Aim:To investigate the relationship between aquaporin-5(AQP5)expression andmucus overproduction in the airways of Chinese patients with chronic obstruc-tive pulmonary disease(COPD)and the correlation with pulmonary ***:Bronchial tissues were obtained from fiberoptic bronchoscopyand bronchial biopsy in West China Hospital from April to July ***-fivepatients were diagnosed as COPD patients,and another 20 were diagnosed as thecontrol *** expressions ofAQP5,mucin 5AC(MUC5AC),and mucin inbronchial tissues were detected by semiquantitative RT-PCR,in situ hybridization,and immunohistochemical and alcian blue-periodic acid-Schiff(AB-PAS)staining,***:Compared with the control group,an attenuated expres-sion of AQP5was detected throughout the bronchial tissues from patients withCOPD(P0.05).Simultaneously,increased staining of MUC5AC and mucus in submucosal glandswere noted(P0.05).The decreased expression of AQP5mRNA was correlatedwith forced expiratory volume in 1 s(FEV1)/forced vital capacity(FVC)(r=0.60,P<0.01),FEV1% predicted value(r=0.60,P<0.01),maximal expiratory flow in 50%vital capacity(V50)% predicted value(r=0.55,P<0.01),and maximal expiratory flowin 25% vital capacity(V25)% predicted value(r=0.45,P<0.01).The decreasedexpression was negatively correlated with MUC5AC mRNA of the epitheliumairways(r=-0.45,P<0.01)and the AB-PAS-stained area of submucosal glands(r=-0.61,P<0.01).The upregulation of MUC5AC mRNA correlated with the posi-tively AB-PAS-stained area of submucosal glands and correlated negativelywith FEV1/FVC(r=-0.53;P<0.01),FEV1% predicted value(r=-0.53;P<0.01),V50%predicted value(r=-0.48;P<0.01),and V25% predicted value(r=-0.4

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)is a‘highly transmissible respiratory pathogen,leading to severe multiorgan ***,knowledge regarding SARS-CoV-2-induced cellular alterations is *** this study,we report that SARSCoV-2 aberrantly elevates mitochondrial bioenergetics and activates the EGFR-mediated cell survival signal cascade during the early stage of viral ***-CoV-2 causes an increase in mitochondrial transmembrane potential via the SARS-CoV-2 RNAnucleocapsid cluster,thereby abnormally promoting mitochondrial elongation and the OXPHOS process,followed by enhancing ATP ***,SARS-CoV-2 activates the EGFR signal cascade and subsequently induces mitochondrial EGFR trafficking,contributing to abnormal OXPHOS process and viral *** EGFR inhibitors remarkably reduce SARS-CoV-2 propagation,among which vandetanib exhibits the highest antiviral *** of SARS-CoV-2-infected cells with vandetanib decreases SARS-CoV-2-induced EGFR trafficking to the mitochondria and restores SARS-CoV-2-induced aberrant elevation in OXPHOS process and ATP generation,thereby resulting in the reduction of SARS-CoV-2 ***,oral administration of vandetanib to SARS-CoV-2-infected hACE2 transgenic mice reduces SARS-CoV-2 propagation in lung tissue and mitigates SARS-CoV-2-induced lung *** also exhibits potent antiviral activity against various SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern,including alpha,beta,delta and omicron,in in vitro cell culture *** together,our findings provide novel insight into SARS-CoV-2-induced alterations in mitochondrial dynamics and EGFR trafficking during the early stage of viral infection and their roles in robust SARS-CoV-2 propagation,suggesting that EGFR is an attractive host target for combating COVID-19.

Diffuse malignant pleural mesothelioma （DMPM） is a rare thoracic malignancy, but its incidence isdramatically increasing worldwide as a result ot widespread use of asbestos. The World Health Organization classifies DMPM into three types： epithelioid, sarcomatoid, and biphasic types. DMPM remains suffering poor prognosis and the diagnosis should always be based on adequate, representative tissue samples. There still remains a considerable number of patients with DMPM who are misdiagnosed after a complete investigation including thoracoscopic biopsies.

This three-year study, based on the Guangzhou Institute of respiratory Disease （GRID）, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease （COPD） Biobank, was conducted in 36 COPD patients to estimate whether changes in levels of leukocytes, erythrocytes, hemoglobin, and platelets were related to changes in air pollutant concentration. Daily NO2 levels exhibited significant differences between baseline years and the 2010 Asian Game period. We observed significant reductions in leukocyte and neutrophils counts levels, by 15.51% and 23.01%, from pre-Asian Games to during-Asian Games, respectively. In the post-Asian Game period, most pollutants approximated pre-Asian Game period levels, and similar effects were demonstrated in leukocyte and neutrophil counts. For both items, we identified significant increases resulting from elevated NO2 at lag days 0-2/5-6. We concluded that reductions in pollutants during the intervention period were associated with inactivation of hematological events in COPD.
