Prediction of Damping Capacity Demand in Seismic Base Isolators via Machine Learning

Base isolators used in buildings provide both a good acceleration reduction and structural vibration control *** base isolators may lose their damping capacity over time due to environmental or dynamic *** deterioration of them requires the determination of the maintenance and repair needs and is important for the long-termisolator *** this study,an artificial intelligence prediction model has been developed to determine the damage and maintenance-repair requirements of isolators as a result of environmental effects and dynamic factors over *** the developed model,the required damping capacity of the isolator structure was estimated and compared with the previously placed isolator capacity,and the decrease in the damping property was tried to be *** this purpose,a data set was created by collecting the behavior of structures with single degrees of freedom(SDOF),different stiffness,damping ratio and natural period isolated from the foundation under far fault *** data is divided into 5 different damping classes varying between 10%and 50%.Machine learning model was trained in damping classes with the data on the structure’s response to random seismic *** a result of the isolator behavior under randomly selected earthquakes,the recorded motion and structural acceleration of the structure against any seismic vibration were examined,and the decrease in the damping capacity was estimated on a class *** performance loss of the isolators,which are separated according to their damping properties,has been tried to be determined,and the reductions in the amounts to be taken into account have been determined by *** the developed prediction model,using various supervised machine learning classification algorithms,the classification algorithm providing the highest precision for the model has been *** the results are examined,it has been determined that the damping of the isolator structure with the

The influence of the leading-edge angle of subgrade on the aerodynamic loads of a high-speed train in a wind tunnel

The purpose of this study is to establish the correlation between the boundary layer over the subgrade and the aerodynamic loads act-ing on the train model in conventional wind tunnel ***,flow characteristics around the subgrade with different leading-edge angles(15°,30°and 45°)are investigated through the particle image velocimetry(PIV)experimental test ***,wind tunnel tests of the aerodynamic performance of a high-speed train are carried *** results are compared with previous experimental data obtained by moving model *** show that,due to the presence of a boundary layer,the pressure acting on the lower part of the train head decreases,while other locations are not significantly *** is the reason for the reduction of the aerodynamic drag and lift on the *** addition,the reduction effects become more obvious when the thickness of the boundary layer *** experimental results obtained could serve as a calibration of aerodynamic forces for wind tunnel tests on high-speed trains.

ELECTROACTIVE AND NANOSTRUCTURED POLYMERS AS SCAFFOLD MATERIALS FOR NEURONAL AND CARDIAC TISSUE ENGINEERING

Conducting polymer, polyaniline （PANI）, has been studied as a novel electroactive and electrically conductive material for tissue engineering applications. The biocompatibility of the conductive polymer can be improved by （i） covalently grafting various adhesive peptides onto the surface of prefabricated conducting polymer films or into the polymer structures during the synthesis, （ii） co-electrospinning or blending with natural proteins to form conducting nanofibers or films, and （iii） preparing conducting polymers using biopolymers, such as collagen, as templates. In this paper, we mainly describe and review the approaches of covalently attaching oligopeptides to PANI and electrospinning PANI-gelatin blend nanofibers. The employment of such modified conducting polymers as substrates for enhanced cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation has been investigated with neuronal PC-12 cells and H9c2 cardiac myoblasts. For the electrospun PANI- gelatin fibers, depending on the concentrations of PANI, H9c2 cells initially displayed different morphologies on the fibrous substrates, but after one week all cultures reached confluence of similar densities and morphologies. Furthermore, we observed, that conductive PANI, when maintained in an aqueous physiologic environment, retained a significant level of electrical conductivity for at least 100 h, even though this conductivity was decreasing over time. Preliminary data show that the application of micro-current stimulates the differentiation of PC-12 cells. All the results demonstrate the potential for using PANI as an electroactive polymer in the culture of excitable cells and open the possibility of using this material as an electroactive scaffold for cardiac and/or neuronal tissue engineering applications that require biocompatibility of conductive polymers.

Assessment of cerebral oxygenation response to hemodialysis using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS):Challenges and solutions

To date,the clinical use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS)to detect cerebral ischemia has been largely limited to surgical settings,where motion artifacts are *** this study,we present novel techniques to address the challenges of using NIRS to monitor ambu-latory patients with kidney disease during approximately eight hours of hemodialysis(HD)*** with end-stage kidney disease who require HD are at higher risk for cognitive impairment and dementia than age-matched *** studies have suggested that HD-related declines in cerebral blood flow might explain some of the adverse outcomes of HD ***,there are currently no established paradigms for monitoring cerebral per-fusion in real-time during HD *** this study,we used NIRS to assess cerebral hemo-dynamic responses among 95 prevalent HD patients during two consecutive HD *** observed substantial signal attenuation in our predominantly Black patient cohort that required probe *** also observed consistent motion artifacts that we addressed by devel-oping a novel NIRS methodology,called the HD cerebral oxygen demand algorithm(HD-CODA),to identify episodes when cerebral oxygen demand might be outpacing supply during HD *** then examined the association between a summary measure of time spent in cerebral deoxygenation,derived using the HD-CODA,and hemodynamic and treatment-related *** found that this summary measure was associated with intradialytic mean arterial pressure,heart rate,and volume *** studies should use the HD-CODA to implement studies of real-time NIRS monitoring for incident dialysis patients,over longer time frames,and in other dialysis modalities.

