In Vivo Study on Degradation Behavior and Histologic Response of Pure Magnesium in Muscles

When an orthopedics device is implanted into bone injury site, it will contact the soft tissue （skeletal muscle, fascia, ligament etc.） except for bone. Magnesium based biodegradable metals are becoming an important research object in orthopedics due to their bioactivity to promote bone healing. In this study, pure Mg rods with and without chemical conversion coating were implanted into the muscle tissue of rabbits. Implants and their surrounding tissues were taken out for weight loss measurement, cross- sectional scanning electron microscopy observation, elemental distribution analysis and histological examination. The results showed that the chemical conversion coating would increase the in vivo cor- rosion resistance of pure Mg and decrease the accumulation of calcium （Ca） and phosphorus （P） elements around the implants. For the bare magnesium implant, both Ca and P contents in the surrounding tissues increased at the initial stage of implantation and then decreased at 12 weeks implantation, while for the magnesium with chemical conversion coating, Ca and P contents in the surrounding tissues de- creased with the implantation time, but were not significant. The histological results demonstrated that there was no calcification in the muscle tissue with implantation of magnesium for up to 12 weeks. The chemical conversion coating not only increased the in vivo corrosion resistance of pure Mg, but also avoided the depositions of Ca and P in the surrounding tissues, meaning that pure magnesium should be biosafe when contacting with muscle tissues,

Background Rhodococcus equi （R. equl） infection commonly occurs in grazing areas, especially in patients with AIDS or with T-lymphocyte immuno-deficiencies. Literature reviews revealed that cases radiologically and pathologically diagnosed of AIDS complicated by R. equi infection are rare. This study aimed to investigate the imaging features and Datholoqical basis of AIDS complicated by pulmonary R. equi infection.

Differentiating between Alzheimer’s disease, amnestic mild cognitive impairment, and normal aging via diffusion kurtosis imaging

Diffusion kurtosis imaging can be used to assess pathophysiological changes in tissue structure and to diagnose central nervous system diseases. However, its sensitivity in assessing hippocampal differences between patients with Alzheimer’s disease and those with amnestic mild cognitive impairment has not been characterized. Here, we examined 20 individuals with Alzheimer’s disease (11 men and 9 women, mean 73.2 ± 4.49 years), 20 with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (10 men and 10 women, mean 71.55 ± 4.77 years), and 20 normal controls (11 men and 9 women, mean 70.45 ± 5.04 years). We conducted diffusion kurtosis imaging, using a 3.0 T magnetic resonance scanner, to compare hippocampal differences among the three groups. The results demonstrated that the right hippocampal volume and bilateral mean kurtosis were remarkably smaller in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease compared with those with amnestic mild cognitive impairment and normal controls. Further, the mean kurtosis was lower in the amnestic mild cognitive impairment group compared with the normal control group. The mean diffusion in the left hippocampus was lower in the Alzheimer’s disease group than in the amnestic mild cognitive impairment and normal control groups, while the mean diffusion in the right hippocampus was lower in the Alzheimer’s disease group than in the normal control group. Fractional anisotropy was similar among the three groups. These results verify that bilateral mean kurtosis and mean diffusion are sensitive to the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and amnestic mild cognitive impairment. Complex Cystic Breast Masses: An Ultrasound Imaging Review

Cystic lesions are very commonly encountered entities in the breast. Among these, Complex Cystic Breast Masses (CCBMs), which contain both anechoic and echogenic components, can result in a variety of imaging appearances. These include cystic lesions with thick walls and/or internal septa, intracystic nodular lesions, and solid-cystic masses of varying compositions. Ultrasound is the mainstay for evaluating cystic lesions, and thus recognizing the imaging features appropriately and suggesting suitable interventional procedures are included in their management. In this pictorial essay, we describe the wide range of ultrasound appearances of CCBMs with a number of clinically encountered examples from our institution. This article would enhance the understanding of readers in possible differentials to be included in their clinical practice and to suggest appropriate further intervention, when deemed necessary.

Trans-arterial chemoperfusion for the treatment of liver metastases of breast cancer and colorectal cancer: Clinical results in palliative care patients

AIM To evaluate the clinical value and efficiency of transarterial chemoperfusion(TACP) in patients with liver metastases from breast cancer(BC) and colorectal cancer(CRC).METHODS We treated 36 patients with liver metastases of BC(n = 19, 19 females) and CRC(n = 17; 8 females, 9 males) with repeated TACP. The treatment interval was 4 wk. TACP was performed with gemcitabine(1000 mg/m2) and mitomycin(10 mg/m2), administered within 1 h after positioning the catheter tip in the hepatic artery. Before treatment, the size, location, tumour volume, vascularization and number of liver tumours were evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging(MRI). Tumour response was evaluated according to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors *** TACP using gemcitabine and mitomycin for metastases from CRC and BC was performed without any serious side effects. The follow-up MRI showed a therapeutic response in 84.2% of the BC patients-stable disease 47.4% and partial response 36.8%. A progression was seen in 15.8%.CRC patients showed a therapeutic response in 52.9% of cases. A progression of the disease was documented in 47.1% of the patients with CRC. These data show that TACP in patients with liver metastases of BC leads to a significantly better therapeutic response compared with CRC patients(P = 0.042). The median survival time was 13.2 mo for the BC patients, which is significantly longer than for CRC patients at 9.3 mo(P = 0.001).CONCLUSION TACP for liver metastases of BC appears to be a safe and effective palliative treatment with improved outcomes in comparison to patients with CRC.

MRI versus 64-row MDCT for diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma

A Correlation Study of the Effectiveness of Renal Scintigraphy and Sonography in the Detection and Evaluation of Renal Disorders

Purpose: To evaluate the amalgamation of scintigraphy and sonography techniques in prognosticating renal disease. Methods: All the patients were subjected to renal scintigraphy while 68 patients underwent renal ultrasonography. Ninety-six patients’ imaging data was statistically analyzed including 43 females and 53 males. Renal U/S reported anatomical renal anomaly in 94.1% of patients versus 85.4% detected by scintigraphy. There were 41 patients out of 68 diagnosed with hydronephrosis and 21 of them were suffering from mild hydronephrosis as suggested by U/S imaging. The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS 21 software. Results: Renal scintigraphy of 41 hydronephrotic patients validated that 19 patients had non-obstructive bilateral pelvic dilation while the remaining 22 with mild to severe obstruction. Ultrasonography diagnosed 4 patients with renal obstruction. Conversely, renal scintigraphy validated 2 of them with renal obstruction based on renal function. Conclusions: Renal scintigraphy is not significant in diagnosing kidney disease;rather this is a vibrant imaging tool providing supplementary data based on renal function. An effectively targeted intervention regime can be achieved by correlating renal scintigraphy and renal ultrasonography results to minimize renal disease incidence.

Treatment strategy for pancreatic head cancer with celiac axis stenosis in pancreaticoduodenectomy:A case report and review of literature
