Epidemiology of community pre-hypertensive patients and related risk factors in Chengdu city

Protective Effects of α-Lipoic Acid on Vascular Oxidative Stress in Rats with Hyperuricemia

The aim of the present study was to observe the protective effects of α-lipoic acid(ALA)on vascular injury in rats with hyperuricemia(HUA).The ALA treatment groups(10,30 and 90 mg/kg,respectively)were administered with ALA via gavage for 2 ***,the levels of blood urea nitrogen(BUN),creatinine(CREA),uric acid(UA),total cholesterol(TC),high density lipoprotein-C(HDL-C)and low density lipoprotein-C(LDL-C)were measured;the activities of glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px),catalase(CAT),malonaldehyde(MDA),superoxide dismutase(SOD)and xanthine oxidase(XOD)were also *** thoracic aorta of rats in each experimental group was observed under a light microscope;ultrastructural analysis was *** and CAT protein contents were investigated by Western *** results revealed that:i)Compared with the model group,the levels of UA were decreased in the ALA groups and the levels of BUN,CREA,TC,and LDL-C decreased in the 30 and 90 mg/kg ALA groups(P<0.05);ii)compared with the model group,the activities of GSH-Px,SOD and XOD were increased and the levels of MDA were reduced in the 90 mg/kg ALA group (P<0.05);and iii)in the model and 10 mg/kg ALA groups,edema and shedding were observed in endothelial *** with the model and 10 mg/kg ALA groups,the 30 and 90 mg/kg ALA groups exhibited fewer swollen endothelial *** summary,the results of the present study indicated that HUA resulted in vascular oxidative stress injury and decreased the activity of antioxidative enzymes,which leads to endothelial cell damage and vascular *** may serve as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of HUA-induced endothelial dysfunction.

Investigation of lacrimal sac space-occupying lesions using color doppler ultrasound, computed tomography, and computed tomography dacryocystography

Population-based survey of prevalence,causes,and risk factors for blindness and visual impairment in an aging Chinese metropolitan population

AIM： To assess the prevalence, causes, and risk factors for blindness and visual impairment among elderly （〉60 years of age） Chinese people in a metropolitan area of Shanghai, China. METHODS： Random cluster sampling was conducted to identify participants among residents ≥60 years of age living in the Xietu Block, Xuhui District, Shanghai, China. Presenting visual acuity （PVA） and best-corrected visual acuity （BCVA） were checked by the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study （ETDRS） visual chart. All eligible participants underwent a comprehensive eye examination. Blindness and visual impairment were defined according to World health Organization （WHO） criteria. RESULTS： A total of 4190 persons （1688 men and 2502 women） participated in the study, and the response rate was 91.1%. Based on PVA, the prevalence of blindness was 1.1% and that of visual impairment was 7.6%. Based on BCVA, the prevalence of blindness and visual impairment decreased to 0.9% and 3.9%, respectively. Older （〉80 years of age） women, with low educational levels and smoking habits, exhibited a significantly greater chance for blindness and visual impairment than did those with high educational levels and no smoking habits （P〈0.05）. Based on PVA and BCVA, the main causes of blindness were cataract, myopic maculopathy, and age-related macular degeneration （AMD）. CONCLUSION： Our findings help to identify the population in need of intervention, to highlight the need for additional eye healthcare services in urban China.

Microbiological quality of roof tank water in an urban village in southeastern China

Urban villages are unique residential neighborhoods in urban areas in China. Roof tanks are their main form of water supply, and water quality deterioration might occur in this system because of poor hygienic conditions and maintenance. In this study, water samples were seasonally collected from an urban village to investigate the influence of roof tanks as an additional water storage device on the variation in the microbial community structure and pathogenic gene markers. Water stagnation in the roof tank induced significant decreases in chlorine(p community. It is worth noted that the sediment in the pipe will be agitated when the water supply is restored after the water outages, which can trigger an increase in turbidity and bacterial biomass. Overall, the findings provide practical suggestions for controlling microbiological health risks in roof tanks in urban villages.

Germline mutation analysis of hPMS2 gene in Chinese families with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer

AIM: To study the germline mutation of hPMS2 gene in 26 unrelated Chinese hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) probands and to fulfill the screening strategy for HNPCC in Chinese. METHODS: Genomic DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood. To avoid the interference of pseudogene in detection of the remaining 11 exons (exon 1-5, 9, 11-15), long-range polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was conducted to amplify the complete coding region of hPMS2 gene firstly. Then 1/8 of the PCR productswere used as template to amplify the individual exon respectively and DNA sequencing was done. Direct DNA sequencing of the conventional PCR products of exon 6, 7, 8 and 10 of hPMS2 gene was performed. The same analysis was made in 130 healthy persons without family histories of HNPCC to further investigate the pathological effects of the detected missense mutation. RESULTS: One HNPCC proband fulf illed Bethesda guidelines and was found to carry the germline mutation of hPMS2 gene, which has not been reported in Chinese HNPCC families. It was a missense mutation at c.1532C>T of exon 11. It was detected in three controls as well with an occurrence rate of 2.3% (3/130). Since it could not be found in the PMS2-single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) database, this missense mutation is a new SNP unreported up to date. Meanwhile, 260 reported SNPs of hPMS2 gene were detected in the 26 HNPCC probands. The 2nd and 5th exons were probably the hot SNP regions of hPMS2 gene in Chinese HNPCC families involving 53.1% of all reported SNP. CONCLUSION: The germline mutation of hPMS2 gene may be rare in Chinese HNPCC families. The 2nd and 5th exons are hot SNP regions of hPMS2 gene.

Background:Cryptosporidium *** an important intestinal protozoan causing diarrhea in humans,livestock,and wild *** infection remains a major public health issue,but its epidemiology in humans is still unclear,particularly in rural *** study was designed to determine the prevalence of and risk factors associated with Cryptosporidium infection in a rural southwestern Chinese ***:A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted among 687 residents of a small town in a Yi autonomous prefecture of southwest China in *** samples were examined using a broad set of quality-controlled diagnostic methods for hepatitis B virus(HBV)and human immunodeficiency virus(HIV).Stool specimens were processed using the modified acid-fast staining method,and microscopically examined for Cryptosporidium *** and multivariable analyses were performed to determine the risk factors associated with Cryptosporidium ***:The majority of the participants were Yi people with poor living conditions and unsatisfactory hygiene habits,and the study area was of very low socioeconomic *** the 615 individuals included in the analysis,14(2.3%)were HIV positive,51(8.3%)were infected with HBV,and 74(12.0%)had Cryptosporidium *** prevalences of HIV/HBV,HIV/Cryptosporidium,and HBV/Cryptosporidium co-infections were 0.3%,0.3%,and 1.8%,*** prevalence of HBV infection was higher in individuals with Cryptosporidium infection(χ^(2)=5.00,P=0.03).Owning livestock or poultry was an important risk factor for Cryptosporidium infection(aOR=2.27,95%CI:1.01-5.08,P<0.05).Cryptosporidium infection was significantly associated with HBV infection(aOR=3.42,95%CI:1.47-7.92,P<0.01),but not with HIV infection(aOR=0.57,95%CI:0.07-4.39,P=0.59).Conclusions:The prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection was high in the rural area of southwestern China that was investigated,and there was a significant association between HB
