Morphometric studies of 3D micro CT-scanned images can provide insights into the evolution of the brain and sensory structures but such data are still scarce for the most diverse mammalian order of rodents.From reviewed and new data,we tested for convergence to extreme aridity and high elevation in the sensory and brain morphology of rodents,from morphometric data from micro-CT X-ray scans of 174 crania of 16 species of three distantly re-lated African murid(soft-furred mice,Praomyini,laminate-toothed rats,Otomyini,and gerbils,Gerbillinae)clades and one North American cricetid(deer mice and white-footed mice,Peromyscus)clade.Recent studies demon-strated convergent evolution acting on the oval window area of the cochlea(enlarged in extremely arid-adapted species of Otomyini and Gerbillinae)and on endocranial volume(reduced in high elevation taxa of Otomyini and Peromyscus).However,contrary to our predictions,we did notfind evidence of convergence in brain struc-ture to aridity,or in the olfactory/respiratory system(turbinate bones)to high elevation.Brain structure differed,particularly in the petrosal lobules of the cerebellum and the olfactory bulbs,between Otomyini and Gerbillinae,with extreme arid-adapted species in each clade being highly divergent(not convergent)from other species in the same clade.We observed greater“packing”of the maxillary turbinate bones,which have important respiratory functions,in Peromyscus mice from high and low elevations compared to the high-elevation African Praomyini,but more complex patterns within Peromyscus,probably related to trade-offs in respiratory physiology and heat exchange in the nasal epithelium associated with high-elevation adaptation.

The dynamics of populations of small mammals of Central Siberia was analyzed.The studies were carried out at the Yenisei ecological station“Mirnoye”of the A.N.Severtsov Institute of Ecology and evolution,Russian Academy of Sciences.The time series analysis was performed by the wavelet transform using the statistical data processing language R.In the 20th century,the dynamics of the population of the community and some of its constituent species(Sorex araneus;S.caecutiens;S.isodon;S.tundrensis;S.minutus;Craseomys rufocanus;Clethrionomys rutilus;Microtus oeconomus;M.agrestis)were characterized by a 4-year periodicity.The type of dynamics changed to noncyclic by the nineties,but by 2022,four species(S.araneus,S.isodon,C.rutilus,and M.oeconomus)and the community as a whole showed a tendency toward recovery of population cycles.The remaining species were characterized by consistently low numbers with irregular low amplitude fluctuations.

Juvenile survival is a key life-history influence on population dynamics and adaptive evolution.We analyzed the effects of individual chara-cteristics,early environment,and maternal investment on juvenile survival in a large solitary hibernating rodent-yellow ground squirrel Spermophilus fulvus using Cox mixed-effects models.Only 48%of weaned pups survived to dispersal and 17%survived to hibernation.Early life expectancy was primarily determined by individual characteristics and,to a lesser extent,by the early environment.The strongest and pos-itive predictor of juvenile survival was body mass which crucially affected mortality immediately after weaning.Males suffered higher mortality than females after the onset of dispersal;however,the overall difference between sexes was partly masked by high rates of mortality in the first days after emergence in both sexes.Later emerged juveniles had lower life expectancy than the earliest pups.The overall effect of local juvenile density was positive.Prolonged lactation did not enhance juvenile survival:Pups nursed longer survived shorter than the young nursed for a shorter period.Our findings support the hypothesis that females of S.fulvus cannot effectively regulate maternal expenditures to mitigate the effects of unfavorable conditions on their offspring.The strategy to deal with seasonal time constraints on life history in female S.fulvus suggests an early termination of maternal care at the cost of juvenile quality and survival.This female reproductive strategy corresponds to a"fast-solitary"life of folivorous desert-dwelling S.fulvus and other solitary ground squirrels with prolonged hibernation.

Power-law patterns appear in a variety of natural systems on the modern Earth;nevertheless,whether such behaviors appeared in the deep-time environment has rarely been studied. Isotopic records in sedimentary rocks, which are widely used to reconstruct the geological/geochemical conditions in paleoenvironments and the evolutionary trajectories of biogeochemical cycles, offer an opportunity to investigate power laws in ancient geological systems. In this study, I focus on the Phanerozoic sedimentary records of carbon, oxygen, sulfur, and strontium isotopes, which have well documented and extraordinarily comprehensive datasets. I perform statistical analyses on these datasets and show that the variations in the sedimentary records of the four isotopes exhibit power-law behaviors. The exponents of these power laws range between 2.2 and 2.9;this narrow interval indicates that the variations in carbon, oxygen, sulfur, and strontium isotopes likely belong to the same universality class, suggesting that these systematic power-law patterns are governed by universal, scale-free mechanisms. I then derive a general form for these power laws from a minimalistic model based on basic physical principles and geosystem-specific assumptions, which provides an interpretation for the power-law patterns from the perspective of thermodynamics. The fundamental mechanisms regulating such patterns might have been ubiquitous in paleoenvironments, implying that similar power-law behaviors may exist in the sedimentary records of other isotopes.

