Our society faces multiple daunting challenges including finding sustainable solutions towards climate change mitigation;efficient production of food,biofuels,and biomaterials;maximizing land-use efficiency;and enabling a sustainable *** can provide environmentally and economically sustainable solutions to these challenges due to their inherent capabilities for photosynthetic capture of atmospheric CO2,allocation of carbon to various organs and partitioning into various chemical forms,including contributions to total soil *** order to enhance crop productivity and optimize chemistry simultaneously in the above-and belowground plant tissues,transformative biosystems design strategies are *** research efforts will be required for accelerating the development of plant cultivars,genotypes,or varieties that are cooptimized in the contexts of biomass-derived fuels and/or materials aboveground and enhanced carbon sequestration ***,we briefly discuss significant knowledge gaps in our process understanding and the potential of synthetic biology in enabling advancements along the fundamental to applied research ***,a convergence of perspectives from academic,industrial,government,and consumer sectors will be needed to realize the potential merits of plant biosystems design for a carbon neutral bioeconomy.

Background:Preoperative patient selection in Associating Liver Partition and Portal vein ligation for Staged hepatectomy(ALPPS)is not always reliable with currently available scores,particularly in patients with primary liver *** study aims to(I)to determine whether comorbidities and patients characteristics are a risk factor in ALPPS and(II)to create a score predicting 90-day mortality ***:Thirteen high-volume centers participated in this retrospective multicentric study.A risk analysis based on patient characteristics,underlying disease and procedure type was performed to identify risk factors and model the Comprehensive ALPPS Preoperative Risk Assessment(CAPRA)score.A nonparametric receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to estimate the predictive ability of our score against the Charlson Comorbidity Index(CCI),the age-adjusted CCI(aCCI),the ALPPS risk score before Stage 1(ALPPS-RS1)and Stage 2(ALPPS-RS2).The model was internally validated applying ***:A total of 451 patients were *** was 14.4%.The CAPRA score is calculated based on the following formula:(0.1×age)−(2×BSA)+1(in the presence of primary liver tumor)+1(in the presence of severe cardiovascular disease)+2(in the presence of moderate or severe diabetes)+2(in the presence of renal disease)+2(if classic ALPPS is planned).The predictive ability was 0.837 for the CAPRA score,0.443 for CCI,0.519 for aCCI,0.693 for ALPPS-RS1 and 0.807 for *** 1,000 cycles of bootstrapping the C statistic was *** accuracy plot revealed a cut-off for optimal prediction of postoperative mortality of ***:Comorbidities play an important role in ALPPS and should be carefully considered when planning the *** assessing the patient’s preoperative condition in relation to ALPPS,the CAPRA score has a very good ability to predict postoperative mortality.

In the United States, more than 95,000 breast reconstructions were performed in 2013. Of these, tissue expander- and/or implant-based surgical procedures accounted for nearly 79%. Meanwhile, plastic surgery in developing countries, particularly breast esthetic and reconstructive surgery, is drawing more attention. A literature review indicates that up to 2.9% of women receiving esthetic breast augmentation have postsurgical infection, and the rate of surgical site infection with postmastectomy breast reconstruction is usually higher, ranging from I% to 53%, particularly with expander implants and in developing countries.

Hydrophobic nanochannel plays a significant role in many physical, biological, and geological phenomena and ex- hibits impressive applications due to both its ubiquitous distribution and great ability to transport hydrophobic molecules, including various oils and gases. Based on theoretical modeling, we herein reveal that the amphipathic Janus nanoparticles have a large probability to self-assemble into uninterrupted hydrophobic nanochannels inside the aqueous nano-space, al- though there are large portions of the Janus nanoparticles to be hydrophilic. The key to this observation is the attractions between the hydrophobic regimes on neighboring amphipathic Janus particles through hydrophobic interaction in aqueous nano-space. More surprisingly, the permeation efficiency of hydrophobic molecules through the uninterrupted hydrophobic channel in Janus particles aggregate is even higher than that in the aggregate of hydrophobic particles. We note that the proposed amphipathic Janus particles can be transported to the appropriate positions by the water since the hydrophilic regimes still remain a strong particle-water interaction. We also note that most natural subsurface rocks are not completely hydrophobic or hydrophilic but have complex surfaces with inhomogeneous wetting property. Our work therefore provides a detailed molecular level understanding of the formation of underground strata as well as the new insight for constructing the artificial hydrophobic channels for various applications, such as the design of proppants to enhance the recovery of the unconventional oil/gas.

Many human genetic diseases,including Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome(HGPS),are caused by single point *** is a rare disorder that causes premature aging and is usually caused by a de novo point mutation in the LMNA *** editors(BEs)composed of a cytidine deaminase fused to CRISPR/Cas9 nickase are highly efficient at inducing C to T base conversions in a programmable manner and can be used to generate animal disease models with single amino-acid ***,we generated the first HGPS monkey model by delivering a BE mRNA and guide RNA(gRNA)targeting the LMNA gene via microinjection into monkey *** out of six newborn monkeys carried the mutation specifically at the target *** monkeys expressed the toxic form of lamin A,progerin,and recapitulated the typical HGPS phenotypes including growth retardation,bone alterations,and vascular ***,this monkey model genetically and clinically mimics HGPS in humans,demonstrating that the BE system can efficiently and accurately generate patient-specific disease models in non-human primates.

1 IntroductionCulture systems capable of expanding and/or maintaining hematopoietic stem cells will not only facilitate our understanding of stem cell biology, but also broaden clinical applications. Among various in vitro hematopoietic culture systems, co-cultures of marrow or CD34+ cells with an adherent stromal layer that can produce cytokines and extracellular matrix components most effectively supports long-term hematopoiesis ( LTC ), mimicking the bone marrow micro-environment.
