In their research article in Nature in March 2023,Fabio Zani and colleagues reported that high concentrations of the zero-calorie artificial sweetener sucralose affected the proliferation and differentiation of T cells toward interferon-γ-producing subsets,with no effect observed for B cells and myeloid cells.1 The publication has raised high hopes in the lay press on a widely available cure for patients suffering from autoimmune diseases.

Despite continuous efforts to improve the robustness of cardiac valve implants,neither bioprosthetic nor mechanical valves fulfill both hemodynamic and durability *** study discussed novel flexible leaflet designs,focusing on polymeric materials with proven hemocompatibility,such as polyether ether ketone,of much higher stiffness than native tissue,aiming at optimal valve implants.A biomimetic valve with a single-curvature belly-curve(B-C)was used as a reference for new design variants with a double-curvature B-C with varying ***(13.2 MPa)and stiff(2.4 GPa)leaflet materials and different thicknesses were studied using lean simulations and in vitro experiments under physiologic hemodynamic *** performance was assessed using opening pressure(OP)and orifice area(OA).The latter was determined by a newly developed automatized image processing *** trends are in agreement with simulations and demonstrated that a buckling-inspired double-curvature leaflet design significantly enhances the trileaflet valve opening behavior,which is particularly advantageous for stiffer leaflet *** to the reference,the best-performing variant showed an OP improvement of 47%and 44%based on simulations and experiments,*** contrast,the achieved mean pressure differential was directly comparable to state-of-the-art bioprosthetic *** OA was slightly reduced for new variants but still in the satisfying range.

In our study,the composition-dependent effects of atomic displacementsin Au-Cu-Ni-Pd-Pt basedalloys,comprising elements with large differences in atomic radii,are investigated at the atomic *** alloys-the equimolar AuCuNiPdPt and AuCuNiPd-have been characterized using multi-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure(EXAFS)spectroscopy in conjunction with reverse Monte Carlo(RMC)simulations at room *** statistically-averaged component-dependent pair distribution functions(PDFs),which represent the distribution of atoms around the assumed regular face-centered cubic(fcc)lattice positions,reveal a shift of their peaks to shorter distances and a pronounced asymmetry in atomic distribution only for atoms with small radi(Cu/Ni).The analysis demonstrates that small atoms(Cu/Ni)are significantly more displaced from the expected lattice positions as compared to large atoms(Au/Pt).Furthermore,there are indications of preferential next-neighbour bonding that changes depending on the alloy *** most pronounced changes in the PDFs were found solely for *** this study,we provide a basis for a deeper understanding of the composition-dependent atomic arrangement in chemically complex solid solutions.

Use of an apico-aortic conduit （AAC） serves as an alternative method to treat severe aortic stenosis inelder patients, especially in those with a heavily calcified ascending aorta or prior cardiac surgery. The results of long-term follow-up of AAC are very rare. We reported a case about a successful replacement of late degenerated prosthetic valve following AAC procedure, assisted with extra corporeal membrane oxygenation （ECMO）.

Wireless medical sensors typically utilize electromagnetic coupling or ultrasound for energy transfer and sensor *** transfer and management is a complex aspect that often limits the applicability of implantable sensor *** this work,we report a new passive temperature sensing scheme based on an acoustic metamaterial made of silicon embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane *** to other approaches,this concept is implemented without additional electrical components in situ or the need for a customized receiving unit.A standard ultrasonic transducer is used for this demonstration to directly excite and collect the reflected *** metamaterial resonates at a frequency close to a typical medical value(5 MHz)and exhibits a high-quality *** the design features of the metamaterial with the high-temperature sensitivity of the polydimethylsiloxane matrix,we achieve a temperature resolution of 30 *** value is below the current standard resolution required in infrared thermometry for monitoring postoperative complications(0.1 K).We fabricated,simulated,in vitro tested,and compared three acoustic sensor designs in the 29-43℃(~302-316 K)temperature *** this concept,we demonstrate how our passive metamaterial sensor can open the way toward new zero-power smart medical implant concepts based on acoustic interrogation.

In this work,an approach is developed to study the seismicity associated with the impoundment and level changes of a water reservoir(reservoir induced seismicity e RIS).The proposed methodology features a combination of a semi-analytical poroelastic model with an earthquake nucleation approach based on rate-and-state frictional *** combined approach was applied to the case of the Pertusillo Lake,located in the Val d’Agri area(Italy),whose large seasonal water level changes are believed to induce protracted micro-seismicity(local magnitude ML<3).Results show that the lake impoundment in 1962 could have produced up to 0.5 bar(1 bar=100 kPa)changes in Coulomb failure stress(DCFS),while the seasonal water level variation is responsible for variation up to 0.05 *** results of the seismicity rates in 20012014 show that the observed earthquakes are well correlated with the modeled ***,the reason that the seismicity is only observed at southwest of the Pertusillo Lake is provided,which is likely attributed to different rock lithologies and depletion caused by significant hydrocarbon exploitation in the northeastern sector of the lake.

BACKGROUND: The purposes of this study were to confirm the changes in myocardial collagen level after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), find the relation between these changes and prognosis, and test a practical method to assess the level of myocardial collagen. METHODS: Left ventricular samples were collected from DCM patients with different prognosis (transplanted group n = 8, weaning group n = 10) at the time when the LVADs were implanted and again during cardiac transplantation (n = 8). The level of neutral salt soluble collagen (NSC) and acid soluble collagen (ASC) was measured by Sircol collagen assay, and that of total collagen and insoluble collagen (ISC) by quantification of hydroxyproline (Hyp). Serum samples were collected from a portion of these patients (transplanted group, n = 6; weaning group n = 7) at the time the LVADs were implanted, 1 month after implantation and on explantation. Circulating concentration of carboxy-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (P I CP), amino-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (P I NP), amino-terminal propeptide of type III procollagen (P III NP) and type I collagen telopeptide (I CTP) were measured by the equilibrium type radioimmunoassay.
