Gut microbiota-astrocyte axis: new insights into age-related cognitive decline

With the rapidly aging human population,age-related cognitive decline and dementia are becoming increasingly prevalent *** is considered the main risk factor for cognitive decline and acts through alterations in the composition of the gut microbiota,microbial metabolites,and the functions of *** microbiota–gut–brain axis has been the focus of multiple studies and is closely associated with cognitive *** article provides a comprehensive review of the specific changes that occur in the composition of the gut microbiota and microbial metabolites in older individuals and discusses how the aging of astrocytes and reactive astrocytosis are closely related to age-related cognitive decline and neurodegenerative *** article also summarizes the gut microbiota components that affect astrocyte function,mainly through the vagus nerve,immune responses,circadian rhythms,and microbial ***,this article summarizes the mechanism by which the gut microbiota–astrocyte axis plays a role in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s *** findings have revealed the critical role of the microbiota–astrocyte axis in age-related cognitive decline,aiding in a deeper understanding of potential gut microbiome-based adjuvant therapy strategies for this condition.

Difference of the gut microbiota of premature ovarian insufficiency in two traditional Chinese syndromes

PURPOSe: to investigate the differences in gut microbial characteristics between two traditional Chinese syndromes of premature ovarian insufficiency(POI). MetHODS: Forty women with POI were recruited from the department of traditional Chinese Medicine at shenzhen Maternity and Child Healthcare hospital between June and December 2020. Women with POI were divided into the kidney deficiency and blood stasis syndrome(SDBS) and Qi and blood deficiency syndrome(QBDS) groups. Gut microbial community profiles were analyzed by 16S rRnA gene sequencing using an Illumina Mi Seq system. A retrospective study comparing hormone levels and gut microbiota information was performed between the SDBS and QBDS groups. ReSULtS: Compared with the QBDS group, the serum levels of estradiol(e2) and anti-Müllerian hormone(AMH) were significantly decreased in the SDBS group. the quantities of Adlercreutzia, eggerthella, Klebsiella, and Paraprevotella significantly increased in the SDBS group, whereas Lactobacillus decreased significantly. Moreover, alterations in the microbiome in the SDBS and QBDS groups were closely related to the levels of e2 and AMH. the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the classification of the two syndromes by the gut microbiome was 0.71. COnCLUSIOnS: there were significant differences in the dominant microbiota between the SDBS and QBDS groups, and the change in Proteobacteria in the QBDS group was more significant. the characteristics of gut microbiota help us differentiate between the SDBS and QBDS groups, which may provide a basis for the objectification of tCM syndrome types.

In the era of Metaverse and virtual reality(VR)/augmented reality(AR),capturing finger motion and force interactions is crucial for immersive human-machine *** study introduces a flexible electronic skin for the index finger,addressing coupled perception of both state and process in dynamic tactile *** device integrates resistive and giant magnetoelastic sensors,enabling detection of surface pressure and finger joint *** e-skin identifies three phases of finger action:bending state,dynamic normal force and tangential force(sweeping).the system comprises resistive carbon nanotubes(Cnt)/polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)films for bending sensing and magnetoelastic sensors(ndFeB particles,ecoFlex,and flexible coils)for pressure *** inward bending resistive sensor,based on self-assembled microstructures,exhibits directional specificity with a response time under 120 ms and bending sensitivity from 0°to 120°.the magnetoelastic sensors demonstrate specific responses to frequency and deformation magnitude,as well as sensitivity to surface roughness during sliding and material *** system’s capability is demonstrated through tactile-based bread type and condition recognition,achieving 92%*** intelligent patch shows broad potential in enhancing interactions across various fields,from VR/AR interfaces and medical diagnostics to smart manufacturing and industrial automation.

Anticipation for hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) is an advanced targeted therapeuticapproach for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common type ofprimary liver cancer. HAIC has demonstrated significant potential in managingadvanced HCC, particularly in regions with high prevalence rates. Despite itspromise, several challenges and areas for future research remain. Clinical studieshave substantiated the efficacy of HAIC in enhancing survival outcomes forpatients with advanced hepatic carcinoma. notably, combination therapiesinvolving immune checkpoint inhibitors, such as lenvatinib and programmeddeath-1 inhibitors, have shown substantial improvements in median overallsurvival and progression-free survival compared to systemic *** combination therapies have also exhibited superior response rates anddisease control, with manageable and often less severe adverse events relative tosystemic treatments. this article is based on the review by Zhou et al and aims todiscuss the current status and future directions in the treatment of HCC, emphasizingthe role of HAIC and its integration with novel therapeutic agents.

the estimated annual incidence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest(OHCA)is approximately 120 cases per 100000 inhabitants in western *** the rates of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR)and use of automated external defibrillator are increasing,the likelihood of survival to hospital discharge is no more than 8%.to date,various devices and methods have been utilized in the initial CPR approach targeting to improve survival and neurological outcomes in OHCA *** aim of this review is to discuss strategies that facilitate resuscitation,increase the chance to achieve return to spontaneous circulation and improve survival to hospital discharge and neurological outcomes in the prehospital setting.

Synergistic effect of silicon availability and salinity on metal adsorption in a common estuarine diatom

Increasing nitrogen and phosphorus discharge and decreasing sediment input have made silicon(Si)a limiting element for diatoms in *** in nutrient structure and salinity fluctuation can greatly affect metal uptake by estuarine ***,the combined effects of Si and salinity on metal accumulation in these diatoms have not been *** this study,we aimed to investigate how salinity and Si availability combine to influence the adsorption of metals by a widely distributed diatom Phaeodactylum *** data indicate that replete Si and low salinity in seawater can enhance cadmium and copper adsorption onto the diatom *** the single-cell level,surface potential was a dominant factor determining metal adsorption,while surface roughness also contributed to the highermetal loading capacity at lower *** a combination of noninvasive micro-test technology,atomic force microscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,we demonstrate that the diversity and abundance of the functional groups embedded in diatom cell walls vary with salinity and Si *** results in a change in the cell surface potential and transient metal *** study provides novel mechanisms to explain the highly variable metal adsorption capacity of a model estuarine diatom.

BACKGROUnD Regulator of G protein signaling(RGS)proteins participate in tumor formation and metastasis by acting on theα-subunit of heterotrimeric G *** speci-fic effect of RGS,particularly RGS4,on the progression of gastric cancer(GC)is not yet *** to explore the role and underlying mechanisms of action of RGS4 in GC *** the prognostic significance of RGS4 in GC was analyzed using bioinformatics based public databases and verified by immunohistochemistry and quantitative polymerase chain reaction in 90 patients with *** assays were employed to assess the carcinogenic impact of RGS4,and the mechanism of its possible influence was detected by western blot analysis.A nude mouse xenograft model was established to study the effects of RGS4 on GC growth in *** RGS4 was highly expressed in GC tissues compared with matched adjacent normal *** RGS4 expression was correlated with increased tumor-node-metastasis stage,increased tumor grade as well as poorer overall survival in patients with *** experiments demonstrated that RGS4 knockdown suppressed GC cell proliferation,migration and ***,xenograft experiments confirmed that RGS4 silencing significantly inhibited tumor ***,RGS4 knockdown resulted in reduced phosphorylation levels of focal adhesion kinase,phosphatidyl-inositol-3-kinase,and protein kinase B,decreased vimentin and n-cadherin,and elevated *** High RGS4 expression in GC indicates a worse prognosis and RGS4 is a prognostic ***4 influences tumor progression via the focal adhesion kinase/phosphatidyl-inositol-3-kinase/protein kinase B pathway and epithelial-mesenchymal transition.