Genomes are incredibly dynamic within diverse eukaryotes and programmed genome rearrangements(PGR)play important roles in generating genomic diversity.However,genomes and chromosomes in metazoans are usually large in size which prevents our understanding of the origin and evolution of PGR.To expand our knowledge of genomic diversity and the evolutionary origin of complex genome rearrangements,we focus on ciliated protists(ciliates).Ciliates are single-celled eukaryotes with highly fragmented somatic chromosomes and massively scrambled germline genomes.PGR in ciliates occurs extensively by removing massive amounts of repetitive and selfish DNA elements found in the silent germline genome dur-ing development of the somatic genome.We report the partial germline genomes of two spirotrich ciliate species,namely Strombidium cf.sulcatum and Halteria grandinella,along with the most compact and highly fragmented somatic genome for S.cf.sulcatum.We provide the first insights into the genome rearrangements of these two species and compare these features with those of other ciliates.Our analyses reveal:(1)DNA sequence loss through evolution and during PGR in S.cf.sulcatum has combined to produce the most compact and efficient nanochromosomes observed to date;(2)the compact,transcriptome-like somatic genome in both species results from extensive removal of a relatively large number of shorter germline-specific DNA sequences;(3)long chromosome breakage site motifs are duplicated and retained in the somatic genome,revealing a complex model of chromosome fragmentation in spirotrichs;(4)gene scrambling and alternative pro-cessing are found throughout the core spirotrichs,offering unique opportunities to increase genetic diversity and regulation in this group.

As a promising candidate for the next generation energy storage system,rechargeable lithium-oxygen batteries(LOBs)still face substantial challenges caused by insulating discharge products that preclude their practical application.Exploring highly efficient cathode catalysts capable of facilitating formation/decomposition of discharge products is considered as an essential approach towards high performance LOBs.Herein,Pd decorated Te nanowires(Pd@Te NWs)were synthesized as advanced catalyst in LOBs to maximize Pd utilization and achieve synergistic effect,in which Pd clusters were uniformly grown on Te substrate though regulating the Pd:Te ratio.Meanwhile,Pd@Te nanowires assembled into an interpenetrating network-like structure by vacuum filtration and employed as flexible cathode,enabling LOBs achieved an ultralong 190 cycles stability and a superior specific capacity of 3.35 mAh·cm^(-2).Experimental studies and density functional theory(DFT)calculations reveal the excellent catalytic ability of Pd@Te and synergistic catalytic mechanism of Pd and Te,in which uniform electron distribution,extensive electron exchange,and large adsorption distance between Pd cluster and discharge products promote homogeneous adsorption/desorption of discharge products,while the high adsorption energy of Te substrate for Li species reduces the initial dynamical energy barrier during discharging process.The current work provides viable strategy to design composite catalysts for flexible cathode of LOBs with synergistic catalytic effects.

The remarkable uplift of the Tibetan Plateau in the Neogene had great impacts on the climate and environment of East Asia and even the world.Therefore,establishment of the Neogene stratigraphic framework of the Tibetan Plateau is of great significance to research in various fields of geosciences.Based on marine sediments,the international chronostratigraphic system of the Neogene is divided into six stages in the Miocene and two stages in the Pliocene.Since the beginning of the Cenozoic,the share of terrestrial strata on continents has increased rapidly.By the Neogene,it had far exceeded that of marine strata,and almost all deposits on the Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas were terrestrial strata.In China,the Miocene includes five stages and the Pliocene includes two stages.Except for the Tunggurian of the Miocene,which has a lower boundary at 15 Ma,the other stages have the same paleomagnetic definitions and time intervals as the corresponding international marine stages.Mammalian fossils play a very important role in the division and correlation of Cenozoic terrestrial strata,and rodent,carnivore,proboscidean,perissodactyl and artiodactyl fossils are especially important in Neogene terrestrial biostratigraphy.There are many basins with well-exposed strata and abundant mammalian fossils in the Tibetan Plateau.The lower boundary stratotype sections of the Neogene Xiejian and Bahean stages are located respectively in the Xining and Linxia basins,and there are precise paleomagnetic dates in coordination with mammalian fossils.The lower boundary stratotypes of other stages can also be effectively determined in the Tibetan Plateau.Many first appearing mammalian genera in East Asia also appeared in the Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas,especially in the Linxia Basin on the northeast margin and in the Siwaliks on the southwest margin.Among them,Prodeinotherium first appeared at the bottom of the Miocene in the Siwaliks,and the earliest Hipparion of the Old World first appeared at the bottom of the Bahea

Three-stage niobium mineralization at Bayan Obo, China

The Chinese Bayan Obo deposit is a world-class rare earth element(REE) deposit with considerable niobium(Nb) and iron(Fe) resources. A complete genetic understanding on all metals is fundamental for establishing genetic models at Bayan Obo. With extensive research being focused on REE enrichment, the timing and controls of Nb enrichment remain unresolved at Bayan Obo, which is mainly due to the challenges in dating, i.e. multistage thermal events, fine-grained minerals with complex textures and the rare occurrence of uranium-enriched minerals with mature dating methods. Based on robust geological and petrographic frameworks, here we conducted ion probe uranium-lead(U-Pb) dating of ferrocolumbite to unravel the timing, hence the genesis of Nb mineralization. Three types of hydrothermal ferrocolumbites—key Nb-bearing minerals—are identified based on their textures and mineral assemblages. They yield U-Pb ages of 1312 ± 47 Ma(n = 99), 438 ± 7 Ma(n = 93), and 268 ± 5 Ma(n = 19), respectively. In line with deposit geology, we tentatively link the first, second and third stage Nb mineralization to Mesoproterozoic carbonatite magmatism, ubiquitous early Paleozoic hydrothermal activity, and Permian granitic magmatism, respectively. While quantifying the contribution of metal endowment from each stage requires further investigation, our new dates highlight that multi-stage mineralization is critical for Nb enrichment at Bayan Obo, which may also have implications for the enrichment mechanism of Nb in REE deposits in general.

Autotomy,the self-induced loss of a body part,is one of the most extreme forms of defense against predation.It occurs in a variety of animal taxa,including both vertebrates and invertebrates(Fleming et al.2007).The most commonly seen examples are spiders,lizards,and crustaceans(Emberts et al.2019)(Fig.1).By performing the autotomy behavior,animals can effectively survive predation or non-predatory entrapment,or reduce the cost of injury(Emberts et al.2019;Wuthrich et al.2022).
