Aim: To evaluate the effects of 1,3-dinitrobenznene (mDNB) on sperm motility of hamster and to correlate the re-sults with the fertility. Methods: Adult male hamsters were gavaged with one of the 3 dose regimes of mDNB(1.5 mg daily for 4 weeks ,1.5 mg one day a week for 4 weeks and 1.0 mg 3 days a week for 4 weeks). Computerassisted semen analysis (CASA) was used to analyse the sperm motility parameters, curvilinear velocity (VCL) andstraight line velocity (VSL) of sperm in distal corpus epididymides and distal cauda epididymides. In vitro fertilisationwas carried out only for 1.5 mg mDNB daily group to determine the sperm fertilising capacity. Results: There wasa significant reduction in sperm velocity parameters at weeks 3 and 4 after treatment, which was correlated with a de-cline in sperm fertility. Conclusion; Sperm velocity parameters may be used to determine the effect of a toxic insulton the sperm function.

Aim: To evaluate the effects of acute and chronic doses of methoxy acetic acid (MAA) on in vitro fertilisation byhamster sperm and to correlate the data with the testicular damage. Methods: Adult male hamsters were gavagedwith 3 single doses (0, 80, 160 and 650 mg/kg) and 3 chronic doses (0, 8, 32 and 64 mg/kg daily for 5 weeks) ofMAA in distilled water. After treatment hamsters were killed at weekly intervals and spermatozoa recovered from thedistal cauda epididymides were used to assess the fertilising capacity in vitro. The testes were processed for histologicalexamination. Results; Acute doses showed a significant reduction in sperm fertilising ability from week 3 and 4 af-ter treatment and with the chronic doses, the effects were more extensive and persistent. The results were in correpon-dence with the testicular damages observed. Conclusion: It is evident that both acute and chronic doses of MAAcan impair the sperm function by damaging one or more cell populations in the testis.(Asian J Androl 2001 Sep; 3: 209- 216)

A collection of brachiopods by the Institute of Oceanology . Academia Sinica (Qingdao ). contains eight species from seven genera. Six of the species have been recorded previously from Chinaseas -- Lingula adamsi . L. anatina, Discinisca Stella. Pelagodiscus allanticus, Campages mariae,Terebratalia coreanica . Two species (Terebratulina hataiana and Frenulina sanguinolenta)have been described from other parts of the Pacific area . The apparent absence of any endemic species is a noteworthy feature of Chinese in comparison with Japanese faunas .

Results are presented of a survey of isozyme frequencies in parthenogenetic Artimia from six salterns in the Shandong Peninsula, P.R.C. Three of the eleven enzymes we scored using polyacryamide gel electrophoresis proved to be useful for analysis of electromorph frequency variation. These enzymes are tetrazolium oxidase (TO), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and malate dehydrogenase (MDH). Each of these systems showed extensive isozyme variation both within and between salterns. In addition, we have examined the possibility that electromorph frequencies may vary as the result of natural selection for adaptation to specific salinity, or salinity-associated environmental conditions. An indication of clinal variation was found in two series of ponds differing in salinity, however more extensive data are needed before it is possible to conclude that these patterns are the result of natural selection. Finally, the use of isozyme analyses such as ours, for unraveling taxonomic problems in Anemia, is discussed.

Evidence so far accumulated suggests that the human early placenta can be considered as a complicated neuroendocrine organt. Our previous reports have demonstrated that the human early placenta presents not only a variety of neuropeptides but also neurotransmitters such as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE). It has been shown that these neurotransmitters in human placenta may play an important role in the process of blastocyst implantation and maintenance of normal pregnancy. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of plant extracts Artemisia herba-alba, Matricharia chamomella, and Melia azedarach against the Culex quinquefasciatus. The following concentrations were used to assess the effectiveness ofA. herba-alba, M. chamomella, and M. azedarach： 0.50, 1.00, 1.50, 2.00, 2.50 and 3.00 mg/L; 0.12, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00 and 1.50 mg/L and 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.50, 1.75 and 2.00 mg/L, respectively. The mortality rates of the mosquito pupae were measured after 24 hours. It was found that the LCso was 0.50, 1.00 and 1.80 mg/L of M. chamomile, M. azedarach, and A. herab-alba respectively which mean that M. chamomella extracts had the best pesticide effects against Cx. Quinquefasciatus pupae where was A. herba-alba the lower of them.

The beautiful island of Tobago is the southernmost Caribbean island. The sister island of Trinidad belongs to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Thirty-two species of tunicates were collected from Tobago from dept.s of 40 m or less and they were listed. Tunicates listed in this work were from collections made in 1956, 1991, 1993, 2002 and 2006 and although specimens were collected from the Atlantic Ocean side of the island and the Caribbean Sea side, all species turned out to be typical Caribbean species.

The effect of four dried callus powders derived from certain plants, i.e. tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum; periwinkle, Catharanthus roseus; thorne apple, Datura stramonium and oleander, Nerium oleander applied separately or concomitantly with oxamyl at a half of the recommended dose each on tomato seedlings grown in soil naturally heavy infested with M. incognita under field conditions, indicated that dried callus powder derived from N. oleander either alone or mixed with oxamyl significantly surpassed the other tested treatments in improving percentages of increase in whole plant fresh and shoot dry weights as well as increasing numbers and weights of fruits. Concerning other treatments including oxamyl at a half of recommended dose with each tested callus powder, similar results were evident regarding tomato plant growth parameters. C. roseus plus oxamyl achieved the highest percentage of increase in whole plant fresh weight （141.4%） and shoot dry weight （189.7%） and ranked second to N. oleander ＋ oxamyl in this respect over the untreated plants, respectively. One the other hand, among all tested materials single application of either L. esculentum or oxamyl gave the least values of such criteria which averaged 34.4% and 61.7% or 39.5% and 11.2%, respectively. All tested treatments significantly reduced the total number of galls, egg-masses and eggs in egg-masses especially, dried callus powder of N. oleander which applied singly or combined with oxamyl. The least values of reduction percentages of galls and eggs in egg-masses among all treatments were recorded from tomato plant received dried callus powders of L. esculentum applied alone or concomitant with oxamyl.

The pollution of aquatic ecosystem by heavy metals has assumed serious proportions due to their toxicity and accumulative behavior. The toxicity metal is dependent on its chemical form and therefore removal of metal is more meaningful than the estimation of its concentrations. In this study, the batch experiments were carried out under 30℃ to study the effect of pH, initial Cr concentration, adsorbent dose and contact time on the removal of Cr （lII）. The maximum adsorption efficiency （99%） was observed when 1.5 g of pond mud was used for removal ofCr （Ⅲ） from test solution containing 150 mg·Cr / 100 ml. The optimal pH and contact time recorded during the study were 6 and 10.0, respectively.
