this paper presents a novel augmented reality(AR)-based neurosurgical training simulator which provides a very natural way for surgeons to learn neurosurgical *** simulation with bimanual haptic interaction is integrated in this work to provide a simulated environment for users to achieve holographic guidance for pre-operative *** achieve the AR guidance,the simulator should precisely overlay the 3D anatomical information of the hidden target organs in the patients in real *** this regard,the patient-specific anatomy structures are reconstructed from segmented brain magnetic resonance *** propose a registration method for precise mapping of the virtual and real *** addition,the simulator provides bimanual haptic interaction in a holographic environment to mimic real brain tumor *** this study,we conduct AR-based guidance validation and a user study on the developed simulator,which demonstrate the high accuracy of our AR-based neurosurgery simulator,as well as the AR guidance mode’s potential to improve neurosurgery by simplifying the operation,reducing the difficulty of the operation,shortening the operation time,and increasing the precision of the operation.

Biophotonics is an exciting and fast-expanding frontier which involves the fusion of advanced photonics and *** has not only created many novel methodologies for biomedical research,but also achieved many significant results as an *** to femtosecond(fs)laser technologies,important progresses have been made regarding the manipulation,imaging,and engineering of biological samples ranging from single molecules to tissues in the last 20 *** ultrashort pulses at near-infrared band provide many advantages:high nonlinear efficiency,low absorption by biological samples,high spatial and temporal resolution and confinement,and low *** are noninvasive and easy to *** the mechanism of how fs laser pulses interact with cells remains unclear,experimental results have shown that they could open up the cell membrane and hence made optical transfection and optical cell fusion *** this review,some of the seminal works on transfection and cell fusion by fs lasers are *** ideas behind and the experimental details will be described together with a highlight on their ***,the thermal effect is analyzed based on multiphoton excitation and plasma formation in an aqueous environment to explain the nontoxic characteristic of fs laser ***,some applications of fs laser induced transfection and cellcell fusion with potential major impact in biomedical sciences are proposed.

numerical simulation of turbulent mixing process of polydisperse quartz particle(particle size distribution in the range of 0.1-0.4 mm)flow with Ar and Ar-H2 plasma generated by radio frequency inductively coupled plasma(RF-ICP)torch has been *** approximate two-stage approach has been proposed to calculate the spatial-temporal distributions of temperature and resulting thermal stress in quartz particles during dynamic heating in polydisperse plasma *** influence of working gas compositions,particle size distributions,injection angle and flow rate of carrier gas on the thermal destruction conditions of quartz particles has been determined under different particle feed *** is found that all the solid quartz particles(0.1-0.4 mm)could be thermal destructed without overheating in RF-ICP torch system,when the hydrogen volume fraction in working gases is more than 1.5%-2%and particle feed rate is in a certain *** values of the maximum and minimum feed rates have been determined under different hydrogen volume *** optimal particle injection angle and flow rate of carrier gas is found around 50°-60°and 160-220 slpm,under which the value of maximum equivalent thermal stress in quartz particles is highest.

the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFIR) or the small conductance cAMP-activated chlo-ride channel encoded by the CFtR gene has been shown to play an important role in the formation of the epididymalfluid microenvironment. Recent work in our laboratory has shown that this protein is also expressed by developing germcells indicating a role of this protein in spermatogenesis. In view of the fact that the CFtR gene has a far reaching andwidespread effect on human reproduction, understanding the role of CFtR in the male reproductive tissues and its inter-vention by pharmacological agents can open a new avenue of research into the development of novel male contracep-tives. Olfactory ensheathing glia promote axonal regeneration in the mammalian central nervous system,including retinal ganglion cell axonal growth through the injured optic ***,it is unknown whether olfactory ensheathing glia also have neuroprotective *** ensheathing glia express brain-derived neurotrophic factor,one of the best neuroprotectants for axotomized retinal ganglion ***,we aimed to investigate the neuroprotective capacity of olfactory ensheating glia after optic nerve *** ensheathing glia cells from an established rat immortalized clonal cell line,teG3,were intravitreally injected in intact and axotomized retinas in syngeneic and allogeneic mode with or without microglial inhibition or immunosuppressive *** and gene expression analyses were *** bulb-derived primary olfactory ensheathing glia and teG3 express major histocompatibility complex classⅡ*** and syngenically transplanted teG3 cells survived in the vitreous for up to 21 days,forming an *** axotomized retinas,only the allogeneic teG3 transplant rescued retinal ganglion cells at 7 days but not at 21 *** these retinas,microglial anatomical activation was higher than after optic nerve crush *** intact retinas,both transplants activated microglial cells and caused retinal ganglion cell death at 21 days,a loss that was higher after allotransplantation,triggered by pyroptosis and partially rescued by microglial inhibition or ***,neuroprotection of axotomized retinal ganglion cells did not improve with these *** different neuroprotective properties,different toxic effects,and different responses to microglial inhibitory treatments of olfactory ensheathing glia in the retina depending on the type of transplant highlight the importance of thorough preclinical studies to explore these variables.

In this study,we provide evidence that oil sands process-affected waters(OSPW)contain factors that activate the antimicrobial and proinflammatory responses of immune ***,using the murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cell line,we establish the bioactivity of two different OSPW samples and their isolated ***,we directly compared the bioactivity of two pilot scale demonstration pit lake(DPL)water samples,which included expressed water from treated tailings(termed the before water capping sample;BWC)as well as an after water capping(AWC)sample consisting of a mixture of expressed water,precipitation,upland runoff,coagulated OSPW and added *** inflammatory(*** activating)bioactivity was associated with the AWC sample and its organic fraction(OF),whereas the BWC sample had reduced bioactivity that was primarily associated with its inorganic fraction(IF).Overall,these results indicate that at non-toxic exposure doses,the RAW 264.7 cell line serves as an acute,sensitive and reliable biosensor for the screening of inflammatory constituents within and among discrete OSPW samples.

Overcoming maladaptive plasticity through plastic compensation

Most species evolve within fluctuating environments, and have developed adaptations to meet the challenges posed by environmental heterogeneity. One such adaptation is phenotypic plasticity, or the ability of a single genotype to produce multiple environmentally-induced phenotypes. Yet, not all plasticity is adaptive. Despite the renewed interest in adaptive phenotypic plas- ticity and its consequences for evolution, much less is known about maladaptive plasticity. However, maladaptive plasticity is likely an important driver of phenotypic similarity among populations living in different environments. this paper traces four strategies for overcoming maladaptive plasticity that result in phenotypic similarity, two of which involve genetic changes （standing genetic variation, genetic compensation） and two of which do not （standing epigenetic variation, plastic compensation）. Plastic compensation is defined as adaptive plasticity overcoming maladaptive plasticity. In particular, plastic compensation may increase the likelihood of genetic compensation by facilitating population persistence. We provide key terms to disentangle these aspects of phenotypic plasticity and introduce examples to reinforce the potential importance of plastic compensation for under- standing evolutionary change
