocybine leafhoppers in China, revealing diversity patterns and congruence of patterns between total species rich- ness and endemism. Distribution patterns of 774 Typhlocybinae （607 described and 167 undescribed species） were mapped on a 1.5° × 1.5° latitude/longitude grid. Total species richness, endemic species richness and weighted endemism richness were calculated for each grid cell. Grid cells within the top 5% highest values of weighted endemism richness were considered as ＇centers of endemism＇. Diversity patterns by latitude and altitude were obtained through calculating the gradient richness. A congruence of diversity patterns between total species richness and endemism was confirmed using correlation analysis. To investigate the bioclimatic factors （19 variables） contributing to the congruence be- tween total species richness and endemism, we compared the factor＇s difference between non-endemic and endemic species using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Eleven centers of en- demism, roughly delineated by mountain ranges, were identified in central and southern China, including the south Yunnan, Hengduan Mountains, Qinling Mountains, Hainan Is- land, Taiwan Island and six mountain areas located in western Sichuan, northwest Fujian, southeast Guizhou, southeast Hunan, central and western Guangdong, and north Zhejiang. Total species richness and endemic species richness decreased with increased latitude and had a consistent unimodal response to altitude. The proportions of endemism decreased with increased latitude and increased with rising altitude. Diversity patterns between total species richness and endemism were highly consistent, and ＇Precipitation of Coldest Pe- riod＇ and ＇Temperature of Coldest Period＇ may contribute to the congruence of pattern. Systematics and Species Validity of the Dabieshan Pit Viper Protobothrops dabieshanensis Huang et al. 2012: Evidence from a Mitochondrial Gene Sequence Analysis

Aimed to evaluate the phylogenetic position of the recently described Protobothrops dabieshanensis Huang et al. （2012）, phylogenic relationships of 12 species within Protobothrops based on four mtDNA gene fragments （12S RNA, 16S RNA, ND4 and Cyt b） were reconstructed in our study. The result indicates a clade composed ofP dabiesha- nensis, P. jerdonii and P xiangchengsis with strong support. The genetic distance among P dabieshanensis, P jerdonii and P xiangchengsis was much lower than other congeners. Based on the data from the phylogenetic analysis and pre- viously described morphological differences, we conclude that P dabieshanensis is a valid species with close affinities to P jerdonii and P xiangchengsis.
