Preprocessing of 2-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis Images Applied to Proteomic Analysis： A Review

Various methods and specialized software programs are available for processing two- dimensional gel electrophoresis （2-DGE） images. However, due to the anomalies present in these images, a reliable, automated, and highly reproducible system for 2-DGE image analysis has still not been achieved. The most common anomalies found in 2-DGE images include vertical and hor- izontal streaking, fuzzy spots, and background noise, which greatly complicate computational anal- ysis. In this paper, we review the preprocessing techniques applied to 2-DGE images for noise reduction, intensity normalization, and background correction. We also present a quantitative comparison of non-linear filtering techniques applied to synthetic gel images, through analyzing the performance of the filters under specific conditions. Synthetic proteins were modeled into a two-dimensional Gaussian distribution with adjustable parameters for changing the size, intensity, and degradation. Three types of noise were added to the images： Gaussian, Rayleigh, and exponen- tial, with signal-to-noise ratios （SNRs） ranging 8-20 decibels （dB）. We compared the performanceof wavelet, contourlet, total variation （TV）, and wavelet-total variation （WTTV） techniques using parameters SNR and spot efficiency. In terms of spot efficiency, contourlet and TV were more sen- sitive to noise than wavelet and WTTV. Wavelet worked the best for images with SNR ranging 10- 20 dB, whereas WTTV performed better with high noise levels. Wavelet also presented the best per- formance with any level of Gaussian noise and low levels （20-14 dB） of Rayleigh and exponential noise in terms of SNR. Finally, the performance of the non-linear filtering techniques was evaluated using a real 2-DGE image with previously identified proteins marked. Wavelet achieved the best detection rate for the real image.

In the last decades, few days a week, several city centres in Italyare closed at vehicular traffic in order to limit the presence of particulate matter, often exceeding the limits set by law [1,2]. The particulate matter have an impact on human health [3,4], in the cultural heritage and natural environment deterioration [5,6]. Many studies have been the carried out in air monitoring in urban areas while the targeted surveys to assess the impact on air quality of snow dispersion for ski activities are rare. Thanks to the Autonomous Province of Trento it has been possible to sample the snowpack in some ski areas inItalyand thanks to stratigraphic profiles it has been possible to observe variations of the chemical composition over time. Natural contribution is strictly related to winds and currents movement, for this reason a deep knowledge of these factors can help in the determination of the prevalent trajectories during the year [7,8]. During a penetrometeric and stratigraphic profile on Presena glacier, the main nivo-meteorological features, air temperature and temperature inside the different layers of the snowpack have been measured. Some snow samples has been collected and analyzed by SEM-EDS, ICP-MS and IC. These qualitative and quantitative analyses allow to obtain chemical and mineralogical composition to define the emitting source.

Current cell-wall models assume no covalent bonding between cellulose and hemicelluloses such as xyloglu-can or mixed-linkageβ-D-glucan(MLG).However,Equisetum hetero-trans-β-glucanase(HTG)grafts cellu-lose onto xyloglucan oligosaccharides(XGOs)-and,we now show,xyloglucan polysaccharide-in vitro,thus exhibiting CXE(cellulose:xyloglucan endotransglucosylase)*** addition,HTG also catalyzes MLG-to-XGO bonding(MXE activity).In this study,we explored the CXE action of HTG in native plant cell walls and tested whether expansin exposes cellulose to HTG by disrupting hydrogen *** quantify and visu-alize CXE and MXE action,we assayed the sequential release of HTG products from cell walls pre-labeled with substrate *** demonstrated covalent cellulose--xyloglucan bonding in plant cell walls and showed that CXE and MXE action was up to 15%and 60%of total transglucanase action,respectively,and peaked in aging,strengthening tissues:CXE in xylem and cells bordering intercellular canals and MXE in *** bacterial expansin(EXLX1)strongly augmented CXE activity in *** and MXE ac-tion in living Equisetum structural tissues potentially strengthens stems,while expansin might augment the HTG-catalyzed CXE reaction,thereby allowing efficient CXE action in *** methods will enable surveys for comparable reactions throughout the plant ***,engineering similar hetero-polymer formation into angiosperm crop plants may improve certain agronomic traits such as lodging tolerance.

Retrospective matched cohort study of incidence rates and excess length of hospital stay owing to pressure injuries in an Asian setting

quantitative evaluation of multi-process collaborative operation in steelmaking–continuous casting sections

The quantitative evaluation of multi-process collaborative operation is of great significance for the improvement of production planning and scheduling in steelmaking–continuous casting sections(SCCSs). However, this evaluation is difficult since it relies on an in-depth understanding of the operating mechanism of SCCSs, and few existing methods can be used to conduct the evaluation, due to the lack of full-scale consideration of the multiple factors related to the production operation. In this study, three quantitative models were developed, and the multiprocess collaborative operation level was evaluated through the laminar-flow operation degree, the process matching degree, and the scheduling strategy availability degree. Based on the evaluation models for the laminar-flow operation and process matching levels, this study investigated the production status of two steelmaking plants, plants A and B, based on actual production data. The average laminar-flow operation(process matching) degrees of SCCSs were obtained as 0.638(0.610) and 1.000(0.759) for plants A and B, respectively, for the period of April to July 2019. Then, a scheduling strategy based on the optimization of the furnace-caster coordinating mode was suggested for plant A. Simulation experiments showed higher availability than the greedy-based and manual strategies. After the proposed scheduling strategy was applied,the average process matching degree of the SCCS of plant A increased by 4.6% for the period of September to November 2019. The multi-process collaborative operation level was improved with fewer adjustments and interruptions in casting.