Artificial nesting habitats as a conservation strategy for turtle populations experiencing global change

Diamondback terrapins(Malaclemys terrapin)inhabit estuaries in eastern USA and may tolerate salinity of seawater for short *** North American estuaries are adversely affected by anthropogenic impacts,such as pollution,dredging and invasion by non-native *** nesting areas have been altered or destroyed,causing terrapins to nest on roadsides and artificial islands made of dredged substrate from bottom *** by non-native plants may suppress development and reduce survival of *** Barnegat Bay,New Jersey,USA,there is a mosaic of natural and degraded terrapin nesting *** investigated the effects of dredge soil and shade on the hatching success of diamondback terrapins to determine whether nesting habitat could be increased by using dredged bottom *** year 1,unshaded nests in natural loamy-sand had the highest hatching success(55.2%),while nests in dredge soil produced no *** year 2,nests in unshaded loamy-sand had a hatching success of 85.3%,whereas those in dredge soil,aged 1 year,had a hatching success of 59.4%.Dredge soil improved as an incubation substrate after aging 1 year by the washout of *** temperatures were generally cool and produced mostly male *** dredge soil may provide suitable nesting substrates for diamondback terrapins if used after one year,and may be particularly beneficial if used for constructing islands that provide new nesting sites with reduced access of mammalian predators.

Effects of disturbance on small mammal community structure in the New Jersey Pinelands, USA

We compared small mammal community composition among undisturbed habitats and habitats disturbed by military operations on Warren Grove Gunnery Range(WGR)in the New Jersey *** is one of the largest tracts of protected land within this globally rare *** in the form of fire,mowing,soil disruption and logging has had a large effect on small mammal occurrence and *** the 14 small mammal species that occur in the Pinelands,9 live on WGR,including large populations of the southern bog lemming(Synaptomys cooperi Baird,1858)and meadow jumping mouse[Zapus hudsonius(Zimmermann,1780)].Simpson’s Index of Diversity was 0 for most disturbed sites and was generally greater in wetlands than in ***-footed mouse[Peromyscus leucopus(Rafinesque,1818)]was the most common species on WGR and had a dominant effect on species diversity and community similarity *** dominated upland habitats and was the only species to occur in several disturbed habitats,whereas all 9 species occurred in *** components analysis indicated that most variation in species diversity was explained by disturbance and differences between upland and wetland habitats,due to presence of white-footed mice in disturbed and upland *** jumping mice,southern bog lemmings and red-back voles[Myodes gapperi(Vigors,1830)]were positively correlated with wetland habitats,and pine voles[Microtus pinetorum(Le Conte,1830)],short-tail shrews[Blarina brevicauda(Say,1823)]and eastern chipmunks[Tamias striatus(Linnaeus,1758)]were associated with *** heterogeneity at WGR,including extensive undisturbed wetlands and uplands supported a rich diversity of small mammal species.

Free-Standing α-MoO_(3)/Ti_(3)C_(2) MXene Hybrid Electrode in Water-in-Salt Electrolytes

While transition-metal oxides such as α-MoO_(3)provide high capacity,their use is limited by modest electronic conductivity and electrochemical instability in aqueous ***-dimensional(2D)MXenes,offer metallic conductivity,but their capacitance is limited in aqueous *** of partially solvated cations into Ti_(3)C_(2)MXene from lithium-based water-in-salt(WIS)electrolytes enables charge storage at positive potentials,allowing a wider potential window and higher ***,we demonstrate that α-MoO_(3)/Ti_(3)C_(2)hybrids combine the high capacity of α-MoO_(3)and conductivity of Ti_(3)C_(2)in WIS(19.8 m LiCI)electrolyte in a wide1.8 V voltage *** voltammograms reveal multiple redox peaks from α-MoO_(3)in addition to the well-separated peaks of Ti_(3)C_(2)in the hybrid *** leads to a higher specific charge and a higher rate capability compared to a carbon and binder containing α-MoO_(3)*** results demonstrate that the addition of MXene to less conductive oxides eliminates the need for conductive carbon additives and binders,leads to a larger amount of charge stored,and increases redox capacity at higher *** addition,MXene encapsulated α-MoO_(3)showed improved electrochemical stability,which was attributed to the suppressed dissolution of α-MoO_(3).The work suggests that oxide/MXene hybrids are promising for energy storage.
